Chapter 39 - Volume 2: Chapter 3 — The First Crack

The competition had officially begun.

For three days, both groups worked relentlessly.

Marcus's team moved quickly, producing ideas faster than anyone expected. Every afternoon, new drafts appeared. New plans. New revisions.

They weren't afraid to change direction.

They weren't afraid to fail.

And that made them dangerous.

Lucien's group was different.

Every decision was carefully examined before it was accepted.

Every proposal was tested.

Every weakness was questioned.

The process was slower.

But stronger.

At least, that was the plan.

The problem appeared on Thursday.

A small problem.

The kind that seemed harmless at first.

"We have an issue."

The words came from one of Lucien's team members.

The room immediately quieted.

Lucien looked up from his notes.

"What kind of issue?"

The student swallowed.

"The research data."

A pause.

"Some of it doesn't match."

Silence.

Eli frowned.

"What do you mean it doesn't match?"

"The figures from two sources are completely different."

The student placed the papers on the desk.

"If we use the wrong information, our entire proposal could be challenged."

For the first time all week, uncertainty entered the room.

Several students exchanged nervous looks.

Their project depended on accuracy.

Without it, everything weakened.

Lucien studied the documents carefully.

His expression remained calm.

But his mind was already calculating.

The deadline was close.

Too close.

"Can we replace the data?" someone asked.

"Not in time," another replied.

"What if we simplify the proposal?"

"We'll lose our strongest argument."

The discussion grew louder.

More anxious.

More divided.

Lucien stood.

Immediately, the room fell silent.

"We're not panicking."

His voice was steady.

Controlled.

Certain.

The students stopped talking.

"We verify every source tonight."

Lucien continued.

"We correct every mistake."

He looked around the room.

"And tomorrow we move forward."

A student hesitated.

"What if we're too late?"

Lucien met their gaze.

"Then we'll work faster."

The confidence in his voice settled the room.

Not completely.

But enough.

Across the classroom, Marcus's group seemed unaffected.

They were laughing.

Talking.

Moving forward.

Eli watched them carefully.

"They look pretty relaxed."

Lucien glanced over.

"They haven't found their problem yet."

Eli blinked.

"You think they have one?"

Lucien closed the folder.

"Everyone does."

Later that evening, the class group chat exploded with messages.

Rumors.

Predictions.

Opinions.

Some students believed Marcus's team was already ahead.

Others weren't so sure.

For the first time since the split, doubt began spreading through both groups.

Not because someone had failed.

Because everyone realized something important.

This competition wasn't about who started strongest.

It was about who survived the pressure.

As Lucien left the classroom that evening, he glanced back once.

The desks.

The notes.

The unfinished work.

The first crack had appeared.

The question now was simple.

Would it break the foundation—

Or make it stronger?
