Chapter 24 - Old Regrets

Much to Storm's suprise, Aurora was much less eager than he to begin learning magic.

He later realized it would take some time for her to overcome her fear of magic that formed due to her past trauma.

He finally convinced her by explaining to her that she wouldn't have to fear magic anymore once they've completed the lessons on how to block magic.

This benefit was enough to secure her begrudging cooperation.

With this task complete, Storm decided to address the next item on his agenda for the day.

He wandered through the tunnels, trying to find Razor.

Grombrim and his workers had arrived yesterday and had begun construction work around the Hatching grounds.

The constant banging of hammers was especially irritating to Storm's sensitive draconic ears, but he forced himself to endure it.

"It's for a good cause!!

You asked them to do this, don't be ungrateful!!" Storm thought to himself.

After wandering through the entire cave system and still not finding her, he stopped by Augustus.

"Have you seen Razor? I'm looking for her?"

"WHAT!!!!!" yelled Augustus.

"I SAID!!!!! HAVE YOU SEEN RAZOR!!!? I'M LOOKING FOR HER!!!" Storm yelled back.

"SHE RETURNED TO HER EYRIE THIS MORNING!!"

"THANK YOU!! I'LL BE GONE FOR THE REST OF THE DAY TO GO SEE HER!!" yelled Storm.

Storm left the cave systems and went to the main entrance.

He was just about to take off, when Aurora's frantic shouts drew his attention.

"Storm! Are you going somewhere?!"

"I'm just going to go see Razor for the day. I need her help with something. "

"Can I please come with you!?

All this construction work is driving me crazy!

I promise I won't get in your way!" Pleaded Aurora.

"Of course. " replied Storm.

By early afternoon, they reached the location where the Griffins had decided to construct their Aerie.

It was a large plateau mountain that was nearly impossible to reach without wings.

The only way up from the ground was a narrow pathway that snaked around the mountains.

Griffins regularly patrolled the skies and kept an eye out for intruders, from the air it would be easy for a griffin to see someone sneaking up on the village.

Such intruders would then be grabbed, before being dropped from the air by the patrolling griffin.

The Griffins had constructed a small settlement made out of wood at the summit.

Much like regular birds, Griffins put a lot of care into their dwellings and expanding or building a different home was usually the first thing a newly bonded pair of Griffins did.

It was considered a trial to see if the newly bonded pair would be able to cooperate and work together on a task.

As Aurora and Storm landed, the Griffins eyed the newcomers with suspicion.

Storm asked for directions to Razor's home and they pointed to a large stone structure that looked suspiciously out of place in the humble griffin Aerie.

He walked to the large double doors and pushed them open.

Inside was a vast hall that could easily hold all the Griffins of the settlement in moments of crisis.

Several doorways along the entryway, split off from the hall and led to other rooms inside the structure.

Most of these doorways and rooms were much too small for their current occupants as so were left empty and abandoned.

A large flight of stairs led to a second floor where another set of double doors blocked their way.

Storm stopped one of the Griffins wandering the halls and asked them for directions to Razor's study.

After the Griffin pointed it out to him, Storm walked up the stairs with Aurora close behind.

Storm knocked on the doors and a moment later Razor called out from the other side.

After opening the doors, they admired the room on the other side.

Much like his father's old study, the place had two bookracks on either side that were filled to bursting with a variety of tomes.

But where his father collected reports, maps and other pieces of information concerning the surrounding region as well as the wider world.

Razor had instead decided to collect tomes and books of knowledge. Everything from ancient spell books, to massive tomes filled with accounts of certain notable events or detailed essays and lectures about certain races.

At the far side of the room was a nest big enough for a single adult griffin. A large circular window overlooked the sky above.

A single unknown machine of some kind was located in the center of the room.

It resembled the looking glasses Storm had seen human commanders or ship captains used to identify distant objects, but it was built to a giant scale and was facing upwards towards the sky.

The roof had been cut away to make room for the looking glass and was covered by a glass dome that was identical to the ones used by dragons.

Razor was sitting behind a large desk. In her front paws she held a book that was clearly too small for her.

She kept the book close to her face so that she could read the small letters written on it's pages.

She seemed to be somewhat frustrated based on her facial expressions.

After a moment she growled in annoyance, before dropping the book on her desk.

"What a load of rubbish!!" Exclaimed Razor.

"You don't like the book I assume?" Replied Storm.

"Humans like to write vast books about a range of topics.

Problem is, they're often too lazy to check their 'facts' so these so called 'experts' often make things up in order to fill these gaps, then try to sell them as truths." Rants Razor.

She shakes her head in disgust.

"Finding a reliable source of information is so hard in this day and age!"

"What are you even reading?" Asked Storm.

She held up the book again so that Storm can read the cover.

"Godarian's guide to the creatures of magic." Read Storm.

"You wouldn't believe the rubbish they print about my species!!

He states that griffins like to collect shiny things to decorate our nests with in order to attract mates!!"

Storm and Aurora both burst out laughing.

"I wouldn't laugh if I were you two!! You don't want to know the rubbish he wrote about 'your' species!" Razor responded.

Storm grew serious.

"If you feel that way, why don't you just write your own book on the topic then?" Asked Storm .

Razor considered it for a moment.

"You know? That's actually not an bad idea. I have been considering how I'm going to preserve and pass on the knowledge I've acquired before I die."

"Don't you have children or Grandchildren who you can pass it on to?" Asked Aurora.

Razor shook her head.

"No, my studies and adventures always took priority and so I never started my own family. "

Razor got a sad look suddenly.

"You know, there are times that I regret not starting my own family. Don't make the same mistake I did.

Don't let this 'crusade' take up all of your youth. Take some time to enjoy and live your life in between.

Storm and Aurora exchanged glances with each other.

"We won't. " they both said simultaneously.

"Enough of past regrets though!

You didn't come here to listen to an old griffin complain about her life choices!!

Why did you seek me out?" Asked Razor.
