Chapter 17 - A Battle Against Skill

The cracked volcanic armor kept falling away in pieces, clattering across the ruined arena floor, and beneath it Grimgold's body was already changing.

The heavy plating reformed into something lighter, closer to a second skin than armor at all, exposing more of a frame that seemed, impossibly, to have grown even larger despite losing so much bulk. Glowing markings spread across both arms and his chest, tracing lines of dull orange light that pulsed in time with something Azraeth couldn't name, something that felt less like decoration and more like a heartbeat given visible form. His massive iron gauntlets cracked apart entirely and reformed smaller, sleeker, shaped for speed and precision rather than raw crushing weight.

And the wounds — the cracked hide, the fractures Azraeth had spent the entire first battle carving open, the scorched ruin the Supernova had left across his frame moments earlier — simply weren't there anymore. Not healed. Erased, as completely as if the entire first battle had never touched him at all.

Grimgold rose to his feet, and the difference was immediate, visible in the way he moved rather than merely stood — loose, coiled, nothing left of the deliberate, measured boxer from moments before.

He closed the distance before Azraeth could fully brace, and the first strike arrived faster than anything from the entire previous fight — a rapid jab that Azraeth barely deflected, only for Grimgold's other hand to trap his forearm mid-block and drive a knee into his ribs before he could pull free. Azraeth staggered back, gasping, and Grimgold was already there again, chaining a combination too fast to read individually, each strike flowing directly into the next without a single wasted motion.

Fire Protection flared to absorb what he couldn't avoid, but even the shield strained under the sheer rate of impact, three strikes landing in the time it had taken to block one moments earlier. Azraeth teleported clear of a fourth, reappearing a body's length away — and Grimgold was already closing that distance again before he'd finished reorienting, hand trapping his wrist a second time and using the grip to redirect a punch he'd thought was already dodged. A follow-up elbow caught him across the temple hard enough to blur his vision entirely, and he barely rolled clear of the finishing knee that would have ended the exchange outright.

Grimgold pressed without pause, feinting a hook before switching mid-motion into a trap Azraeth hadn't seen coming, catching his other arm and using the combined grip to pull him directly into a rising knee. Heat Sense screamed the warning a half-second too late to fully avoid it, and Azraeth twisted just enough to take the blow on his hip rather than his ribs, still hard enough to drive the air from his lungs entirely.

He barely regained his footing before Grimgold closed again, a low sweep aimed at his ankle forcing an awkward hop that left him off-balance for the follow-up cross. Azraeth caught it on a raised shoulder rather than his jaw, the impact still spinning him half around, and Grimgold's hand shot out to trap the opening his own momentum had created. Azraeth teleported a half-second before the grip closed, reappearing several strides clear, chest heaving.

Indigo Colored Fire — Lava Heal

A shallow gash along his cheek sealed shut mid-breath, and he barely had time to register the relief before Grimgold arrived again, closing the distance in a blur of chained jabs that forced him into pure retreat, guard raised, absorbing what he couldn't avoid and giving ground he knew he couldn't keep giving forever.

---

Slowly, through sheer necessity, Azraeth began to read it.

Foresight sharpened first — not predicting single strikes anymore, but the shape of entire combinations, the half-second commitment before Grimgold's trapping hand reached for a limb rather than a target. Heat Sense mapped the rhythm of his approach, the subtle redistribution of weight before every redirection. Azraeth stopped trying to out-speed him entirely and started reading the pattern instead.

The next trap came for his wrist; Azraeth let it close, then used the grip itself, pivoting into Grimgold's own extended arm rather than away from it, driving a burning elbow into an exposed rib before the giant could disengage. Grimgold answered instantly, adapting on the spot, redirecting his stance to close the new opening before Azraeth could exploit it twice — but the exchange had changed. For the first time in the second phase, Azraeth had landed something that mattered.

Fire Booster carried him through the next flurry rather than around it, matching pace directly, weaving counters into gaps that existed for less than a heartbeat. A hook clipped his jaw hard enough to spin him halfway around; he used the rotation, completing the turn into a spinning kick that forced Grimgold to actually retreat a full step rather than simply absorb it. Grimgold answered with a lightning combination of his own, three strikes chained in rapid succession, and Azraeth caught the first two on raised forearms before slipping the third entirely, close enough that he felt the wind of it against his cheek.

Something like respect flickered across the giant's markings-lit face.

Grimgold shifted his approach again, abandoning the trap-heavy pressure for something faster and more direct, a flurry of jabs meant to overwhelm through sheer volume rather than precision. Azraeth weathered the first three on a raised guard, felt the fourth slip through to graze his ribs, and answered immediately with a burning knee that finally forced a genuine retreat rather than a mere step back. He pressed the advantage, chaining elbow into hook into a spinning heel that Grimgold barely ducked beneath, the giant's own countering uppercut arriving a half-second later than it should have.

Indigo Colored Fire — Stellar Pull

He loosed the compressed form at close range rather than the sphere's usual long throw, a blinding sliver of stellar energy tearing past Grimgold's guard before the giant could fully track it, scoring a deep line across his shoulder that finally drew something like a genuine wince. Grimgold answered with renewed aggression, forcing Azraeth back through a combination sharp enough that only Foresight's half-second warning kept every strike from landing clean.

---

The battle found its true rhythm from there — both of them adapting in real time, neither dominating for more than a handful of exchanges before the other adjusted. Azraeth wove Teleport directly into his combinations now, vanishing mid-strike and reappearing already committed to the next angle, forcing Grimgold to defend openings that shouldn't have existed a heartbeat earlier. A trap aimed for his forearm found empty air as he teleported through it entirely, reappearing already mid-strike against the giant's exposed flank, and Grimgold's answering counter came a fraction slower than it should have, still adjusting to a rhythm that no longer played fair.

Grimgold answered by changing levels entirely, dropping low into a sweeping leg strike meant to take Azraeth's footing out from under him. Azraeth leapt it rather than blocked, using Fire Booster to carry the jump higher and further than his own legs alone could manage, and came down with a burning heel drop that Grimgold rolled clear of at the last possible instant, the impact cratering stone where the giant's head had been a heartbeat earlier.

Indigo Colored Fire — Stellar Pull

He gathered the ultimate not as a finishing blow but as a tool, expanding it into its full, colossal form rather than the compressed sphere — a gas giant blooming above the ruined arena, gravity bending inward across the entire battlefield at once. Grimgold's footing faltered against the pull for the first time all fight, forced to fight the very ground beneath him as debris and broken stone streamed past toward the star's burning center. Azraeth used the opening ruthlessly, closing the distance while the giant fought his own stolen balance, driving a combination of burning strikes into openings that pure speed alone could never have earned him.

Grimgold tore free through raw strength, staggering clear of the star's pull with visible effort, and answered with a counter combination faster than anything before it — Azraeth caught the first two on raised forearms, Heat Thickness dulling the worst of the impact, and slipped the third entirely before driving a burning knee up through the giant's guard. Grimgold retaliated with a trap-and-strike combination that nearly caught him flat-footed, his wrist seized mid-motion before he wrenched free with a burst of Fire Booster, the escape costing him skin but buying enough distance to reset.

Grimgold changed rhythm again, alternating between rapid, feather-light jabs meant to wear down his guard and sudden, crushing hooks meant to punish any hesitation in between. Azraeth met the pattern with one of his own, slipping the light strikes entirely while meeting the heavy ones with Fire Protection, the shield flaring bright each time a hook connected. A gap finally opened between one combination and the next — Azraeth seized it, chaining a burning uppercut into a spinning elbow that staggered the giant backward two full steps, the most ground Grimgold had given since the second phase began.

A stray counter caught Azraeth's shoulder hard enough to nearly dislocate it; he pressed a burning palm to the joint without breaking stance.

Indigo Colored Fire — Lava Heal

The joint reset itself beneath the flame's touch, and he re-engaged immediately, unwilling to let Grimgold reclaim the momentum he'd only just wrestled away.

The arena had become almost unrecognizable, craters overlapping craters, molten cracks spreading wide beneath their combined violence, dust and ash thick enough to blur the edges of every exchange. Azraeth felt exhaustion settling bone-deep, but so had certainty — Grimgold was breathing harder now too, the first sign of real strain the second phase had shown.

Indigo Colored Fire — Mud Lava

He spread unstable ground beneath Grimgold's next advance, buying the half-second he needed, and fell back three full strides.

Indigo Colored Fire — Supernova

Violet-blue light gathered between his palms, compressing tighter with every passing heartbeat. Grimgold tore free of the mud immediately, closing the distance with everything his new speed could offer, and Azraeth held the charge steady through Fire Protection absorbing the first crushing strike, teleporting half a step clear of the second without ever releasing what he'd built. Grimgold adjusted mid-charge, feinting low before driving a genuine strike meant to end the compression outright — Foresight caught it a fraction early, and Azraeth let the blow graze past rather than meet it, refusing to let the interruption succeed. A third strike came faster than either of the first two, hand trapping toward his wrist in an attempt to physically disrupt the gathering energy itself; Azraeth teleported clear an instant before the grip could close, reappearing with the compression still intact and denser than before.

Grimgold, sensing the charge nearing completion, abandoned technique entirely for one final, desperate lunge — raw speed and mass thrown into a single strike meant to end everything before the light could finish gathering.

The charge completed a heartbeat before it could land.

Light tore outward in a single devastating burst, catching the giant at point-blank range and driving him backward through the last standing pillar in the arena, ancient stone finally giving way entirely beneath the combined violence. Grimgold crashed to the ruined floor and did not rise.

Silence fell, absolute and heavy, broken only by settling dust and the faint groan of stone still shifting somewhere in the wreckage.

Azraeth lowered his guard, chest heaving, staring at the motionless giant amid a battlefield that no longer resembled an arena at all — craters bleeding into craters, the last of the ancient pillars reduced to rubble, molten cracks glowing faintly beneath a haze of drifting ash. For a long moment, he allowed himself to believe it was finally over.

Then the last of Grimgold's armor simply dissolved away, crumbling to fine ash rather than shattering, as though it had never truly been solid to begin with.

Beneath it, his body was already changing again — golden-black markings spreading across every inch of exposed skin, ancient and countless, each one tracing some story Azraeth couldn't read, every mark a testament to a battle survived, an opponent outlasted, an existence that refused to end simply because it had been struck down. The markings pulsed faintly in the settling dark, patient, as though counting down toward something Azraeth had no way of preparing for.

Azraeth stared, disbelief settling cold beneath the exhaustion already wearing through every limb.

"Are you kidding me?"
