Chapter 17 - Chapter 16

Cristi watched over Maya all night. It was already morning, and he was eagerly waiting for Bogdan so he could go take a shower and finally sleep peacefully. He picked up his phone to call his brother when Maya asked where she was.

-Shhh. Stay calm, you're in the hospital. I'm calling the doctor now to check on you.

Twenty minutes later, Cristi was helping Maya eat. The doctor told him she was showing signs of recovery and would probably be tired for a few days, but after that she would be just like before. He was even planning to discharge her later that day. A good prognosis, after the scare everyone had gone through.

His mother had called him at least five times during the night to see whether the girl's condition had changed or whether Cristi needed anything. She also told him she was proud of him, based on what she had heard from Bogdan.

He had practically been turned into a hero—she was even calling him her protector. At least that was how he understood what his mother had told him on the phone:

-If the girl comes around, call me. You can bring her to our place when she's discharged. She can stay with you in your room, or we'll prepare another one for her, and you can stay home for a few days so someone is always with her.

-Cristi, when can I leave the hospital?

-The doctor said today. But he still needs to examine you first, to make sure there's no danger.

-Did you talk to Delia?

-She called last night to see where you were, and I answered. I explained the situation, and she promised to take notes for the classes we'll miss.

-When will I be able to go back to university?

-When you're no longer dizzy. Until then, you'll stay with us.

-With you?

It was too soon to come face to face with Bogdan, and if she stayed at their house, that would be inevitable. As if reading her thoughts, Cristi reassured her, telling her that Bogdan was away from home for a few days, so they wouldn't run into each other anytime soon.

-Are you sure I wouldn't be a burden?

-Believe me, now that my mom knows about you, you can't escape anymore. There's a bit of soup left—come on, eat.
