Chapter 61 - chapter 29

BOOK TWO: THE KINGDOM BEYOND THE GATE

Chapter 29: The Promise of Six

Silence spread across the battlefield.

The mysterious figure stood beyond the Ninth Gate.

No darkness surrounded them.

No divine light radiated from their body.

Instead...

Reality itself seemed to bend around them.

The stars stopped moving.

The Gates became completely still.

Even time hesitated.

For the first time since the beginning of the Last War...

The Devourer looked afraid.

---

The stranger slowly walked through the Ninth Gate.

Every step caused ancient symbols to appear beneath their feet.

Not symbols of war.

Not symbols of power.

Symbols of promises.

Elyon whispered,

"It can't be..."

Eryndor lowered his head.

"So... the last Promise still lives."

---

Riva stepped forward.

"Who are you?"

The stranger smiled warmly.

"My name no longer matters."

"I am simply..."

"...the First Keeper of the Promise."

Everyone fell silent.

Even Lyra looked shocked.

"I thought you disappeared before the First Kingdom was created."

The Keeper nodded.

"History believed that."

"History was mistaken."

---

The Devourer tightened its grip on the Spear of Oblivion.

"You should have remained beyond the Ninth Gate."

The Keeper looked at him with sadness.

"My old friend..."

"You've carried this burden long enough."

The Six Heirs exchanged confused glances.

Old friend?

Riva looked toward the Devourer.

"You know him?"

The Devourer closed its eyes.

For several moments...

No one spoke.

Finally...

"I was never his enemy."

---

Shock spread through the battlefield.

Lucien lowered the Blade of Dawn.

"What?"

The Devourer looked toward the countless worlds floating around them.

"I was created to erase worlds that had already died."

"To prevent forgotten kingdoms from becoming prisons of endless suffering."

Eva frowned.

"Then why attack us?"

"I didn't."

The Devourer answered quietly.

"I tested you."

"If the Heirs couldn't stand together..."

"They could never protect what was coming."

---

Everyone looked toward the mysterious Keeper.

The Keeper nodded.

"He speaks the truth."

"The Devourer is not the creator of this war."

"He is its last guardian."

Silence filled the battlefield.

Everything they believed was beginning to change.

---

Aarvi folded her arms.

"So..."

"We've been fighting the wrong person?"

The Devourer smiled bitterly.

"You were fighting fear."

"Not me."

---

Suddenly—

The Ninth Gate trembled violently.

A deafening roar echoed from within.

Not one voice.

Millions.

Ancient cities.

Forgotten civilizations.

Broken promises.

Every memory that had been sealed beyond the Ninth Gate began pushing against reality.

The Keeper's smile disappeared.

"It's beginning."

---

The sky above every world cracked.

Through the fractures, everyone could see another universe.

A place without stars.

Without Gates.

Without hope.

The Keeper looked at the Six Heirs.

"Long before the First Kingdom..."

"There was another civilization."

"They discovered something no one should ever find."

Riva immediately interrupted.

"The disappearance of the First Kingdom?"

The Keeper shook his head.

"No."

"That story belongs to another day."

"The truth beyond the Ninth Gate is even older."

---

Elyon stepped beside the Keeper.

"Our duty ends here."

Eryndor nodded.

"The rest belongs to the Six Heirs."

---

The Six fragments of the Heart suddenly left their owners.

They floated together above the battlefield.

The fragments merged into a brilliant silver star.

Not a weapon.

Not a crown.

A symbol.

The Symbol of the Covenant.

Ancient words echoed across every Gate.

"Six Hearts."

"One Promise."

The symbol divided once more.

Returning to each Heir.

Their powers synchronized completely.

For the first time...

They could hear each other's thoughts.

Not private memories.

Only trust.

Only courage.

Only hope.

No fear remained between them.

---

The Devourer planted the Spear of Oblivion into the battlefield.

"I cannot cross the Ninth Gate."

"But you can."

Lucien looked toward him.

"Will you fight beside us?"

The Devourer smiled.

"No."

"My task is different."

He raised both hands.

Darkness spread around every remaining Gate.

Instead of destroying them...

It protected them.

The Spear transformed into countless black chains that wrapped around the Gates.

The Keeper nodded approvingly.

"The Gates will remain stable."

"But only for a little while."

---

Suddenly...

The mysterious figure beyond the Ninth Gate took another step.

This time everyone saw only a silhouette.

No face.

No voice.

Just overwhelming presence.

The battlefield shook.

Even the Keepers couldn't identify it.

The Devourer whispered,

"It has awakened..."

---

The Keeper turned toward the Six Heirs.

"You have one final choice."

Riva nodded.

"We know."

"We choose together."

The Keeper smiled.

"No."

"This choice is different."

He pointed toward the Ninth Gate.

"You may close it forever..."

"...or leave it open."

Eva immediately understood.

"If we close it..."

"The danger ends."

The Keeper nodded.

"But every truth beyond it..."

"...will remain hidden forever."

Parna spoke softly.

"And if we leave it open?"

Eryndor answered.

"The path to the truth will remain."

"But so will the danger."

---

Silence.

The Six Heirs looked at one another.

Lucien remembered his father's words.

Eva remembered her grandmother's compass.

Parna remembered the whispering forest.

Aarvi remembered her uncle's final smile.

Orion remembered every battle.

Riva remembered Adrian's last lesson.

Trust each other.

She smiled.

Then looked at her friends.

"What do we choose?"

Lucien answered first.

"We don't fear the truth."

Eva nodded.

"Mysteries exist to be understood."

Parna smiled.

"Nature grows toward the unknown."

Aarvi laughed.

"If we close every door..."

"Who'll have adventures?"

Even Orion smiled.

"Our journey isn't over."

Together...

The Six Heirs raised their hands.

The Covenant of Six shone brighter than every star.

The Ninth Gate slowly responded.

Not by closing.

Not by opening wider.

It stabilized.

Neither sealed.

Nor free.

Balanced.

The Keeper smiled proudly.

"You chose the path no one before you dared to choose."

The Devourer looked at the Six Heirs one last time.

"You've ended my watch."

His body slowly dissolved into silver and black light.

Before disappearing completely, he spoke his final words.

"Protect the Promise..."

"...until we meet again."

His light flowed into the stars.

The darkness surrounding the Gates vanished.

Peace slowly returned across the worlds.

But the Ninth Gate remained.

Waiting.

Watching.

Calling.

And deep within its endless light...

A single pair of ancient eyes slowly opened.

A quiet voice echoed from beyond.

"The First Kingdom was only the beginning."
