Chapter 90 - chapter 28

BOOK THREE: THE FALL OF THE FIRST KINGDOM

Chapter 28: The Flame of Memory

The golden light of the Lighthouse of Dawn slowly faded.

The floating island had returned to peace.

For the first time since they arrived, the Covenant could see the stars clearly.

One golden flame burned brightly inside the silver key.

The Flame of Hope.

But six other lights remained on the map.

Five were still glowing.

One was flickering violently.

The Flame of Memory.

---

The Last Unwriter stood at the edge of the island.

His face was unusually serious.

"The Flame of Memory is in the Archives of Eternity."

Eva looked at the map.

"Where is that?"

"Beyond the Sea of Forgotten Names."

Aarvi frowned.

"That sounds cheerful."

The Last Unwriter almost smiled.

"It isn't."

---

The First Guardian stepped toward him.

"You've been there before."

The Unwriter nodded.

"Once."

"What happened?"

He looked at the blackened horizon.

"I forgot."

Silence.

Eva immediately understood.

"The Sea erased your memories."

"Yes."

"And you still went back?"

"I had to."

---

Riva looked at the map.

"Then that's where we're going."

The First Guardian shook his head.

"Be careful."

"The Archives don't attack your body."

"They attack your memories."

"What happens if they erase everything?"

The Guardian answered quietly.

"You may forget why you came."

---

The group left the Lighthouse of Dawn.

A golden bridge formed beneath their feet, leading toward a distant sea suspended among the clouds.

They walked for hours.

The farther they traveled...

The quieter the world became.

No birds.

No wind.

No sound.

Then they reached the shore.

The Sea of Forgotten Names stretched endlessly before them.

Its water was perfectly still.

Yet countless names floated across its surface.

Some appeared in silver.

Others in gold.

Many were fading.

---

Parna knelt beside the water.

"I can hear voices."

Riva listened.

She heard them too.

Thousands of voices.

Calling names.

Remembering lives.

Begging not to disappear.

The Last Unwriter whispered,

"Don't answer them."

"Why?"

"Because some of them aren't real."

---

A small boat waited near the shore.

It looked ancient.

Its wooden surface was covered with names.

Riva stepped inside.

Everyone followed.

The boat began moving without anyone steering it.

---

For several minutes...

Nothing happened.

Then Aarvi suddenly looked around.

"Where are we going?"

Eva frowned.

"The Archives."

Aarvi looked confused.

"What Archives?"

Everyone froze.

The Last Unwriter immediately stood.

"Don't panic."

Aarvi stared at him.

"Who are you?"

His face went pale.

The sea had already begun erasing her memories.

---

Riva grabbed Aarvi's hand.

"I'm Riva."

Aarvi looked at her.

"Riva..."

She repeated the name slowly.

A tiny spark appeared in her eyes.

"You're..."

"My friend."

The sea rippled.

Aarvi remembered.

The Last Unwriter exhaled.

"Don't let go of each other."

---

The boat continued.

Soon, Parna forgot the name of the White Tree.

Then Lucien forgot why he carried the Blade of Dawn.

Eva forgot the First Kingdom.

Orion forgot his own purpose.

Caelan forgot his father.

One by one...

Their memories disappeared.

Riva felt panic rising inside her.

Then she remembered something.

She opened her notebook.

The pages were filled with names.

Their names.

Their promises.

Their journey.

She began reading aloud.

"Riva."

"Lucien."

"Eva."

"Parna."

"Aarvi."

"Orion."

"Caelan."

The others repeated their names.

Again.

And again.

The sea grew restless.

The boat shook.

But the memories returned.

---

The Last Unwriter stared at Riva.

"You found the answer."

"What?"

"Memory isn't stored only in the mind."

"It lives in the people who remember you."

---

At last...

The Archives appeared.

A colossal city stood on the surface of the sea.

Its towers were made entirely from books.

Millions of glowing pages floated through the air.

Every book contained someone's memories.

The boat stopped.

A golden path formed toward the entrance.

Above the gates were four words:

EVERY MEMORY HAS A PRICE.

---

Inside...

The group entered a vast circular library.

Books floated everywhere.

Some opened by themselves.

Others whispered.

At the center of the library stood a massive black tree.

Its branches were covered with glowing memories.

At its roots...

Burned the Flame of Memory.

But it was surrounded by darkness.

The Last Unwriter immediately recognized it.

"The Unwriting found it."

---

Suddenly...

The black tree spoke.

"Why do you want the Flame?"

The First Guardian answered.

"To save the Gates."

The tree replied:

"Then sacrifice something you remember."

Everyone froze.

Aarvi whispered,

"What?"

The tree repeated:

"Every memory saved requires another memory to be given."

---

Riva stepped forward.

"No."

The tree's branches moved.

"Then the Flame will remain."

Riva looked at her friends.

Nobody wanted to lose a memory.

But the Flame was fading.

Slowly.

The Last Unwriter stepped forward.

"I'll do it."

Riva grabbed his arm.

"What will you sacrifice?"

He smiled.

"The last memory of my family."

Everyone stared at him.

"You can't."

"I can."

He approached the Flame.

A single black thread wrapped around his heart.

His eyes filled with tears.

"I don't remember their faces anymore."

"But I remember that I loved them."

The thread pulled.

The memory disappeared.

The Unwriter fell to his knees.

The Flame of Memory suddenly blazed with blue light.

The black tree turned silver.

The entire Archives illuminated.

---

Riva rushed toward him.

"Are you okay?"

He looked up.

For the first time...

He seemed completely empty.

"I..."

He struggled to speak.

"I think..."

"I just lost something important."

Riva sat beside him.

"You don't have to remember it alone."

The Flame of Memory floated toward the silver key.

A second symbol illuminated.

The Flame was restored.

---

But before anyone could celebrate...

A book fell from the sky.

It landed at Riva's feet.

Its cover was black.

There was no title.

She opened it.

The first page contained only one sentence:

"You cannot save every story."

The second page turned by itself.

A list appeared.

Seven names.

Seven Flames.

Beside six of them was a golden symbol.

Beside the seventh...

There was a black mark.

Eva stared at it.

"The Flame of Beginning..."

"It's already been corrupted."

The Last Unwriter looked toward the darkness beyond the Archives.

"No."

"It's worse than corrupted."

He slowly stood.

"Someone has already claimed it."

Far above the Archives...

A seventh star disappeared.

And somewhere in the darkness...

A familiar voice laughed.

"Come find me."
