Chapter 133 - chapter 36

BOOK FOUR: THE KINGDOM BEYOND THE LAST GATE

Chapter 36: The Future She Stole

The village had gone completely silent.

The old Keeper stood beside the Gate.

His words remained hanging in the air.

You didn't create Elara's future.

You stole it.

Riva stared at him.

"No."

The Keeper didn't move.

"You don't remember."

"I remember everything."

"Not everything."

Riva's hands trembled.

"Then tell me."

The Keeper looked at Elara.

"She deserves to know."

Elara stepped forward.

"Tell me."

Riva grabbed her arm.

"Elara, wait."

Elara looked at her mother.

"Why?"

Riva had no answer.

That frightened her more than anything.

---

The Keeper raised his staff.

The ground beneath them began glowing.

A circle appeared.

Then another.

Then another.

The entire village disappeared.

Riva found herself standing in a room she had never seen.

White walls.

No doors.

No windows.

Only a single chair.

And a woman sitting in it.

Riva.

But older.

Tired.

Broken.

Elara stood beside her.

"Is this the past?"

The Keeper nodded.

"Seven days before your birth."

Riva stared at the older version of herself.

"I don't remember this."

"You were never supposed to."

---

The memory began.

The older Riva was holding her stomach.

Elara was still unborn.

Caelan stood beside her.

"You don't have to do this."

Riva looked at him.

"I do."

"Why?"

"Because I saw it."

"Saw what?"

"The future."

Caelan's face changed.

"What happens?"

Riva looked terrified.

"Elara becomes the final Crown."

Silence.

Caelan shook his head.

"That's impossible."

"I saw it."

"What does she do?"

Riva closed her eyes.

"She destroys every world."

---

Elara stared.

"No."

Riva looked at her.

"I saw you standing above the remains of everything."

Elara's face went pale.

"I wouldn't do that."

"I know."

"Then why did you believe it?"

"Because it wasn't a vision."

The Keeper spoke quietly.

"It was a possibility."

---

Riva remembered.

The future had shown her thousands of outcomes.

In one...

Elara became a hero.

In another...

A queen.

In another...

A destroyer.

In another...

She disappeared.

But there was one future that frightened Riva more than all the others.

Elara stood alone.

Every world was gone.

And she was crying.

Not because she had destroyed them.

Because she had been forced to.

---

Riva had asked the future:

"Why?"

A voice answered:

"Because she will be given no choice."

Riva had understood.

Someone would control Elara.

Someone would turn her into the final weapon.

So Riva made a decision.

She removed Elara's future.

Not her memories.

Not her power.

Her destiny.

She hid it somewhere no one could reach.

Including Elara.

---

The memory ended.

Elara looked at Riva.

"You did that to protect me."

Riva nodded.

"Yes."

"Then why didn't you tell me?"

"Because I was afraid."

"Of me?"

"Of what others would do to you."

Elara's eyes filled with tears.

"You didn't trust me."

Riva shook her head.

"I didn't trust the future."

---

The Keeper stepped forward.

"And that is where you made your final mistake."

Riva looked at him.

"What?"

"You removed her future."

"Then you tried to create one for her."

Riva frowned.

"I didn't."

"You did."

"Every world you created around her..."

"Every person you placed near her..."

"Every battle..."

"Every escape..."

"You were still guiding her."

Riva stared at him.

"I thought I had stopped."

"You stopped controlling her choices."

The Keeper pointed toward Elara.

"But you were still afraid of the consequences."

---

Elara looked at her mother.

"So even after everything..."

"You were still protecting me from something that hadn't happened."

Riva lowered her eyes.

"Yes."

Elara wiped away a tear.

"Mother..."

"I'm sorry."

Elara stepped closer.

"Don't be."

Riva looked up.

Elara hugged her.

"You were afraid."

"I was."

"But you don't have to be anymore."

---

The Keeper smiled.

"Then give it back."

Riva looked at him.

"Give what back?"

"Her future."

Elara stepped away.

"How?"

The Keeper pointed toward the Gate.

"Beyond it."

Riva stared.

"The final Gate."

"Yes."

"What's beyond it?"

The Keeper answered:

"The future you stole."

---

The Gate opened.

There was no darkness beyond it.

No monster.

No army.

Only light.

Riva looked at Elara.

"You don't have to go."

Elara smiled.

"Yes, I do."

"Why?"

"Because it's mine."

Riva nodded.

Caelan stepped forward.

"I'm coming."

Elara smiled.

"Of course."

Nyra joined them.

"So am I."

Lyra raised her sword.

"You're not leaving me behind."

Naren sighed.

"I suppose I'm coming too."

Seris looked at the Gate.

"I've waited my whole life for this."

Riva smiled.

"Then let's finish it."

---

They walked through.

The world changed.

There was no ground.

No sky.

No time.

Only endless possibilities.

Riva saw herself as a child.

Then as the First Creator.

Then as a queen.

Then as a mother.

Then as a woman standing alone.

Elara saw herself in hundreds of lives.

A warrior.

A princess.

A farmer.

A healer.

A villain.

A stranger.

A mother.

A child.

A woman who never met Riva.

Every possibility existed.

Every future waited.

Elara whispered:

"How do I choose?"

Riva answered:

"You don't have to choose all of them."

"But what if I choose wrong?"

"Then choose again."

Elara smiled.

---

Suddenly, one future appeared before them.

The world was burning.

Elara stood at its center.

Her eyes were black.

Riva froze.

"This is the future I saw."

Elara stared.

She looked exactly as Riva remembered.

The final Crown floated above her.

Millions of worlds were collapsing around her.

A voice echoed:

"Choose."

Elara looked at Riva.

"Is this what you were afraid of?"

Riva nodded.

"Yes."

Elara stepped toward the vision.

"What happens if I choose this future?"

Riva answered:

"You destroy everything."

Elara looked at the burning worlds.

Then she turned away.

"Then I won't choose it."

The vision cracked.

Riva stared.

"That's it?"

Elara smiled.

"Yes."

The entire future shattered.

---

The Keeper laughed softly.

"Do you see?"

Riva nodded.

"She was never destined to destroy anything."

"No."

"She was always capable of choosing."

"Yes."

"Then why did I see this?"

The Keeper looked at her.

"Because you were afraid enough to create it."

Riva froze.

"What?"

"Your fear created the possibility."

"The future wasn't a prophecy."

"It was a warning."

---

The final Gate began disappearing.

Elara reached for Riva.

"Mother."

Riva took her hand.

"I'm here."

Elara smiled.

"I know."

They walked back toward the light.

But just before they left...

Riva stopped.

Something lay on the ground.

A small golden thread.

She picked it up.

The Keeper's face changed.

"Don't."

Riva looked at him.

"What is it?"

"Her future."

Riva stared at the thread.

"It still exists."

"Yes."

"Then what should I do with it?"

The Keeper smiled.

"Give it to her."

Riva looked at Elara.

She placed the thread in her daughter's hand.

The moment Elara touched it...

The universe went silent.

Then a single image appeared.

Not a battle.

Not a kingdom.

Not a Crown.

Not death.

A simple house.

A garden.

Children laughing.

Elara standing beside someone.

Someone whose face was hidden.

Riva stared.

"Who is that?"

Elara looked at the image.

"I don't know."

The image disappeared.

The golden thread remained.

Elara smiled.

"That's okay."

Riva looked at her.

"Why?"

"Because now..."

She closed her hand around the thread.

"...I get to find out."

---

They returned to the village.

The Gate closed behind them.

The old Keeper disappeared.

The night was quiet.

Riva looked at Elara.

"How do you feel?"

Elara smiled.

"Free."

Riva nodded.

Then she looked toward the stars.

For the first time...

She didn't see possible futures.

She saw only stars.

Caelan stood beside her.

"So."

Riva looked at him.

"Is that finally the end?"

Riva smiled.

"I think so."

Then the golden thread in Elara's hand began glowing.

She looked down.

A single word appeared on it.

BEGIN.

Elara looked at her mother.

Riva smiled.

"Then begin."

And somewhere beyond the final Gate...

A new future opened.

Not written.

Not predicted.

Not controlled.

Chosen.
