Chapter 72 - chapter 10

BOOK THREE: THE FALL OF THE FIRST KINGDOM

Chapter 10: The Sanctuary of the First King

The hidden passage descended deep beneath the Chamber of the First Promise.

Golden light illuminated the ancient stone staircase, though there were no torches.

The walls were carved with thousands of names.

Not kings.

Not queens.

Ordinary people.

Farmers.

Teachers.

Builders.

Children.

Riva gently ran her fingers across the carvings.

"They engraved everyone's names..."

The Chancellor smiled.

"In the First Kingdom, every life mattered."

---

The Six Heirs continued downward.

The deeper they traveled, the warmer the air became.

Parna noticed flowers growing from cracks in the stone.

"Nothing should survive this far underground."

Elias looked at the blossoms.

"They aren't ordinary flowers."

"They bloom only where a Promise has been kept."

---

At the bottom of the staircase stood another enormous door.

Unlike every other door they had encountered...

It had no lock.

No symbols.

No keyhole.

Only a single sentence carved across its surface.

"Only those who seek truth, not power, may enter."

Lucien instinctively reached for the handle.

Before he touched it...

The door slowly opened by itself.

---

Beyond it lay a breathtaking sanctuary.

A crystal river flowed through the center of the cavern.

Thousands of glowing butterflies drifted peacefully through the air.

Silver trees stretched toward a ceiling that looked like a night sky filled with stars.

In the middle of the sanctuary stood a simple wooden house.

No palace.

No throne room.

Just a modest home.

Aarvi stared in disbelief.

"The First King lived... here?"

The mysterious figure nodded.

"He believed a ruler should never live above the people."

---

Outside the house sat an elderly woman watering flowers.

She hummed softly as if expecting visitors.

When she looked up, she smiled warmly.

"Oh."

"You're finally here."

The Six Heirs froze.

She looked completely ordinary.

Gray hair.

Simple white clothes.

Gentle eyes.

Nothing about her suggested ancient power.

Yet Arcturus immediately knelt.

The Chancellor bowed deeply.

Even the mysterious figure lowered their head.

Riva whispered,

"Who is she?"

The woman chuckled.

"I've had many names."

"But most people simply called me..."

"Grandmother."

---

She stood and walked toward them.

One by one, she looked into each of their eyes.

When she reached Riva, she smiled.

"You still carry everyone's burdens."

To Lucien...

"You still pretend you're never afraid."

To Eva...

"You still chase answers without asking what they'll cost."

To Parna...

"You still listen before speaking."

To Aarvi...

"You still heal hearts with laughter."

To Orion...

"You still stand in front of danger instead of behind others."

None of them had spoken a word.

Yet she knew them.

---

Eva tightened her grip on the compass.

"Who are you... really?"

The old woman looked toward the White Tree growing beside the house.

Its silver leaves shimmered in the soft light.

"I was the gardener."

Everyone blinked.

"The gardener?"

She nodded.

"I planted the first White Tree."

---

Parna stepped closer.

"But the White Tree is older than history."

The old woman smiled.

"So am I."

---

Before anyone could ask another question...

The ground shook violently.

The butterflies scattered.

The crystal river darkened.

A deep crack split the sanctuary floor.

Black mist poured upward.

The White Tree's silver leaves began turning gray.

Arcturus immediately drew his sword.

"No..."

"It's happening again."

---

From the darkness rose a familiar object.

Not a monster.

Not a warrior.

An enormous black book bound in iron chains.

It floated above the river.

Its pages turned by themselves.

Every page it opened caused another part of the sanctuary to fade.

Flowers disappeared.

Trees crumbled.

The river slowly dried.

Eva gasped.

"It's rewriting the sanctuary!"

The mysterious figure's expression hardened.

"No."

"It's deleting it."

---

The old woman sighed sadly.

"It found us."

Lucien stepped in front of her.

"What is that thing?"

She looked at the floating book with sorrow.

"It is called..."

The Book of Oblivion.

"It does not destroy kingdoms."

"It erases them from memory."

---

The Six Heirs immediately attacked.

Lucien's Blade of Dawn struck the book.

The sword passed straight through it.

Parna's vines dissolved before reaching it.

Eva's symbols vanished.

Orion's shield couldn't block its invisible power.

One by one...

Their attacks failed.

---

The black book slowly opened to another page.

This time...

The names carved into the staircase outside began disappearing.

One by one.

As each name vanished...

A butterfly turned into dust.

The old woman looked heartbroken.

"They're forgetting themselves."

---

Riva suddenly remembered something.

"The copies..."

"They weren't defeated by strength."

She turned toward her friends.

"This isn't a battle."

"It's a memory."

Aarvi immediately understood.

"We have to remind the sanctuary who it is."

---

Without hesitation...

The Six Heirs spread throughout the sanctuary.

Eva began reading the names carved into the stones aloud.

Parna replanted the fading flowers.

Lucien repaired the broken wooden fence around the house.

Orion protected the White Tree.

Aarvi sang an old song her uncle had taught her.

Riva wrote every disappearing name into her notebook.

One by one...

The erased names returned to the stone.

The butterflies reappeared.

The river flowed again.

The White Tree bloomed with brilliant silver leaves.

The Book of Oblivion trembled violently.

For the first time...

Its pages stopped turning.

---

The old woman smiled proudly.

"You understand now."

"History survives..."

"...because someone chooses to remember."

The Book of Oblivion slowly closed.

But before it disappeared...

One loose page drifted from between its covers.

Riva caught it.

Unlike every other page...

It contained a complete sentence.

"Beware the Seventh Promise."

The page immediately turned blank.

The book vanished into the darkness.

Silence returned to the sanctuary.

The old woman looked toward the distant White Tree.

"The Seventh Promise..."

"I prayed no one would ever have to face it again."

Riva stepped closer.

"What is the Seventh Promise?"

The old woman closed her eyes.

For a long moment, she said nothing.

Then she whispered,

"It was the Promise that was never meant to be broken..."

Before she could continue...

A loud bell echoed across the sanctuary.

DONG...

DONG...

DONG...

The White Tree glowed brighter than ever before.

A hidden doorway slowly opened inside its trunk.

Warm golden light poured from within.

The old woman looked at the Six Heirs with tears in her eyes.

"He has awakened."

Lucien frowned.

"Who?"

The old woman smiled.

"The one you've been searching for since the beginning."

"The First King is waiting."
