BOOK THREE: The Fall of the First Kingdom
Chapter 21: The Keeper of the Origin
The silver eyes watched from beyond the Gate.
They were enormous.
Ancient.
Neither kind nor cruel.
Simply... eternal.
The voice echoed across the Hidden Valley once more.
"Who seeks the Origin of the Gates?"
No one answered.
Even the First Guardian remained silent.
---
The White Tree began glowing brighter than ever before.
Its roots stretched across the valley, wrapping gently around the Crystal Tower.
Every leaf shimmered with silver and gold light.
The Gate above responded.
Its enormous stone rings slowly began turning.
Ancient symbols, older than any language, appeared around its edges.
Eva stared at them in amazement.
"I can't read them..."
The First Guardian smiled faintly.
"No one can."
"They existed before words."
---
A path of light extended from the Crystal Tower into the sky.
It stopped just before the massive Gate.
The voice spoke again.
"One may enter."
The words echoed through everyone's hearts.
Lucien immediately shook his head.
"No."
"We've come this far together."
The voice remained calm.
"The Origin accepts only one witness."
---
Silence fell over the valley.
The Six Heirs exchanged uncertain glances.
Caelan stepped forward.
"I'll go."
The First Guardian gently stopped him.
"No."
"You still have a role here."
Seren stepped forward next.
"I have waited thousands of years."
The Guardian smiled sadly.
"And your waiting is over."
---
Riva looked at the White Tree.
The leaves weren't drifting toward the Gate.
They were drifting toward...
Her.
One silver leaf landed softly in her hand.
The ancient voice spoke.
"The Keeper has been chosen."
The White Tree's branches bent toward Riva.
The notebook in her hands opened on its own.
Across its blank pages appeared glowing words.
"The one who remembers... must witness the beginning."
---
Riva looked at her friends.
"I don't want to leave you."
Aarvi smiled warmly.
"You won't."
"We'll be waiting."
Lucien rested a hand on her shoulder.
"You've carried us this far."
"Now let us carry you."
Eva closed the notebook gently.
"Bring back the truth."
Parna handed Riva a single silver flower.
"So you'll always find your way home."
Orion simply nodded.
"We trust you."
---
Riva stepped onto the bridge of light.
With every step...
The Gate grew larger.
The silver eyes watched silently.
When she finally reached the threshold...
The Gate opened completely.
Inside...
There was no darkness.
Only endless white light.
---
The moment Riva crossed the threshold...
Everything disappeared.
She found herself standing in an endless field beneath a sky filled with countless stars.
There was no Crystal Tower.
No Hidden Valley.
No White Tree.
Only silence.
Then...
Footsteps.
Someone approached from the distance.
It wasn't a giant.
It wasn't a god.
It was a young woman dressed in flowing white robes.
Her long silver hair danced gently in the wind.
She smiled kindly.
"I've been waiting for you."
---
Riva frowned.
"Who are you?"
The woman bowed gracefully.
"I have been called many things."
"The First Keeper."
"The Gate Weaver."
"The Mother of Promises."
"But before all of those..."
She placed a hand over her heart.
"I was simply Lyra."
---
Riva felt an overwhelming sense of peace.
"Did you create the Gates?"
Lyra smiled.
"No."
"I only cared for them."
She pointed toward the stars above.
Each star slowly transformed into a Gate.
Thousands...
No...
Millions of them stretched across the heavens.
"Every Gate connects a different story."
"Every Promise protects a different future."
---
Riva stared in awe.
"There are... this many?"
Lyra nodded.
"And each one has its own Guardian."
She gently touched one glowing star.
It faded into darkness.
"Sometimes..."
"A story ends."
"Sometimes..."
"It begins again."
---
Suddenly...
One star near the center of the sky turned completely black.
Then another.
And another.
The darkness slowly spread across the endless heavens.
Lyra's gentle smile faded.
"It has started."
Riva looked at her.
"What has?"
Lyra whispered,
"The Unwriting."
---
The stars trembled.
Entire Gates disappeared into the darkness.
Not broken.
Erased.
As if they had never existed.
Riva stepped back in horror.
"Who's doing this?"
Lyra closed her eyes.
"For thousands of years..."
"I hoped it would never awaken again."
She slowly raised her hand.
A single black feather appeared in her palm.
"It has no name."
"It has no face."
"It exists only to erase every Promise ever made."
---
Before Riva could ask another question...
The black feather suddenly turned to ash.
A loud crack echoed across the endless sky.
Lyra looked upward.
Her expression changed from calm...
To fear.
"No..."
"It found this place."
The white field began breaking apart.
Stars shattered one after another.
The Gate behind Riva started closing.
Lyra hurried toward her.
"There isn't enough time."
She pressed a small silver key into Riva's hand.
"Protect this."
"What is it?" Riva asked.
Lyra smiled sadly.
"The Key to the First Gate."
"It must never fall into the wrong hands."
The world around them collapsed into blinding white light.
As Riva was pulled back toward the Hidden Valley...
She heard Lyra's final words echo through the fading sky.
"Tell them..."
"...the real war hasn't begun yet."
Riva emerged from the Gate and fell to her knees on the platform before the Crystal Tower.
The Six Heirs rushed to her side.
Lucien helped her stand.
"What did you see?"
Riva slowly opened her hand.
Resting in her palm...
Was the silver key.
Proof that everything had been real.
But far beyond the closing Gate...
Hidden within the spreading darkness...
A single shadow watched silently.
And for the first time...
It smiled.
