BOOK THREE: THE FALL OF THE FIRST KINGDOM
Chapter 9: The Trial of Unity
The silver arena trembled beneath the feet of the Six Heirs.
Ancient runes floated through the air like stars.
Above them, glowing letters remained suspended in the sky.
THE TRIAL OF UNITY HAS BEGUN
No walls surrounded the arena.
Instead, countless memories floated beyond its edge.
Some showed the First Kingdom at its greatest.
Others showed cities the Six Heirs had never seen.
At the center stood Arcturus, the Guardian of the First Promise.
His cracked white mask reflected the silver light.
His deep voice echoed across the chamber.
"This trial has only one rule."
"You either succeed..."
"...together."
"...or fail together."
---
Lucien stepped forward.
"So what do we fight?"
Arcturus slowly raised his hand.
"You."
The arena suddenly transformed.
Six pillars of light erupted around the Heirs.
Each pillar created a perfect copy of one of them.
Another Riva.
Another Lucien.
Another Eva.
Another Parna.
Another Aarvi.
Another Orion.
The copies looked identical.
Even their relics were the same.
Aarvi groaned.
"I hate fighting myself."
---
The copies slowly opened their eyes.
But something was wrong.
Their expressions were cold.
Emotionless.
Their eyes glowed silver.
Arcturus spoke.
"They possess your strength."
"But none of your trust."
"If you fight alone..."
"They will defeat you."
---
Without warning...
The copies attacked.
Dark Riva's notebook released blades of silver paper.
Dark Lucien's sword crashed against the real Lucien.
Dark Eva summoned glowing symbols that exploded across the battlefield.
Dark Parna covered the arena with black vines.
Dark Aarvi created illusions that split into dozens of false enemies.
Dark Orion's shield slammed into the ground, creating a massive shockwave.
The Six Heirs were forced apart.
---
Lucien crossed swords with his double.
Every strike matched his own.
"You know every move..."
The copy smiled.
"I am every move."
Lucien realized brute strength would never win.
---
Across the arena...
Eva tried decoding the symbols surrounding her copy.
But every symbol she solved immediately changed.
"It's adapting..."
she whispered.
---
Parna's vines clashed against the black vines.
The more power she used...
The stronger her copy became.
"This isn't working!"
---
Aarvi attempted to trick her double with an illusion.
The copy laughed.
"I already know what you're thinking."
---
Orion blocked attack after attack.
Yet his copy never tired.
Every defensive move became another trap.
---
Riva watched everyone struggling.
The trial wasn't testing power.
It was exposing one weakness.
They were fighting separately.
Exactly what their enemies wanted.
---
She remembered the words carved above the Chamber.
Only those who trust one another more than themselves may enter.
Then she remembered Adrian.
Then the First King's memory.
Then the Promise.
Riva smiled.
"We're doing this wrong."
Lucien glanced toward her while blocking another strike.
"What?"
"We're trying to beat ourselves."
"We should be helping each other."
---
Without another word...
Riva ran away from her own opponent.
Instead of attacking...
She helped Eva.
Her notebook trapped Dark Eva long enough for Eva to decode the changing symbols.
"They're connected!"
Eva shouted.
"Every copy shares the same energy!"
Lucien immediately understood.
"So if we fight together..."
"We break the connection."
---
Parna spread silver vines—not toward the enemies...
But toward her friends.
The vines wrapped gently around their wrists.
Instead of trapping them...
They linked the Six Heirs together.
Warm silver light flowed between them.
Each could feel the others' strength.
Their fear disappeared.
---
Dark Lucien attacked again.
This time...
Orion blocked the strike.
Lucien immediately countered.
The copy stumbled backward.
For the first time...
It was injured.
---
Aarvi laughed.
"Now it's our turn!"
She created dozens of illusions.
But instead of confusing the enemy...
The illusions disguised her friends.
The copies hesitated.
They could no longer tell who was real.
Eva quickly activated the compass.
"It found the source!"
A glowing crystal floated high above the arena.
Hidden until now.
Every copy was connected to it.
---
"Riva!"
Eva shouted.
"The crystal!"
Riva nodded.
"I see it."
Lucien threw the Blade of Dawn high into the air.
Parna's vines launched Riva upward.
Orion created a shield beneath her feet.
Aarvi's illusion blinded the copies.
Eva calculated the perfect path.
Working as one...
Riva caught Lucien's sword in midair.
She struck the glowing crystal.
CRACK!
A burst of silver light exploded across the arena.
Every copy froze.
Then...
One by one...
They smiled.
Not cruelly.
Peacefully.
The copies bowed respectfully.
Then dissolved into countless silver stars.
---
The arena returned to normal.
The floating platforms disappeared.
The peaceful garden returned.
Arcturus slowly approached the Six Heirs.
For the first time...
He removed his broken white mask.
Beneath it was the face of an elderly man with kind, tired eyes.
He smiled proudly.
"You understand now."
Lucien sheathed his sword.
"The Covenant was never about six powerful people."
Arcturus nodded.
"It was about six people who trusted each other."
---
The Guardian placed one knee on the ground.
"I recognize the Covenant."
"I recognize the Promise."
"I recognize the Six Heirs."
The crystal orb above the stone table glowed brighter than ever.
The empty seventh chair released a pillar of golden light.
Deep beneath the Chamber...
Massive stone gears began turning.
A hidden passage slowly opened beneath the garden.
Warm golden light flowed upward.
The mysterious figure looked toward the opening.
"The path has finally opened."
The Chancellor whispered in disbelief.
"No one has entered that place..."
"...since the day the First Kingdom disappeared."
Riva looked down into the glowing passage.
"What is down there?"
Arcturus answered with quiet reverence.
"The Sanctuary of the First King."
He paused.
"And if the legends are true..."
"...someone is still waiting."
As the Six Heirs stepped toward the newly opened passage, none of them noticed a tiny crack spreading across the ancient white book resting on the stone table.
From inside the crack...
A single page silently tore itself free.
It floated into the darkness.
On that page, written in black ink instead of silver, were seven chilling words:
"The Seventh Promise was never fulfilled."
The page disappeared.
Far away...
A pair of unseen eyes slowly opened.
