BOOK FOUR: THE KINGDOM BEYOND THE LAST GATE

Chapter 35: The Choice to Stay

Morning arrived quietly.

No alarms.

No armies.

No mysterious voices.

Just sunlight spreading across the valley.

Riva stood outside the house, watching Elara train with Lyra.

Elara moved quickly.

Lyra blocked her strike.

"Again."

Elara attacked.

Lyra stepped aside.

"Too slow."

Elara frowned.

"I thought you were supposed to teach me."

"I am."

"Then teach me."

Lyra smiled.

"First lesson."

She lowered her sword.

"Stop fighting like you're trying to prove something."

Elara looked confused.

"Then what am I fighting for?"

Lyra looked toward Riva.

"That's something you have to decide."

---

Riva smiled.

She remembered a time when every answer had been written for her.

Now even the smallest choice belonged to them.

Caelan walked beside her.

"You look worried."

"I'm thinking."

"That's usually dangerous."

Riva laughed.

"About Elara."

"She's fine."

"I know."

"Then?"

Riva looked at her daughter.

"She doesn't know who she is without a destiny."

Caelan understood.

"Neither did you."

Riva nodded.

"Exactly."

---

That afternoon, Elara disappeared.

Riva noticed immediately.

"Where is she?"

Lyra shook her head.

"She left after training."

"Alone?"

"Yes."

Riva turned toward the forest.

Caelan followed.

"Don't."

Riva stopped.

"What?"

"Let her go."

Riva looked at him.

"She's my daughter."

"Yes."

"Then I should protect her."

Caelan smiled.

"Maybe protecting her means letting her walk alone."

Riva hated that he was right.

But she nodded.

---

Elara walked deep into the forest.

She reached a small lake.

The water was perfectly still.

She sat beside it.

For the first time since the Crowns disappeared...

She felt empty.

Not powerless.

Not afraid.

Just empty.

She looked at her reflection.

"Who am I?"

The reflection smiled.

But Elara didn't.

"I was a Crown-bearer."

The reflection remained silent.

"I was supposed to replace my mother."

Nothing.

"I was created to save worlds."

Nothing.

"I was created from her."

Still nothing.

Elara closed her eyes.

"What am I supposed to be now?"

A voice answered.

"Whatever you want."

Elara opened her eyes.

Nyra stood behind her.

Elara smiled.

"You followed me."

"No."

"I was already here."

Elara frowned.

"How?"

Nyra sat beside her.

"I've spent most of my existence hiding."

"From what?"

"Myself."

Elara looked at her.

"Do you still hate Mother?"

Nyra thought for a moment.

"No."

"Do you love her?"

Nyra smiled.

"I'm learning."

Elara nodded.

"Me too."

---

Nyra picked up a small stone.

"Do you know why Riva created you?"

Elara shook her head.

"Not completely."

"Because she wanted to know what would happen if she stopped controlling something."

Elara looked at her.

"So I was an experiment."

"No."

Nyra threw the stone into the lake.

"You were her first act of trust."

Elara smiled faintly.

"I like that better."

"You should."

---

They sat silently.

Then Elara asked:

"Do you ever wish you were the only one?"

Nyra looked at her.

"The only what?"

"The only version."

Nyra smiled sadly.

"Every day."

Elara looked at the water.

"I used to think being special meant being alone."

Nyra nodded.

"And now?"

"Now I think being special means finding people who don't need you to be special."

Nyra smiled.

"That's a very Riva answer."

Elara laughed.

"Maybe."

---

Back at the village, Riva sat beside the fire.

Seris joined her.

"You let her go."

Riva nodded.

"Yes."

"That was difficult."

"Very."

Seris looked at her.

"You've changed."

Riva smiled.

"Everyone keeps saying that."

"Because it's true."

Riva stared into the flames.

"Do you miss the old world?"

Seris thought.

"Sometimes."

"The Crowns?"

"No."

"The power?"

"Never."

"The memories?"

Seris smiled.

"Some of them."

Riva looked at her.

"Which ones?"

"The ordinary ones."

"Ordinary?"

"People laughing."

"People cooking."

"Children playing."

"Someone falling in love."

"Someone getting angry over something meaningless."

Riva smiled.

"Those are the memories worth keeping."

---

A figure approached.

Naren.

He looked exhausted.

Riva stood.

"What happened?"

Naren held out his hand.

A tiny blue light rested in his palm.

Riva frowned.

"The Blue Crown?"

"No."

"Then what?"

Naren shook his head.

"I don't know."

The light floated upward.

It formed a symbol.

A circle.

Then another circle appeared inside it.

Riva stared.

"What does it mean?"

Naren answered:

"I think it's a message."

"From whom?"

"I don't know."

The symbol suddenly changed.

A single word appeared.

REMEMBER.

Riva's expression changed.

"Remember what?"

The light vanished.

Naren looked at her.

"That's the problem."

---

That evening, Elara returned.

Riva immediately walked toward her.

"Are you okay?"

Elara nodded.

"I'm fine."

"Where were you?"

"Thinking."

Riva smiled.

"About what?"

"Who I want to become."

Riva waited.

Elara looked at her.

"I don't want to be a Creator."

Riva nodded.

"I don't want to be a Crown-bearer."

"Okay."

"I don't want to be the person who saves everyone."

Riva smiled.

"Good."

Elara laughed.

"You aren't going to argue?"

"No."

"Why?"

"Because it's your choice."

Elara hugged her.

"Then I choose to stay."

Riva held her tightly.

"Stay?"

"Here."

"With you."

Riva closed her eyes.

"That's all I ever wanted."

---

Later that night, the village celebrated.

Music filled the streets.

People danced.

Children ran between houses.

Caelan tried to dance.

Riva stared at him.

"You're terrible."

"I know."

"Then why are you doing it?"

"Because you smiled."

Riva laughed.

"You are impossible."

"Maybe."

He took her hand.

They danced beneath the stars.

For once, nobody watched them as rulers.

Nobody called them chosen.

Nobody expected them to save anything.

They were simply two people.

Together.

---

Across the village, Elara watched them.

Nyra stood beside her.

"They look happy."

"They do."

"Does that make you sad?"

Elara smiled.

"No."

"Why?"

"Because happiness isn't something you lose when someone else has it."

Nyra looked at her.

"You're becoming wise."

Elara laughed.

"Don't tell Mother."

"I won't."

---

The celebration continued until midnight.

Then the music stopped.

Everyone looked toward the eastern Gate.

It had opened.

No one had touched it.

No one had activated it.

A man stepped through.

He was old.

Very old.

He carried a wooden staff.

Seris immediately stood.

Her face went pale.

Riva noticed.

"Who is he?"

Seris whispered:

"The last Keeper."

Riva frowned.

"I thought the Keepers were gone."

"So did I."

The old man looked directly at Riva.

Then at Elara.

He smiled.

"Finally."

Riva stepped forward.

"Finally what?"

The old man raised his staff.

"I can return what was taken."

Riva's heart stopped.

"What was taken?"

He looked at Elara.

"Her future."

Elara froze.

The old man continued:

"Someone removed it before she was born."

Riva's expression hardened.

"Who?"

The old man looked toward the dark forest.

"Yourself."

Silence.

Riva shook her head.

"No."

The old man smiled sadly.

"You don't remember."

"Remember what?"

He pointed at the ground.

A faint golden symbol appeared.

The same symbol Naren had seen.

REMEMBER.

The old man whispered:

"You didn't create Elara's future."

"You stole it."

Riva stared at him.

"Why?"

The old man looked at her.

"Because you already knew what she would become."

Elara stepped forward.

"What?"

The old man looked directly into her eyes.

"You."

He paused.

"The final choice."
