The Demon King's army covered the plain from one end of the horizon to the other.
Nathan stood on the palace walls with Moonlight in his hands and watched it come. Thousands of demons. Hulking beasts. Twisted things that had once been human and weren't anymore. And at the front, a rider in black armor with a horned helm that hid his face.
The Demon King himself.
"They're not slowing down," the prince said beside him. His voice was calm, but his hands were clenched at his sides. "They're coming straight for the capital."
"They're not here for a siege," Nathan said. "They want to swamp us."
"Can we stop them?"
Nathan studied the army. It was huge, but it was loose. No formation. No ranks. The demons were spread across the plain in a wide, uneven mass, with gaps opening and closing between them.
"That spread is on purpose," Nathan said. "It's bait. He wants every soldier we have on these walls, shooting at whatever's closest, until we're too tired to do anything else."
