The request that arrived mid-morning was reasonable.

That was how I knew it wasn't.

It mirrored our language. Referenced our cadence. Acknowledged our recent adjustments without naming them. The sender framed it as cooperation, not convergence.

"They've learned how we speak," Adrian said, reading over my shoulder.

"Yes," I replied. "Which means it's time we change what we teach."

Counter-adaptation wasn't opposition.

It was authorship.

I accepted the request.

Not fully.

Selectively.

A narrower scope. A revised objective. Timelines aligned to our rhythm, not theirs.

"They'll read this as flexibility," Adrian said.

"Yes," I replied. "Flexibility invites assumptions."

Assumptions were leverage.

Internally, I changed nothing visible.

No new directives.

No announcements.

I adjusted sequencing.
