Adaptation was never reactive.
It was selective.
The environment didn't push again.
That was the first sign.
Pressure paused not because it had failed, but because it was changing shape.
"They're not applying force," Adrian said, scanning the incoming summaries. "They're observing."
"Yes," I replied. "Adaptation always begins with silence."
Silence gave space.
Space allowed strategy.
The first adjustment came from outside the system.
A familiar partner changed representatives same company, different voice. The language shifted subtly. Less probing. More framing.
"They're sending someone who listens," Adrian said.
"Yes," I replied. "Because they're done testing strength. Now they're studying behavior."
Behavior was harder to fake.
Internally, I noticed the mirror effect almost immediately.
People adjusted tone. Meetings shortened. Questions sharpened not out of fear, but calculation.
"They're anticipating," Adrian said.
