Chapter 93 - chapter 31

BOOK THREE: THE FALL OF THE FIRST KINGDOM

Chapter 31: The One Who Was Before

The First Gate opened.

No sound came from it.

No explosion.

No wind.

No warning.

It simply opened.

A thin line of silver appeared in the darkness of the Archives.

Then the line widened.

And widened.

Until an enormous doorway stood above the collapsing library.

Everyone stared.

Even Elara looked afraid.

Riva held the broken pieces of the silver key in her hands.

"The Flames..."

"They're gone."

The Last Unwriter looked toward the Gate.

"No."

"They aren't gone."

"They've been taken."

---

The First Guardian stepped forward.

"Who took them?"

Elara slowly looked upward.

"Someone who existed before me."

Riva's heart sank.

"Before you?"

Elara nodded.

"I was the First Keeper."

"But I wasn't the first thing to exist."

---

The Gate opened wider.

A figure appeared beyond it.

At first...

It looked like a shadow.

Then a silhouette.

Then a person.

A tall man stepped through.

He wore a long white coat covered with ancient symbols.

His hair was completely silver.

His face looked young.

But his eyes...

His eyes contained entire galaxies.

The First Guardian fell to his knees.

"No..."

The man smiled.

"You remember me."

---

Riva looked at the Guardian.

"Who is he?"

The Guardian couldn't answer.

It was Elara who spoke.

"His name is Aurelion."

The man smiled.

"The First Witness."

"The first being to remember existence."

---

Aurelion looked around the Archives.

"How beautiful."

"So many memories."

"So many stories."

"So much wasted potential."

He raised one hand.

The two Flames appeared above his palm.

Hope.

Memory.

They were trapped inside transparent spheres of light.

---

Riva stepped forward.

"Give them back."

Aurelion looked at her.

"You still don't understand."

"You cannot save every story."

Riva shook her head.

"Maybe not."

"But that doesn't mean we stop trying."

Aurelion smiled.

"That answer is exactly why I chose you."

---

Lucien stepped beside Riva.

"You chose us?"

Aurelion nodded.

"I have been watching you since the first Gate opened."

"The Four were never an accident."

Eva's eyes widened.

"The four of us..."

"Were chosen?"

"Yes."

---

Aurelion looked toward the others.

"Each of you carries something the old Guardians lacked."

"Riva carries remembrance."

"Parna carries life."

"Eva carries truth."

"Aarvi carries connection."

"Lucien carries protection."

"Orion carries duty."

"And Caelan..."

He paused.

"...carries choice."

Caelan frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Aurelion smiled.

"You will understand soon."

---

The First Guardian slowly stood.

"You cannot have them."

Aurelion looked at him.

"You said that once before."

The Guardian froze.

"You..."

"You were there."

Aurelion nodded.

"I watched you erase Elara."

"I watched you create the First Promise."

"And I watched you seal the Gate."

---

Elara stepped forward.

"You allowed it."

Aurelion looked at her.

"I did."

"Why?"

"Because I wanted to see what humanity would do with freedom."

Elara's expression hardened.

"And now?"

Aurelion's smile disappeared.

"Now I have my answer."

---

He raised his hand.

The Archives began disappearing.

Books vanished.

Walls disappeared.

Even the floor beneath them turned transparent.

Aarvi cried out.

"We're falling!"

Orion raised his shield.

The others gathered together.

Riva looked at Aurelion.

"What answer?"

He looked toward the broken worlds beyond the Gate.

"That freedom creates chaos."

"Promises create suffering."

"Memories create regret."

"And hope..."

He looked at the golden Flame.

"...creates disappointment."

---

Riva shook her head.

"You're wrong."

Aurelion's eyes narrowed.

"Am I?"

She stepped forward.

"Hope isn't about knowing you'll win."

"It's about continuing even when you don't know."

The golden Flame flickered.

Aurelion looked at it.

For the first time...

He seemed uncertain.

---

Elara smiled faintly.

"She understands."

Aurelion turned toward her.

"Don't interfere."

Elara stepped beside Riva.

"I've already interfered."

"You erased me."

"You created the Unwriting."

"And now..."

She looked at the broken Archives.

"...we're going to remember everything."

---

Suddenly...

The black tree behind them transformed.

Its branches became silver.

Thousands of glowing names appeared.

Every person who had ever been forgotten began returning to the world.

The Archives filled with voices.

Names.

Stories.

Memories.

The darkness began retreating.

Aurelion stared at the tree.

"What have you done?"

Elara smiled.

"I gave them back their names."

---

The Last Unwriter stepped forward.

His blue Flame of Memory appeared.

But this time...

It wasn't alone.

Hundreds of tiny blue flames appeared around him.

Memories from people across countless worlds.

He looked at Riva.

"You were right."

"Memory doesn't belong to one person."

"It belongs to everyone who chooses to remember."

---

The blue flames rushed toward the silver key fragments.

The broken pieces began reconnecting.

First one piece.

Then another.

The key rebuilt itself.

The Flame of Memory returned.

Then the golden Flame of Hope followed.

The two Flames burned together.

---

Aurelion's expression changed.

"You cannot restore the Key."

Riva looked at him.

"We already did."

The silver key floated into her hand.

The two Flames burned brighter than ever.

Aurelion slowly raised his hand.

"Then prove your belief."

The entire Gate behind him opened.

Beyond it...

Thousands of worlds appeared.

Some were dying.

Some were fighting.

Some were peaceful.

Some were already empty.

Aurelion spoke:

"Choose."

"Save one."

"Or lose them all."

---

Everyone stared at Riva.

She looked at the worlds.

Then at her friends.

Then at Elara.

Then at the First Guardian.

Finally...

She looked at Aurelion.

"I refuse."

He frowned.

"You refuse to choose?"

"No."

Riva lifted the silver key.

"I refuse to believe those are the only choices."

The key exploded with light.

The Seven symbols appeared across the sky.

Only two were glowing.

Five remained dark.

The First Guardian suddenly understood.

"The Seven Flames..."

"They were never meant to be collected."

Riva turned toward him.

"Then what were they meant for?"

He smiled.

"To awaken the Seven Keepers."

---

Across the distant worlds...

Five lights suddenly appeared.

Five people opened their eyes.

Five ancient Flames answered the call.

The Flame of Courage.

The Flame of Wisdom.

The Flame of Compassion.

The Flame of Sacrifice.

The Flame of Beginning.

All five awakened.

Aurelion stepped backward.

For the first time...

He looked afraid.

"No..."

The First Guardian whispered:

"The Seven have chosen."

Riva looked at her friends.

"We're not alone."

Above them...

Seven enormous Flames appeared across the heavens.

The final battle had begun.
