Chapter 12 - Chapter 12: Mirror Terms

The mirror stood in the center of the intake room, tall and clean, a blade made of glass.

It reflected us with a delay. Not a natural delay. A chosen delay.

The prompt hovered where everyone could see it.

INTAKE DOOR

Tie Bundle Evaluation Required

Option: Dissolve tie voluntarily at mirror

Option: Forced dissolve on refusal

Answer required: Y/N

Mina whispered, "I hear it again."

Darren tightened his arms around her. Cass shifted her stance. Eli's eyes darted from the mirror to the floor and back.

The medical unit waited near the doorway we came through. Its hands were down. Its head tilted toward us.

Click.

It didn't speak. The mirror spoke for it.

I stared at my reflection.

My reflection stared back.

Then it smiled.

My face didn't move.

The smile was not mine.

My stomach tightened. The mirror was a crack. The delay was the crack's mouth.

I spoke fast, low.

"Don't stare at it," I said. "Look at the floor. Look at my hands. Anything else."

Darren pulled Mina's face into his chest. Eli turned his head away. Cass kept her eyes on me.

I had to face it anyway.

"Clarify voluntary dissolve," I said. "List effects."

The panel shifted.

Clarification Granted.

Voluntary dissolve: Ends tie bundle without fracture penalty.

Effect: Removes coordinated status.

Effect: Restores individual movement.

Warning: Occupants may be reassigned under detention protocol.

Reassigned.

That was the point. The system wanted the tie gone so it could sort us. Sorting meant separation.

Mina trembled in Darren's arms.

"It's telling me," she whispered. "It's telling me to look."

Darren's voice went rough. "Don't."

Cass looked at the mirror for half a second, then back to me. "So if we say yes, they can grab her."

"Yes," I said. "And if we say no, they force it and punish us."

Eli swallowed. "So we're trapped."

"We're pressured," I corrected. "Not trapped yet."

The medical unit clicked once.

Click.

A smaller prompt appeared only for me.

Supervisor Advisory

Disorder interference suspected

Recommended action: Dissolve tie for intake processing

Answer required: Y/N

Order wanted a clean cut. It wanted me to agree to the cut.

Mina's voice shook again. "It's saying it can help."

Cass hissed, "Help is never free."

I spoke into the air.

"Clarify reassignment triggers," I said.

The panel answered, clipped.

Reassignment triggers: Detention protocol classification, occupant risk flags, owner status limits off claimed territory.

That was us. Every word was us.

Detention protocol. Mina's risk flag. My owner status uncertain because we were off the roof claim.

Voluntary dissolve meant immediate sorting.

Forced dissolve meant immediate sorting plus penalties.

So if I played the mirror's game, we lost either way.

I took a small step closer to the mirror, careful. I didn't cross any marked line because there were no lines here, just rules.

The mirror surface rippled. Not water. A screen refreshing.

Bzzzt.

The reflection delay increased. My reflection lagged behind my breath.

Then my reflection raised a hand.

I did not.

Tap. Tap.

Text appeared inside the mirror itself, not in the air.

DISORDER OFFER

Claim crack detected

Tie strain high

Offer: Anchor Thread

Cost: Touch the mirror

Reward: Keep group together

Mina gasped.

"It's right there," she whispered. "It wants my hand."

Darren tightened his hold. "No."

Cass's eyes widened. "That isn't the system."

"No," I said. "That's the other side of the crack."

The medical unit reacted for the first time.

Click.

It stepped forward.

Kzzzt.

The intercom snapped with a harsh tone.

"Unauthorized interface detected. Maintain distance."

The unit raised its hand toward the mirror.

The mirror flashed red.

Bzzzt.

The offer text warped, then snapped back.

DISORDER OFFER

Touch required

Anchor Thread pending

Hurry

My reflection smiled again.

This time it moved its lips, silent.

It mouthed one word.

"Owner."

Mina started to twist in Darren's arms.

"It's so loud," she sobbed. "It's saying it can give my brother back."

Darren's face turned pale. Cass swore under her breath. Eli whispered, "It's lying."

Mina cried, "I can't even see him anymore."

The memory tax had left a hole in her. The offer aimed straight for it.

I put my hand on Mina's shoulder, firm.

"Mina," I said, "look at me, not it."

Her eyes flickered, fighting.

The medical unit's palm touched the mirror.

Thud.

A rule slammed shut.

Bang.

The mirror flickered white. The public prompt flickered too.

Tie Bundle Evaluation Required

Answer required: Y/N

The unit pressed again.

Thud.

Another bang.

Bang.

The mirror flared, then steadied. The Disorder text stayed, stubborn.

The unit couldn't erase the crack. Not cleanly.

I made my decision.

If the mirror went offline, the tie would be forced apart and we'd be sorted. Mina would be taken first.

If I touched the mirror, I risked letting something hook into me. But I might gain a tool that kept us together long enough to survive the next stage.

I would pay that cost myself.

I moved.

Cass grabbed my arm. "Nate, don't."

Darren's eyes were wide. "What are you doing."

"Hold the knot," I said. "Do not touch the mirror. Do not answer anything."

Cass's grip tightened. "Nate."

I pulled free carefully. No jerking. No sudden moves.

I raised my left hand, the one holding the Frost Shard.

Cold weight. Real weight.

Then I pressed the Frost Shard against the mirror.

Thud.

Not skin. Not direct touch.

The mirror flared.

Bzzzt.

DISORDER OFFER

Contact recognized

Medium: Object

Owner insulation: Partial

Anchor Thread forming

The word "partial" hit like a warning bell.

The mirror surface split with a hairline crack made of light. The crack crawled from the glass to the shard, then toward my wrist.

Bzzzt.

Cold burned up my arm.

The medical unit clicked rapidly.

Click click click.

The intercom blared.

Kzzzt.

"Unauthorized interaction. Detention escalation."

The system prompt changed.

FORCED DISSOLVE INITIATED

Reason: Noncompliance at intake interface

Countdown: 00:00:10

Cass shouted, "Nate!"

Darren swore. "What did you do."

"I bought a lever," I said, voice tight.

The crack tightened around my wrist. It tried to wrap. It tried to settle into place.

My vision flooded with new text.

ANCHOR THREAD

Status: Forming

Function: Prevent reassignment by binding group proximity

Cost: Host risk

Warning: Supervisor will label anomaly

Host risk.

That was the hook.

The countdown ticked.

00:00:06

Mina screamed, not at me, at the mirror.

"No," she cried. "Don't split us."

Darren held her tighter. Cass stepped closer, eyes locked on the numbers. Eli's hands clenched.

The medical unit raised both hands, aiming at the tie.

Click.

The crack of light pulled at my wrist again, harder now, hungry to finish.

The forced dissolve countdown hit.

00:00:03

A new prompt appeared, half system, half crack.

ANCHOR THREAD COMPLETION

Select bind target: Group or Owner only

Warning: Group bind will override forced dissolve once
