"Just me."
Zoe Ellsworth said, "I close up late. The shop doesn't close until eight, so I can't make it."
Jean Grant held her phone and said pleadingly, "Please, just come keep me company, Zoe. Honestly, if it weren't for your brother and sister-in-law, we'd be great friends. Can't you forgive me? Wouldn't it be nice if we could be like we used to be?"
Zoe Ellsworth was a little moved, but she still said, "I'll see. If I can close up early, I'll go."
Jean Grant put down the phone. Lying on the sofa all by herself was just too boring.
Three hours later, Zoe Ellsworth arrived.
"I didn't think you'd still be here." She closed the door.
Jean Grant sat up. "I have nowhere to go. I was bored at home, and I'm sick of shopping."
Zoe Ellsworth sized her up. "You look well. Your husband should be off work by now, isn't he with you?"
Jean Grant smiled. "He has a business dinner tonight. You know how it is with men—always discussing important matters."
"That's true."
