Aftershock didn't announce itself.

It followed.

The first aftershock appeared in behavior, not systems.

People hesitated not from fear, but recalibration. They moved carefully through spaces that had recently shifted, testing weight, measuring balance, confirming what would hold.

"They're adjusting to absence," Adrian said as we walked through the floor.

"Yes," I replied. "Aftershock always follows removal."

Removal wasn't dramatic.

It was subtractive.

Something that had once demanded attention no longer did. And that absence left a vacuum not of power, but of habit.

People reached for cues that no longer existed.

Then stopped.

Conversations changed.

Not in content.

In cadence.

Pauses lengthened. Responses slowed. People waited a beat longer before speaking, as if confirming the ground beneath their words.

"They're re-learning timing," Adrian said.

"Yes," I replied. "Aftershock disrupts rhythm before it restores it."

The disruption surfaced in subtle ways.
