BOOK TWO: THE KINGDOM BEYOND THE GATE
Chapter 28: The Battle Beyond the Gates
The stars became the battlefield.
The Hall of Choices dissolved into countless fragments of light, scattering across the universe like shattered glass. Around the Six Heirs floated hundreds of ancient Gates—some whole, some broken, some forgotten for thousands of years.
Below them lay entire worlds.
Millions of people looked toward the heavens.
None of them understood what they were seeing.
But every one of them felt the same thing.
Hope... and fear.
The Last War had begun.
---
The Devourer floated silently in the darkness.
The crack in its black armor glowed with silver light where Lucien's Blade of Dawn had struck.
It slowly touched the crack with one hand.
Instead of healing...
The crack spread.
The Devourer smiled.
"So..."
"The Heart has finally awakened."
---
Without warning, it raised the Spear of Oblivion.
One swing split the battlefield.
A black wave raced toward the nearest Gate.
Everyone watched in horror as the Gate began disappearing—not breaking, but being erased from existence.
"NO!"
Eva cried.
She lifted the Celestial Globe.
Ancient symbols burst from its surface, surrounding the dying Gate.
The Gate stopped fading.
Instead, it transformed into pure light and disappeared into the Globe.
Eva smiled through tears.
"I can't save the Gate..."
"But I can preserve its memory."
Eryndor nodded proudly.
"As long as its memory survives, it can be rebuilt."
---
The Devourer attacked again.
This time, thousands of black spears rained from the sky like meteors.
Parna slammed her hands together.
The forests of every connected world answered her call.
Gigantic silver trees rose through the Gates themselves.
Their branches spread across the battlefield, shielding countless kingdoms from destruction.
Flowers bloomed in the middle of the war.
The Devourer watched silently.
"You protect life."
Parna answered firmly,
"Because life protected me first."
---
A violent explosion echoed behind them.
One of the floating Gates shattered.
Dark creatures poured out.
Not soldiers.
Not monsters.
They were Forgotten Ones—people whose names had been erased by time.
They had no faces.
Only empty silhouettes searching desperately for memories that no longer existed.
Lyra gasped.
"They're not evil!"
"They're lost!"
Aarvi lowered her staff.
"Then we don't fight them."
She planted the Staff of Home into the battlefield.
A warm silver light spread outward.
Instead of attacking...
The Forgotten Ones stopped.
One by one, they began remembering.
A mother remembered her daughter.
A Guardian remembered his oath.
A child remembered her own name.
Smiles slowly appeared.
Their forms transformed into stars and drifted peacefully into the sky.
The battlefield became quieter.
The Devourer watched in silence.
"You choose mercy..."
Aarvi smiled.
"My uncle taught me that home isn't a place."
"It's the people who remember you."
---
Meanwhile...
Lucien and Orion fought side by side.
The Devourer summoned enormous blades of darkness from the void.
Orion blocked each strike with his Shield of Light.
Lucien countered with the Blade of Dawn.
Silver and black clashed again and again.
Every collision created new constellations across the heavens.
Finally...
Lucien leaped forward.
With all his strength, he struck the crack in the Devourer's armor.
CRACK!
The armor split further.
For a brief second...
Everyone saw what lay beneath.
Not darkness.
Not a monster.
A human heart made of light.
Lucien froze.
"So..."
"You're alive."
The Devourer quickly covered the crack.
But it was too late.
The Six Heirs had seen the truth.
---
Riva stared at the enemy.
"You're not trying to destroy the worlds..."
The Devourer remained silent.
She continued.
"You're trying to protect something."
For the first time...
The Devourer hesitated.
---
Before anyone could speak further—
The sky trembled violently.
A new Gate appeared above the battlefield.
Unlike the others, it was neither silver nor black.
It shimmered with every color imaginable.
Elyon looked up in shock.
"The Gate of Unity..."
Eryndor whispered,
"It hasn't opened since the Age of Promises."
---
The six fragments of the Heart began resonating.
Riva's pendant.
Lucien's Blade.
Eva's Globe.
Parna's vines.
Aarvi's Staff.
Orion's Shield.
Each released a beam of light.
The beams merged inside the new Gate.
A voice echoed across every world.
"Only together may the Promise be fulfilled."
The Gate slowly opened.
Inside was not another kingdom.
Not another battlefield.
It revealed a vast field beneath an eternal sunrise.
In the center stood a round stone table with six empty seats.
No throne.
No crown.
Only equals.
Riva smiled.
"It was never about one ruler."
Lucien nodded.
"It was always about all of us."
---
Suddenly...
Queen Riva and Future Lucien stepped forward.
Their bodies had begun fading into light.
Queen Riva looked at her younger self.
"Our future is changing."
Future Lucien smiled.
"And that's a good sign."
Aarvi ran toward them.
"You're disappearing?"
Queen Riva nodded gently.
"The future we came from no longer exists."
She hugged Riva tightly.
"Don't become me."
Riva held her hand.
"I won't."
Future Lucien looked at the younger Lucien.
"Live a life you won't regret."
Then he placed his old pocket watch into Lucien's hand.
"It's yours now."
Both future travelers smiled one last time.
Their bodies dissolved into countless silver stars.
The stars drifted into the Gate of Unity and vanished.
Their timeline had finally found peace.
---
The Devourer watched everything.
Then, for the first time in thousands of years...
It lowered the Spear of Oblivion.
Its voice was no longer cold.
It sounded... tired.
"So..."
"The cycle can change."
Riva stepped forward.
"It already has."
The Devourer slowly removed its black helmet.
The Six Heirs stared in stunned silence.
The face beneath was completely ordinary.
A man with kind, weary eyes.
No scars.
No hatred.
Only endless exhaustion.
He looked at Riva and whispered,
"I've waited... for someone to prove me wrong."
Before anyone could ask what he meant—
A violent pulse erupted from the distant Ninth Gate.
The universe shook.
Even the Devourer turned toward it.
Elyon's expression changed instantly.
"No..."
"Something has crossed the Ninth Gate."
Eryndor's voice became grave.
"The war we prepared for..."
"...was never the true final battle."
Beyond the Ninth Gate, a silhouette began walking toward them.
Not with darkness.
Not with light.
But with an ancient power that neither the Keepers nor the Devourer recognized.
The figure stopped just beyond the Gate.
Then smiled.
"At last..."
"You've opened the way."
