Kai woke to silence.
Not the calm kind—
the kind that listens.
They lay scattered across a vast floor made of black stone, carved with symbols that shifted when no one looked at them directly. Above them, there was no ceiling. Only darkness… and distant whispers, overlapping, arguing, laughing softly.
Freya pushed herself up first. "Is everyone… alive?"
Mei nodded, though her eyes never left Kai.
Luca hesitated before answering. "Yeah. But this place—this isn't part of the rooms anymore."
Kai stood slowly.
The moment his feet touched the floor, the whispers stopped.
All at once.
"That's not normal," Luca muttered.
Kai swallowed. He could feel the space around him now—like invisible threads stretching outward, reacting to his breathing, his heartbeat.
"I think…" Kai said carefully, "this area responds to intent."
As if answering him, a door emerged from the darkness ahead.
Tall. Black. Seamless.
No handle.
No lock.
Just one word carved deep into it:
KAI
Mei's breath caught. "It has your name."
The others stepped back instinctively.
Freya shook her head. "That thing wasn't meant for all of us."
Kai's shadow stretched unnaturally toward the door.
Inside his chest, something stirred—quiet, patient, eager.
Open it, a voice whispered.
You were chosen.
Kai clenched his fists. "I won't open it unless we agree."
Luca looked between Kai and the door. "What if it doesn't open for anyone else?"
The floor trembled.
Chains burst from the ground behind them, slithering like living things, blocking their path back.
The whispers returned—louder now.
"Time-limited choice," a familiar metallic voice echoed.
"Failure condition approaching."
Mei grabbed Kai's sleeve. "If you go in there alone—"
"I won't be alone," Kai said firmly.
He placed his hand on the door.
It was warm.
The moment his palm touched it, symbols ignited across the surface. The door creaked open just enough to reveal what lay beyond.
Not a room.
A memory.
Kai saw himself—smaller, younger—standing in the rain, screaming for help while people walked past, pretending not to hear.
His chest tightened.
The door tried to pull him in.
"Kai!" Mei shouted, holding onto him with both hands.
The shadow behind Kai surged forward, wrapping around his arm like smoke.
"Let go," the shadow whispered. "Pain makes you stronger."
Kai roared and slammed the door shut.
The chains shattered instantly.
The door dissolved.
Silence returned.
Kai dropped to his knees, breathing hard.
Mei hugged him without thinking.
Freya exhaled shakily. "That door… it wasn't testing strength."
Luca nodded grimly. "It was testing control."
From the darkness ahead, new paths began to form—twisting corridors lined with faint red lights.
The announcer's voice returned, colder than before.
"Stage Two has begun."
"Group dependency detected."
"Correction required."
A pause.
Then:
"One of you will be removed if imbalance continues."
Mei tightened her grip on Kai.
And for the first time, Kai wondered—
Was he becoming their only way forward…
Or their biggest risk?
