Chapter 8 - Chapter 8: The Shadow That Walks

The door slammed shut behind them.

The sound echoed like a coffin sealing.

Kai didn't move.

The key in his hand felt heavier than before—cold, pulsing, almost alive. It vibrated faintly, as if reacting to the thing standing in front of them.

The shadow.

It stood where the mirrors had been, tall and wrong, its body made of shifting darkness. Its edges flickered like smoke caught in a wind that didn't exist. Two hollow eyes stared at Kai.

They weren't glowing.

They were empty.

Mei grabbed Kai's sleeve. Her fingers were shaking.

"Kai…" she whispered. "It's real. It's not… in my head anymore."

The shadow tilted its head.

When it spoke, it didn't open a mouth.

The voice simply appeared.

"REALITY IS ONLY A SUGGESTION."

Freya backed away until her shoulder hit the wall.

"No," she said, voice cracking. "No, no, no. We passed the test. We got the key."

The shadow laughed.

The sound was wrong—like multiple voices layered together, some deep, some childish, some whispering.

"YOU PASSED NOTHING."

Luca clenched his fists. His reflection wasn't there anymore. No mirrors. No escape.

"Then what do you want?" he shouted. "What is this game even about?!"

The lights flickered.

The room changed.

The smooth walls twisted, stretching outward like they were breathing. Symbols burned into the floor, glowing a dull red. The air smelled old—like dust and forgotten places.

The shadow raised one long arm and pointed at the key.

"THAT KEY DOES NOT OPEN DOORS."

Kai's grip tightened.

"Then what does it do?"

The shadow's eyes locked onto him.

"IT OPENS YOU."

Suddenly, the floor cracked.

A circle formed beneath their feet, the symbols glowing brighter. A low hum filled the room, vibrating through their bones.

Mei cried out as the ground beneath her shifted.

"Kai—!"

He grabbed her wrist just as the floor dropped.

They fell.

Not down.

Through.

The world twisted, light bending into darkness, darkness folding into memory.

Then—

They landed.

Hard.

Kai groaned, pushing himself up. His head rang. The key skidded across the stone floor and stopped near a rusted gate.

He looked around.

They were no longer together.

The room was massive, like an underground arena. Torches lined the walls, casting flickering shadows that moved when they shouldn't.

Chains hung from the ceiling.

And in the center of the room…

Cages.

Inside each cage was a person.

Kai's breath caught.

One of them looked up.

"Mei!"

She was in the cage directly across from him, gripping the bars, eyes wide with fear.

"Kai! I'm here— I think—"

A loud clang echoed.

Another cage rattled.

"Luca!" Freya's voice cried from somewhere to the left.

Kai spun.

Each of them was trapped.

Separated.

The shadow's voice echoed from above, filling the arena.

"THIS ROUND IS SIMPLE."

The torches flared brighter.

"ONLY ONE CAGE HOLDS THE EXIT."

Kai's stomach dropped.

"What?" he shouted. "That's insane!"

"CHOICES DEFINE SURVIVORS."

The rusted gate near Kai creaked open slightly. Beyond it was darkness… and a faint outline of stairs going up.

The exit.

But between him and the gate stood something else.

A creature rose from the shadows.

It was humanoid, but its body bent at unnatural angles. Its limbs were too long, its movements jerky, like a puppet pulled by invisible strings.

Its face was smooth.

No eyes.

No mouth.

Only a carved symbol glowing faintly where its heart should be.

Mei screamed.

"Kai, there's something in here with me!"

From inside her cage, shadows began crawling along the walls, whispering her name.

Freya's cage rattled violently.

Luca shouted, panic breaking through his voice.

"Kai! Do something!"

Kai's heart pounded.

This wasn't just survival anymore.

This was a test of choice.

The key in his hand grew warm.

A whisper brushed against his ear—not the shadow's voice this time.

Softer.

Almost… encouraging.

"USE IT."

Kai looked down at the key.

The symbol on it matched the one glowing on the creature's chest.

His breath caught.

The key wasn't for doors.

It was for beasts.

The creature lunged.

Kai dodged, rolling across the stone floor. The thing slammed into the wall with a screech like metal scraping metal.

He scrambled up, heart racing.

"Hey!" he shouted. "Over here!"

The creature turned toward him.

Good.

Keep it away from them.

Kai ran.

The arena blurred as he sprinted, chains clanking above, shadows reaching out like hands. The creature followed, faster than it looked, its footsteps pounding behind him.

He skidded to a stop near the gate.

The stairs waited.

Freedom.

Behind him, his friends screamed.

Kai clenched the key.

His hand shook.

If he ran now…

He could survive.

The shadow's voice returned, calm and satisfied.

"CHOOSE."

Kai closed his eyes.

Then he turned around.

"No," he said, voice firm despite the fear. "I won't."

He charged the creature.

As it lunged, Kai slammed the key into the glowing symbol on its chest.

The light exploded.

The creature froze, letting out a distorted howl before collapsing into smoke.

The cages rattled violently.

One by one, the locks snapped open.

Mei fell forward as her cage dissolved.

Freya collapsed, gasping.

Luca stumbled out, staring at Kai like he couldn't believe what he was seeing.

The shadow screamed.

Not in anger.

In interest.

"FASCINATING."

The arena began to crumble.

The gate swung fully open.

The stairs beckoned.

But before they could move—

The shadow appeared at the top of the stairs, blocking the way.

Its form was clearer now.

More solid.

More real.

"YOU HAVE PASSED THIS ROUND," it said softly.

"BUT YOU HAVE DRAWN MY ATTENTION."

Kai stepped forward, placing himself between the shadow and his friends.

"Then look at me," he said. "Not them."

The shadow smiled.

"I ALREADY AM."

The lights went out.

And the sound of chains tightening echoed through the darkness.
