BOOK THREE: The Fall of the First Kingdom
Chapter 26: The Seven Flames
The map of golden light floated above the silver key.
Seven brilliant flames burned across it.
Each rested in a different corner of existence.
The First Guardian stared at the glowing map.
"I never thought I would see this."
Eva looked up from her notebook.
"What exactly are the Seven Flames?"
The old gardener answered softly.
"They are older than the Gates."
"They were burning long before the first Promise was ever spoken."
---
Riva looked at the seven lights.
"They don't look like ordinary fire."
"They aren't," Seren replied.
"They are living flames."
"They choose their own Keepers."
---
The Last Unwriter stepped closer.
"For thousands of years..."
"I searched for them."
"I only found one."
He opened his hand.
A tiny ember glowed in his palm.
It burned with deep blue light.
"The Flame of Memory."
"It has kept my own existence from being erased."
The ember drifted into the air before returning to his hand.
---
The First Guardian nodded.
"The Seven Flames each guard something essential."
He pointed to the map.
"The Flame of Hope."
"The Flame of Memory."
"The Flame of Courage."
"The Flame of Wisdom."
"The Flame of Compassion."
"The Flame of Sacrifice."
"And..."
He paused.
"The Flame of Beginning."
---
Caelan frowned.
"Which one do we need?"
The Guardian smiled sadly.
"All of them."
"The darkness cannot be sealed unless the Seven Flames burn together."
---
Suddenly...
The silver key flashed brightly.
One of the seven lights expanded.
A golden pathway appeared in the sky.
It led toward a distant island floating above endless clouds.
The island was crowned by a magnificent lighthouse.
Its flame shone brighter than the stars.
Eva studied the map.
"That's the nearest Flame."
---
The Last Unwriter nodded.
"The Lighthouse of Dawn."
"The home of the Flame of Hope."
Lucien grinned.
"Then we know where we're going."
---
Before anyone could leave...
The mountain trembled violently.
The First Gate released a deep roar.
Dark cracks spread across its surface.
Not from outside...
But from within.
The First Guardian's expression darkened.
"It's trying to break through."
---
Aster's gentle voice echoed faintly from behind the sealed Gate.
"Hurry..."
"The light is fading..."
Then...
Silence.
---
The Covenant descended the mountain.
As they reached the Valley of Echoes, they found it transformed.
The white flowers had turned gray.
The once peaceful cliffs were covered in black cracks.
Even the echoes were gone.
No voices.
No memories.
Nothing.
Aarvi whispered,
"It's being erased."
---
Parna knelt beside a dying flower.
She placed her hand upon it.
A single silver bloom appeared.
Then another.
Then dozens more.
Life slowly returned.
The Last Unwriter watched quietly.
"So that's why the Key chose all of you."
"You restore what others have forgotten."
---
As evening fell...
The Covenant reached the edge of an enormous cliff.
Beyond it stretched an endless ocean of clouds.
Floating above the clouds...
They saw the Lighthouse of Dawn.
Its golden beacon shone across the sky.
Between them and the lighthouse stood an ancient bridge made entirely of crystal.
Half of it had already disappeared into darkness.
The remaining half continued crumbling.
Lucien looked at the bridge.
"If it collapses..."
"We'll never reach the lighthouse."
The First Guardian nodded.
"We don't have much time."
---
The Covenant stepped onto the bridge.
With every step...
Pieces of crystal vanished behind them.
There was no turning back.
Halfway across...
The golden beacon suddenly flickered.
Once.
Twice.
Then...
It went out.
Darkness swallowed the floating island.
A chilling voice echoed across the clouds.
"The First Flame has fallen."
Every member of the Covenant froze.
The map above the silver key changed.
The Flame of Hope...
Had disappeared.
The Last Unwriter closed his eyes.
"We're too late..."
But then...
Far within the darkness surrounding the lighthouse...
A tiny spark of gold flickered once more.
Weak.
Fragile.
Yet still alive.
Riva gripped the silver key tightly.
"No."
"It hasn't gone out."
"As long as one spark remains..."
"There is still hope."
The Covenant broke into a run across the collapsing crystal bridge, racing against time toward the dying light.
