Chapter 73 - chapter 11

BOOK THREE: THE FALL OF THE FIRST KINGDOM

Chapter 11: The First King

The bell echoed through the sanctuary.

DONG...

DONG...

DONG...

The ancient White Tree shimmered with brilliant silver light.

Its trunk slowly split open, revealing a narrow passage lined with glowing roots. A warm breeze drifted outward, carrying the scent of rain and blooming flowers.

No darkness.

No fear.

Only peace.

The old gardener smiled softly.

"He has waited a very long time."

Riva exchanged a glance with her friends.

Without speaking, the Six Heirs walked toward the opening.

---

The passage was unlike any place they had seen before.

The roots of the White Tree formed glowing arches overhead.

Silver butterflies flew silently between them.

The deeper they walked, the quieter the world became.

Eventually...

They reached a circular chamber.

There was no throne.

No royal banners.

Only a simple stone bench beneath the roots of the White Tree.

A man sat there quietly.

He wore plain white robes.

His silver hair reached his shoulders.

His hands rested on a wooden walking stick.

He looked no older than forty.

He wasn't surrounded by divine light.

He looked... ordinary.

Yet the moment the Six Heirs saw him...

Every fragment of the Heart began glowing.

Eva's compass bowed toward him.

Lucien's Blade of Dawn hummed softly.

Parna's flowers bloomed.

Aarvi's wooden box opened by itself.

Orion instinctively knelt.

Riva's notebook wrote a single sentence.

"The Promise remembers its Keeper."

The man looked up.

His eyes were kind.

Tired.

Gentle.

He smiled.

"Welcome."

"My children."

---

Silence filled the chamber.

Riva slowly stepped forward.

"Are you..."

"The First King?"

The man chuckled.

"I've been called that."

"But I preferred another title."

He stood and bowed politely.

"I was simply..."

"...the First Guardian."

---

Lucien frowned.

"Guardian?"

"You weren't a king?"

The man shook his head.

"The people insisted on calling me one."

"I never asked for a throne."

He looked toward the White Tree.

"A ruler stands above."

"A guardian stands beside."

"I chose to stand beside."

---

The old gardener entered the chamber and smiled.

"You still refuse to call yourself King."

The man laughed.

"And you still refuse to stop calling yourself a gardener."

The two shared a warm smile that spoke of centuries of friendship.

---

Aarvi whispered to Eva,

"They act like grandparents."

Eva smiled.

"I think they are."

---

The First Guardian turned toward the Six Heirs.

"You have questions."

Lucien answered immediately.

"We have hundreds."

The Guardian laughed.

"Then we'd better begin."

---

Riva stepped forward.

"Did the First Kingdom really disappear by its own choice?"

The smile slowly faded from the Guardian's face.

"Yes."

Every heart in the chamber grew heavy.

"But..."

"It wasn't because we were afraid."

---

Eva took out her notebook.

"Then why?"

The Guardian walked toward the crystal river.

He gently touched its surface.

Images appeared.

The Six Heirs watched as Aurelia flourished.

People from hundreds of kingdoms gathered together.

Knowledge was shared freely.

No one went hungry.

No one ruled through fear.

"It wasn't perfect," he said.

"But every day..."

"We tried to become better than the day before."

---

Another image appeared.

The White Tree began glowing brighter than ever before.

Its roots spread beyond Aurelia.

Connecting countless worlds.

"The White Tree grew stronger."

"So did the Gates."

Lucien nodded.

"That sounds like a good thing."

The Guardian remained silent.

Then he whispered,

"Until we discovered..."

"...what existed beyond them."

---

The river suddenly turned black.

The happy memories disappeared.

A vast emptiness appeared beyond the Gates.

Not darkness.

Not light.

Simply...

Nothing.

The Six Heirs felt an overwhelming emptiness.

Even hope seemed distant.

Parna shivered.

"What is that place?"

The Guardian closed his eyes.

"We never gave it a name."

"Some truths become more dangerous once they are named."

---

Riva remembered their promise.

She didn't ask what had happened beyond the Gates.

That mystery belonged to another story.

Instead, she asked,

"What did you do?"

The Guardian smiled proudly.

"We protected everyone."

---

He waved his hand.

The image changed once more.

The people of Aurelia gathered peacefully in the palace courtyard.

The same memory the Six Heirs had seen before.

Only this time...

It continued.

The Guardian stood before his people.

"My friends..."

"The path ahead is uncertain."

"I cannot promise victory."

"I cannot promise we will return."

"But I can promise this..."

"No child will inherit the burden we discovered."

The people smiled.

Not one person argued.

Not one person begged to stay.

Instead...

They stepped forward together.

An elderly baker.

A young mother.

A teacher.

A blacksmith.

Children holding their parents' hands.

Each person placed one hand over their heart.

Together they spoke.

"One Kingdom."

"One Promise."

"One Future."

---

Tears filled Riva's eyes.

"They all agreed..."

The Guardian nodded.

"No one was forced."

"It was our choice."

---

Lucien looked toward him.

"So the Kingdom vanished..."

"...to protect the future?"

The Guardian smiled sadly.

"Yes."

"But history forgot why."

---

At that moment...

A violent tremor shook the sanctuary.

The White Tree's silver leaves began falling.

The crystal river rippled violently.

Arcturus rushed into the chamber.

His face, normally calm, was filled with alarm.

"My Guardian!"

"The seal is breaking!"

The Guardian's expression immediately changed.

"So soon..."

---

A loud crack echoed beneath the sanctuary.

The ground split open.

Golden light burst upward.

Not from the White Tree.

From beneath its roots.

The old gardener whispered,

"It found us..."

---

From the glowing fissure rose a magnificent stone pedestal.

Resting upon it...

Was an ancient silver crown.

Unlike every other crown they had seen...

It wasn't beautiful because of jewels.

It was beautiful because it was simple.

Six tiny stars circled its rim.

At its center...

A single empty space waited.

The Guardian stared at it.

"I hoped..."

"...none of you would ever see this."

Eva looked at the empty space.

"What's missing?"

The Guardian answered quietly.

"The final Promise."

---

Before anyone could ask another question...

The ancient crown cracked.

A piece broke away.

Instead of falling...

It floated into the air.

Dark mist poured from the fracture.

A chilling voice echoed through the sanctuary.

"At last..."

"...the Crown remembers me."

Every light in the sanctuary dimmed.

The White Tree trembled.

Even the First Guardian slowly turned toward the darkness.

For the first time...

Fear appeared in his eyes.

He whispered only one name.

"Caelus..."

The name echoed through the sanctuary.

The Six Heirs looked at one another.

None of them had ever heard it before.

Yet somehow...

Every one of them knew.

The true story of the First Kingdom...

Had finally begun.
