Chapter 14 - Chapter 14: The Ones Who Didn’t Wake Up

Kai woke up choking on air.

His body jerked upright as if dragged back from drowning. Cold stone pressed against his palms, rough and real. For a moment, he didn't know where he was—or who he was.

Then the memories rushed back.

The illusion.

The voice.

The key.

His hand tightened instinctively.

It was still there.

The others were scattered across the chamber, some slowly stirring, others completely still. Dim blue lights hovered above them, pulsing like weakened heartbeats.

"Kai…?" someone whispered.

Freya pushed herself up, her face pale and damp with sweat. Her eyes darted around wildly before settling on him. "Was that… real?"

Kai didn't answer immediately. He stood, legs unsteady, and scanned the room.

Mateo was awake, breathing hard, staring at the floor like it might swallow him whole. Luca sat against the wall, arms wrapped around himself, refusing to look at anyone.

But two figures didn't move.

Kai's chest tightened.

Mei.

And another player—one of the quieter ones whose name Kai barely remembered.

"Hey," Kai said, moving toward them. "Wake up."

No response.

He knelt beside Mei, shaking her gently. Her skin was cold. Too cold.

"No," he muttered. "No, no—"

A sharp sound echoed through the chamber.

Ding.

The same mechanical voice returned, emotionless and calm.

"Trial Four has concluded."

Kai froze.

"Out of seven participants," the voice continued, "five have successfully overcome the illusion."

The lights above Mei flickered once.

Then went dark.

Kai's breath caught in his throat.

"Failure to awaken indicates total psychological collapse," the voice said. "These players are no longer eligible to continue."

The second body vanished first—dissolving into black dust that sank into the floor.

Mei was next.

"Kai—!" Freya reached for him, but he didn't move.

He watched as Mei's form blurred, her edges fading like smoke in the wind.

This wasn't blood.

This wasn't violence.

It was worse.

Erasure.

When the dust settled, the space beside him was empty.

Kai slowly stood.

His hands were shaking, but his face was blank.

"You said overcome fear," he said quietly. "You didn't say survive it."

The voice paused.

For half a second—too long to be coincidence.

Then it spoke again.

"The next stage will begin shortly."

The floor began to shift. Stone slabs slid apart, revealing a descending staircase spiraling into darkness.

"This path will not allow cooperation," the voice added. "From this point onward—trust will be punished."

Luca finally looked up. "What does that mean?"

Kai stared into the stairwell.

He felt it.

Whatever waited below wasn't testing fear anymore.

It was testing choice.

He stepped forward first.

Behind him, the others hesitated—then followed.

Above them, unseen and watching, something seemed to smile.
