Chapter 90 - The Last Confession

The gunshot didn't echo anymore.

But its aftermath did.

Silence spread through the corridor like something alive.

Heavy.

Unforgiving.

For a moment...No one moved.

Not

Noah, still on the ground, barely holding himself together.

Not

Evan, struggling to breathe through the pain in his arm.

Not even

Kolon, whose gun remained raised...but no longer steady.

Because in the center of it all...

Something had ended.

Kai staggered.

His body swayed once.

Then again.

Like even now...He was trying to stay standing. But he couldn't. His knees gave in.

And just before he hit the ground...

Someone caught him.

"…Kai…"

Rhea

Her hands trembled as she held him, lowering him carefully like he was something fragile, like he could still break.

"No… no, no"

Her voice cracked.

Shattered.

Kai's breathing was uneven now.

Shallow.

Each breath a little weaker than the last.

But his eyes, they were still open.

Still looking at her.

"…You here," he whispered.

Rhea shook her head, tears falling freely onto his face.

"I was always here," she cried. "You just...why didn't you see it?!"

Kai's gaze softened.

For the first time...

Completely.

"I did," he said quietly.

A pause.

"I just… didn't understand it."

Her grip tightened.

"You didn't have to do this," she whispered. "You didn't have to become this."

Kai let out a weak breath.

Something like a laugh.

Something like regret.

"…It was easier," he said.

Rhea froze.

"Being Hunter…" he continued faintly. "It was simple. No confusion. No… expectations."

His voice faltered.

"No one to lose."

That...

Broke her again.

"You had me!" she cried. "You had people...Noah...Evan...everyone!"

Kai's eyes flickered.

Slowly.

Toward them.

Toward Noah.

Toward Evan.

Something unreadable passed through his gaze.

"…I know," he whispered.

A tear slipped from the corner of his eye.

"But I thought…"

His voice broke.

"…they'd leave."

Rhea shook her head desperately.

"No...no, we wouldn't..."

"You didn't," Kai said softly.

Silence.

Painfully quiet.

"But I will...first."

The truth landed.

Heavy.

Final.

Rhea lowered her head, her tears falling faster now.

"You don't get to say that," she whispered. "You don't get to just… give up now."

Kai smiled faintly.

"I'm not giving up."

A pause.

"I'm just… Done."

Behind them...

Noah forced himself up. Every movement slow. Painful. But he stood. Not as a fighter.

As someone who needed to hear this.

"Kai…" he said, his voice quieter now. "You could've stopped."

Kai looked at him.

"…So could you," he replied.

Noah didn't answer.

Because maybe, he was right.

Evan stepped closer too, holding his injured arm.

His expression unreadable.

"Why me?" Evan asked.

Kai's gaze shifted.

"To see if you'd choose yourself," he said.

Evan let out a weak, bitter breath.

"I didn't."

Kai smiled slightly.

"I know."

Silence again.

And then, his breathing changed.

Shallower.

Slower.

Rhea noticed immediately.

"No no, stay with me," she said, her voice shaking. "Kai, look at me...don't close your eyes"

He looked at her.

One last time.

Clear.

Present.

"All I wanted…" he whispered.

She leaned closer.

"…was to be chosen."

Her grip tightened.

"You were!" she cried. "You were, I chose you, I never stopped..."

Kai's smile softened.

"…Too late."

His eyes began to close.

"I spent my whole life… hunting affection…" he murmured.

A pause.

Barely there.

"…when what I wanted…"

His voice faded.

"…was right beside me."

Silence.

His chest rose once more.

Then...

Stopped.

Completely.

"…Kai?"

No response.

"Kai…?"

Her voice broke again.

But this time...

There was nothing left to answer.

Rhea froze.

Still holding him.

Still hoping...

Even when there was nothing left to hold onto.

Behind her...

Noah closed his eyes.

Evan looked away.

Kolon lowered his gun.

Everyone...Quiet.

Watching the end of something none of them truly understood until it was gone.

Because in the end....

Hunter didn't die as a monster.

He died as someone who finally understood...

What he had lost.

And what he had destroyed.

And the silence that followed...

Was louder than anything before it.
