The fog clung to the ground like a living thing.
It seeped through the cracks in the abandoned building, crawling up the walls, filling every corner with its icy breath. The air tasted like metal and old rain. The lights in the hallway flickered, then died, leaving only darkness.
Kai stood in the center of the room, his back pressed against the cold concrete wall. He had no idea how long he'd been trapped inside this stage, only that the silence felt heavy—like the world itself was holding its breath.
"Where are the others?" he whispered.
No answer.
The shadows moved.
Not like people, not like creatures. More like a living darkness, twisting and shifting on its own.
Kai's heart beat faster. His hands trembled, but he forced himself to stay still. He had learned the hard way that panic only made things worse.
A voice came from the darkness—low, calm, and strangely familiar.
"Kai."
He froze.
The voice wasn't from the game speakers. It was inside his head.
"Kai," the voice repeated, "you've done well to survive this far."
Kai's throat tightened. He didn't answer.
"Why are you silent?" the voice asked. "Do you fear me?"
Kai swallowed hard. His mind flashed to the last stage, to the moment when he almost died. He remembered the feeling of something reaching for him from the shadows—something that wanted him.
"I don't fear you," Kai said finally. "I fear what you can do."
The darkness seemed to smile.
"Good," the voice said. "Fear is useful. It keeps you alive."
Kai's eyes darted around the room, searching for the source of the voice.
A figure stepped forward.
Not a person.
A silhouette made entirely of darkness.
It moved like a shadow but stood like a person. It had no face, only a deep blackness where its features should have been. Yet Kai felt its gaze pierce through him.
"You're the one behind the game," Kai said, voice shaking. "You're the reason we're here."
The shadow paused.
Then it nodded.
"Yes," it said. "I am the one who watches."
Kai's skin prickled. "Then why are you letting me live?"
The shadow's presence grew stronger. The air became colder.
"Because you are interesting," it replied. "And because you have something I need."
Kai frowned. "What do you need?"
The shadow extended a hand.
The darkness around its fingers twisted and formed a shape—like a small orb made of pure shadow.
Kai's body instinctively recoiled, but the orb floated toward him, drifting slowly like a falling leaf.
The voice spoke again, softer this time.
"Take it."
Kai stared at the orb. He could feel it calling to him, like it wanted to enter his body.
He didn't want it. He didn't trust it.
But he also couldn't deny the strange warmth that spread through his chest as the orb approached.
"What is it?" Kai asked.
"A gift," the shadow said. "A power."
Kai swallowed. "Power from the game?"
The shadow's voice grew quiet, almost gentle.
"No," it said. "Power from you."
Kai's eyes widened.
The orb stopped in front of him, hovering.
Kai felt a sudden surge of energy inside him—like a flame trying to ignite.
His vision blurred.
The room spun.
And in that moment, Kai saw something he never expected to see.
Not the game.
Not the shadow.
His own future.
He saw himself standing on a battlefield of darkness, surrounded by monsters. He saw his friends, bleeding, fighting desperately. He saw Mei—his sister—standing in the middle of the chaos, crying.
And he saw himself holding the same orb.
The same shadow.
He saw himself accepting it, and then…
He saw himself becoming something else.
Something powerful.
Something terrifying.
Kai's heart pounded.
He snapped back to reality, gasping for air.
The shadow's voice echoed in his mind.
"Do you understand now?"
Kai stared at the orb.
He could feel it calling to him, begging him to take it.
He could feel the power inside it.
He could feel the danger.
He could feel the future.
And he realized something terrifying:
If he refused, he might die.
If he accepted…
He might lose himself.
Kai lifted his hand.
The orb drifted closer.
His fingers trembled.
He hesitated for a moment—just a moment—before finally touching it.
The moment his skin touched the orb, everything changed.
A dark energy rushed into him, flowing through his veins like cold fire. His body shuddered. The shadows in the room seemed to lean toward him, hungry.
Kai's vision went black.
And when it returned, he felt… different.
He could feel the darkness inside him.
He could feel the power.
He could feel the shadow whispering.
"Welcome," it said. "Now you understand."
Kai opened his eyes.
The shadow was gone.
But the room was still filled with darkness.
Kai looked at his hands.
His fingers were covered in a thin black mist.
He stared at them in shock.
"What did you do to me?" he whispered.
A sudden sound broke the silence.
A door creaked open.
Kai turned toward it.
Two figures stepped into the room.
Mei.
And…
Vex.
Kai's heart stopped.
Mei was alive.
But her eyes were different.
Cold.
Empty.
She stared at Kai with a blank expression, like she didn't recognize him.
"Brother," she said softly.
Kai's voice cracked.
"Mei…?"
She took a step closer.
Vex followed behind her, watching Kai with a serious expression.
Kai felt something in his chest tighten.
He didn't know what was happening.
But he knew one thing for sure:
The game was changing.
And Kai was no longer just a player.
He was becoming something else.
Something dark.
Something powerful.
Something that might be the key to winning…
Or the reason they all lose.
The shadows in the room grew darker.
And the game's voice whispered in Kai's head:
"Welcome to the next stage."
