BOOK THREE: THE FALL OF THE FIRST KINGDOM
Chapter 27: The Lighthouse of Dawn
The crystal bridge continued collapsing behind them.
One piece disappeared.
Then another.
The darkness spread across the floating island like spilled ink.
Riva ran at the front of the group, clutching the silver key.
Ahead of her...
The Lighthouse of Dawn stood in complete darkness.
Only one tiny golden spark remained at its highest point.
"We're almost there!" Lucien shouted.
Aarvi looked behind them.
"The bridge!"
The last section of crystal shattered.
There was nowhere left to go except forward.
---
The Six Heirs reached the island just as the final piece of the bridge disappeared.
They stopped to catch their breath.
The lighthouse towered above them.
Its walls were made from translucent golden stone.
Ancient symbols covered its surface.
At the entrance stood a massive circular door.
No handle.
No lock.
Only a single sentence:
"Hope cannot be entered. It must be carried."
Riva touched the door.
Nothing happened.
Eva examined the inscription.
"Maybe the key opens it."
She held the silver key near the door.
Still nothing.
Lucien tried pushing.
Nothing.
Parna touched the flowers growing beside the entrance.
They immediately bloomed.
But the door remained closed.
Aarvi frowned.
"So what does it want?"
The Last Unwriter looked at the inscription.
"Hope cannot be entered."
He looked at Riva.
"It must be carried."
Riva understood.
"Then maybe..."
She turned toward the others.
"We're not supposed to open it."
"We're supposed to bring something inside."
---
Suddenly...
A faint crying sound came from behind the lighthouse.
Everyone turned.
A small golden bird was trapped beneath a fallen piece of stone.
Its wings were damaged.
Aarvi immediately ran toward it.
"Wait!"
Lucien followed.
Together, they lifted the stone.
The little bird struggled to stand.
Aarvi gently picked it up.
"It's hurt."
Parna placed her hand over the bird.
A soft green glow surrounded it.
Its wings slowly healed.
The bird opened its eyes.
Then...
It flew toward the lighthouse door.
A tiny golden feather fell from its wings.
Riva caught it.
The door immediately opened.
---
Aarvi smiled.
"Hope."
The First Guardian nodded.
"Exactly."
"The Flame of Hope doesn't respond to power."
"It responds to those who choose to protect something fragile."
---
Inside the lighthouse was a massive spiral staircase.
Golden light surrounded every step.
The group climbed quickly.
But as they reached the second level...
The walls changed.
Images appeared around them.
The First Kingdom.
The people of Aurelia.
The day they disappeared.
The faces of those who had been forgotten.
Then...
The images began fading.
One by one.
Riva stopped.
"They're being erased."
The Last Unwriter nodded.
"The Unwriting has reached this world."
---
A voice whispered through the tower.
"Why remember?"
Riva looked around.
"Who said that?"
The voice answered.
"Why carry pain that belongs to the past?"
Another image appeared.
Riva saw herself standing in the orphanage.
No Gates.
No battles.
No destiny.
Just a peaceful life.
She watched herself laughing with people she loved.
The voice whispered:
"You could stay."
Riva's heart ached.
For a moment...
She wanted to.
---
Lucien saw another vision.
A life where no one needed him to fight.
Eva saw a world where every mystery had an answer.
Parna saw an endless forest untouched by danger.
Aarvi saw her family together again.
Orion saw everyone he had ever protected living peacefully.
Caelan saw Aurelia restored exactly as it had been.
Each of them stood frozen.
---
The First Guardian shouted:
"Don't listen!"
But the visions became stronger.
The voice whispered:
"You don't need to save the world."
"You only need to choose your own happiness."
Aarvi's eyes filled with tears.
"Maybe..."
"Maybe we deserve that."
Riva looked at her.
Then at everyone else.
She remembered the old woman's words.
Never walk alone.
She reached for Aarvi's hand.
"We do deserve happiness."
"But we don't have to abandon everyone else to find it."
One by one...
The others joined hands.
The visions began cracking.
The false worlds shattered like glass.
---
The voice screamed.
The lighthouse shook violently.
"You choose suffering!"
Riva answered calmly.
"No."
"We choose each other."
The golden light returned.
The staircase brightened.
The voice disappeared.
---
At the top of the lighthouse...
They found a circular chamber.
In its center floated a tiny golden flame.
It was barely alive.
The Flame of Hope.
But surrounding it were black tendrils.
They were slowly consuming it.
The Last Unwriter stepped forward.
"This is what has been protecting the Flame."
"The lighthouse is losing."
Lucien drew his sword.
"Then we'll help it."
He attacked the darkness.
The blade cut through several tendrils.
Parna summoned silver vines.
Eva created glowing symbols.
Orion raised his shield.
Aarvi surrounded the flame with warm golden light.
Caelan stepped forward.
The silver feather appeared above his hand.
Riva held the silver key toward the flame.
The flame suddenly grew brighter.
The black tendrils recoiled.
But one remained.
A massive strand of darkness wrapped around the Flame of Hope.
The Last Unwriter stared at it.
"I know this."
His expression changed.
"It was the same thing that erased my name."
Riva looked at him.
"Then help us destroy it."
He hesitated.
Then...
He stepped forward.
His blue Flame of Memory appeared in his palm.
He pressed it against the darkness.
The two powers collided.
The tower shook.
The Last Unwriter cried out in pain.
But he didn't let go.
"Remember me..."
he whispered.
"Remember all of us..."
The darkness began breaking apart.
The golden Flame of Hope suddenly exploded with light.
The entire lighthouse illuminated the sky.
The black tendrils vanished.
The Last Unwriter fell to his knees.
Riva caught him before he hit the ground.
The golden flame floated toward her.
Instead of entering her body...
It entered the silver key.
The key now contained a tiny golden light.
One of the seven symbols on its surface illuminated.
The First Flame had been restored.
---
Outside...
The darkness covering the floating island disappeared.
The clouds became golden.
Stars returned to the sky.
The Lighthouse of Dawn shone brighter than ever.
The First Guardian smiled.
"One Flame."
"Six remain."
Riva looked at the map.
Six golden points remained.
But one of them...
Had already begun turning black.
Eva's expression changed.
"That's not good."
The First Guardian looked toward the distant sky.
"The Flame of Memory..."
"...is under attack."
The Last Unwriter slowly stood.
His eyes hardened.
"Then we know where we're going next."
Far away, beyond the clouds...
A second lighthouse disappeared into darkness.
And somewhere within that darkness...
Something whispered:
"One Flame has returned."
"Six more will fall."
The race had begun.
