Chapter 40 - Volume 2: Chapter 4 — Under Pressure

The competition changed everything.

What had once been a classroom divided by opinions was now divided by results.

Every day mattered.

Every mistake mattered.

And everyone knew it.

Monday morning arrived with an unusual silence.

Students entered the classroom carrying notebooks, folders, and unfinished ideas.

The deadline for the school selection was only a week away.

No one could afford to relax.

Lucien stood beside the whiteboard, reviewing his group's progress.

The data issue from last week had been solved, but new problems had appeared.

A proposal was only as strong as the people presenting it.

And lately, his group had begun showing cracks.

"We're behind."

The words came from one of the students.

Several others nodded.

Lucien looked around the room.

"Behind in what?"

"Progress."

"Presentation materials."

"Preparation."

The concerns came one after another.

The pressure was getting to them.

Lucien remained calm.

"We are not behind."

A few students exchanged uncertain looks.

"We are building something complete," he continued. "Rushing now will create mistakes later."

"But what if Marcus's group finishes first?" another student asked.

The room grew quiet.

Everyone was thinking the same thing.

Lucien folded his arms.

"Finishing first and finishing best are not the same thing."

His confidence steadied the room.

But not completely.

Doubt still lingered.

Across the classroom, Marcus's team seemed full of energy.

Their discussions were louder.

Their ideas moved faster.

Their confidence was growing.

Marcus stood in front of his group with a grin.

"We're close."

Excited murmurs followed.

"If we keep this pace," Marcus continued, "we'll have a complete proposal by Friday."

The group erupted with enthusiasm.

For the first time, they felt ahead.

But Marcus wasn't smiling because of that.

He was smiling because he knew confidence could be dangerous.

Too much of it often led to mistakes.

That afternoon, the teacher made an announcement.

"Both groups will give a progress presentation tomorrow."

The room froze.

"A presentation?" someone repeated.

The teacher nodded.

"I want to see how each team is developing before the final evaluation."

Suddenly, tomorrow became important.

Very important.

Students immediately began preparing.

Notes were reviewed.

Slides were updated.

Arguments were practiced.

Pressure filled the classroom.

Eli dropped into his seat beside Lucien.

"This is happening sooner than I expected."

Lucien nodded.

"Good."

Eli blinked.

"Good?"

Lucien closed his notebook.

"The sooner we face pressure, the sooner we discover weaknesses."

Across the room, Marcus overheard.

A faint smile appeared on his face.

"Then tomorrow should be interesting," Marcus said.

For a brief moment, the classroom fell silent.

Lucien met Marcus's gaze.

"It will be."

Neither looked away.

Neither backed down.

Tomorrow wasn't the final battle.

But it would reveal something important.

Which group was truly prepared.

And which group was only pretending to be.

As the final bell rang, students left carrying more than books.

They carried expectations.

Pressure.

And the growing fear of failure.

Because the closer they got to the finish line—

The harder it became to hide their weaknesses.
