Chapter 69 - Chapter 69: Expendable

Xue Feng's gaze came down from the window.

The wounded demonic cultivator broke for the alley.

He moved badly. His shoulder hung wrong, the wrist ruined, blood marking every step.

Wang Ben felt the qi pressure around the cultivator dropping with every breath. He had been pushed past his real cultivation by whatever demonic technique he had used to break the door above, and the push was unwinding now.

The pressure slid back through where it should have stopped and kept slipping. By the time it caught and steadied, the cultivator's edge was gone.

What remained was still above Zhao Yu. The gap had narrowed. It had not closed.

The cultivator knew it. That was why he was running.

He had decided in the breath the bell rang. It was not worth his life to keep Xue Feng's master happy. He would rather take his chances on his own.

He swung once at Zhao Yu, a wide sweep of corrupted qi that Zhao Yu read and slipped under, then used the gap to vanish into the alley.

Zhao Yu went after him.

[OBSERVATION: Demonic technique dissipated. Hostile cultivation reduced from qi condensation stage 9 to qi condensation stage 7.]

Wang Ben did not need the System to tell him. He could feel the gap. The pressure was falling, but it was still falling from above.

Xue Feng came forward.

He did not run. He walked, because walking was an insult, because Wang Ben was alone now and Xue Feng wanted the moment to last. Black lines crawled beneath his skin in slow, deliberate pulses, the way a man flexed a hand to remind himself he could. The demonic qi rolling off him pressed against Wang Ben's chest like a flat hand laid against the sternum.

"Wang Ben." Xue Feng's smile was a broken thing. "I have been waiting a long time for this."

Wang Ben said nothing. He shifted half a pace toward the clinic stairs. Whatever happened next would happen on this side of the doorway.

Xue Feng came at him.

The first exchange almost ended it. Wang Ben had been holding his sword arm angled to cover the numb left side, and Xue Feng went for the seam without hesitation. The strike came in faster than anything the three corrupted cultivators had thrown at him, late-stage qi condensation shoved past every limit it should have respected, and Wang Ben answered it with a deflection that bought him a heartbeat and nothing more. The second exchange opened a new cut along his forearm. The third drove him back two paces toward the stairs.

Xue Feng laughed. The sound was wet now, ragged at the edges.

"Are you ready to die, Wang Ben?" His blade traced a slow figure in the air between them.

Wang Ben kept his footing. He did not answer. He had a sword and a numb arm and a window above him that the man in front of him had not yet stopped looking at. That was the whole world.

A blur at the edge of his vision. Zhao Yu, coming back at full run.

The half-step foundation establishment cultivator was gone. Zhao Yu had broken off the chase.

Xue Feng's smile faltered when Zhao Yu reached the street.

His pressure was rising. Wang Ben could feel it clearly now, the way he had felt it sitting on the edge of breaking through the night before the bell.

Whatever the threshold was, Zhao Yu had been on it for days, and the run back across the open street with a friend's life on the other end had been enough.

Between one strike and the next, the pressure inside Zhao Yu's body crested, broke, and settled at a higher line. His next blow came faster. The next was faster still.

[OBSERVATION: Zhao Yu has advanced one stage. Battle Soul manifestation triggered the breakthrough.]

Xue Feng felt it too. Wang Ben saw the shift in his eyes, the moment a fight he had been fully ahead of stopped being one he could count on staying ahead of.

The fight turned in three exchanges. Zhao Yu's blade found the angles Xue Feng could not afford to give up. Wang Ben's filled the openings Zhao Yu created. They were not better than him. They did not need to be. Xue Feng was fighting with borrowed power on a body that had not been built to hold it, and two cultivators who did not waste motion were enough to start finding the cracks.

Then Xue Feng staggered.

It was not a wound. Wang Ben saw it and knew it was not a wound. Xue Feng's stance broke for no reason any blade of theirs had given him. He had been pushing his body harder than it was built to take, and the inscriptions on his skin had started taking it back.

The black lines on his skin began to glow.

Not pulse. Glow. They lit from within in a slow, deliberate brightening, the way a brand heated under coals, and Xue Feng's face changed. The hatred did not leave it. Underneath the hatred something else surfaced. Recognition. Something close to fear.

[ALERT: Demonic body inscriptions extracting qi at unsustainable rate. Subject's meridians under direct strain.]

[OBSERVATION: Subject's reaction indicates familiarity. Subject has approached this threshold before.]

Xue Feng pressed his palm flat against the brightest of the lines on his chest. His teeth set. Wang Ben watched the breath go out of him in a long, controlled hiss.

"No," Xue Feng said. He was not speaking to Wang Ben. "No. Not now."

The lines brightened.

Xue Feng's head came up. He was not looking at Wang Ben anymore. He was not looking at anything.

"I am not finished!" The shout tore at his throat, raw, aimed at nothing. "I have him! He is in front of me! I only need..."

The lines brightened again. A thin curl of black smoke lifted from one of them, then from another along his collarbone, and the air around him took on the smell of meat held too close to a fire.

Xue Feng went down to one knee. His sword arm shook. He gathered himself anyway, the rage cresting through the pain, and forced his head up to find Wang Ben again.

"It was never... the revenge." His voice came rough, half-strangled. "He was not giving me power. He was taking. Every time I pushed... every time the hate carried me one more step... he was taking pieces."

A cough tore through him, black blood spattering the stones.

"What would have been left... would not have been me. A vessel. The hate the only thing left in it."

His face changed. The hatred had fallen out of it. What replaced it was the look of a man who had just understood, in the breath he had left, what he had been refining himself into.

"He never wanted my revenge. He wanted what was left when there was no me left to want it."

Black qi cracked through his meridians like lightning following a fault. Xue Feng convulsed once and pitched forward onto his hands.

Wang Ben understood what he was watching.

Wang Ben lowered his sword a fraction. Not in mercy. In the simple recognition that the fight was already over and what was left was something else.

Zhao Yu stopped beside him, blade still up, breath coming hard. Wang Ben put a hand on his arm.

"Wait."

...

Xue Feng got himself onto his back. The street was wet under him in dark, growing patches. Black smoke leaked from the brightest of the marks now, no longer pulsing, just burning him out from the inside in a slow, even rhythm.

"Why?" The word came barely above a whisper. The rage was still there, but it had nowhere to go. "He swore. He told me what to do, and I did it."

Wang Ben kept the sword in his hand. He did not sheathe it. He had no answer that would not have been a guess.

"And you?" A laugh that became a cough. Black blood at the corner of Xue Feng's mouth. "You think this world will not do the same to you? Given time, it does it to everyone."

Wang Ben still did not answer. Either answer would have been wrong.

The marks brightened again, and Xue Feng's back arched against the stones.

[ALERT: Subject entering terminal phase.]

"I had a future." The words came between spasms, each one shallower than the last. "Before your father's failed breakthrough. Before the sabotage. Before my clan decided to..."

A cough tore through him, wet and rattling, and black blood spattered the stones. His breath came in thin, whistling pulls.

"...use it against yours." He forced the words out through his teeth. "I was going to surpass all of you. The strongest of my generation."

The black light pulsed once more and softened. The marks dimmed. For a long breath Wang Ben thought it was over, that whatever had carried Xue Feng this far had finally burned itself out, that he was dying quietly.

Then Xue Feng's eyes opened.

Whatever peace had been there, the hatred underneath it was older. He gathered every scrap of demonic power still burning in his veins, and what should have killed him cleanly fed one last surge instead. He came off the stones in a lunge that had nothing to do with skill, only with want, his fists wreathed in black qi as he threw himself toward the clinic stairs.

If he was going to die, he would take something with him.

Wang Ben moved to intercept. Zhao Yu was faster. That strange awareness that had carried him through the morning put him exactly where he needed to be. His sword met Xue Feng's last strike, and the corrupted qi shattered against an instinct that did not belong to either of their cultivations.

Xue Feng fell.

This time he did not get up.

Wang Ben stood over the body. The marks had stopped glowing. The black qi had gone out of him with the last breath, and what was left on the street was a young man his own age who had been a child at a gathering Wang Ben could not remember.

The empty windows above the medicine halls watched.

The sword was still in his hand. He did not remember tightening his grip on it.

The aftermath came in fragments.

Physician Luo emerged from his clinic, pale and shaking, to tend the wounded.

Li Mei herself was unharmed, but her hands wouldn't stop trembling as she held Wang Chen. When Wang Ben finally climbed the stairs to reach her, she pulled him into an embrace so fierce it made his wounds ache.

"Ben." Her voice broke on his name. "Ben, I thought..."

"I'm fine." He wasn't, but she didn't need to hear that. "You're safe. Wang Chen is safe. That's what matters."

Li Mei looked past him, toward where Xue Feng's body still lay in the street. She did not speak.

"He's dead now." Wang Ben eased back from her embrace. "It's over."

But it wasn't. The demonic cultivators were finished. The watchers who had not been with Xue Feng were not. He could not feel them at this range. He did not need to.

Zhao Yu appeared at the top of the stairs, his sword finally sheathed. His face was pale, and his hands wouldn't stop shaking.

"I don't..." He paused, struggling to find words.

"You don't have to explain it right now." Wang Ben clasped his friend's shoulder, then let go.

Zhao Yu sank down onto the top step and closed his eyes. His hands kept shaking. Wang Ben left him to it.

There were bodies in the street and witnesses gathering at the edges of the scene. City Lord Huo Zhenyang would have questions. The political fallout from open combat in the streets would ripple through Redstone City for weeks.

The City Lord's guards arrived shortly after the fighting was settled to take preliminary statements and secure the scene. The formal inquiry would come later.

The bodies were removed. The street was cleaned. Life slowly returned to normal, merchants reopening their shops and servants resuming their errands.

Wang Ben sat in Physician Luo's receiving room, letting the old man dress his wounds properly. The cuts from earlier were reopening, the healing process disrupted by too much activity too soon.

"You should rest." Luo's voice was gentle but firm. "Your body has limits, young master. Even with healing pills, you need time."

"I know." Wang Ben watched his mother through the doorway. She was sitting with Wang Chen, rocking him gently, her eyes fixed on nothing. The terror hadn't fully left her face. "But rest will have to wait."

The System's clinical summary arrived while the physician worked, as if it had been waiting for the fighting to end before filing its report.

[STATUS: Subject Xue Feng deceased.]

[ANALYSIS: Cascade meridian collapse. Refinement design exceeded survivable extraction threshold. Triggered by subject's overexertion.]

Wang Ben read the words and felt nothing he hadn't already known. The System reduced a life to a cause of death.

Wang Tian came through the door of the receiving room with the Grand Elder a step behind him. The Wang Clan had been in crisis since the moment word reached the compound.

Wang Tian crossed the room. "Are you all right?" he asked.

Wang Ben nodded.

His father did not linger. He turned for the doorway where Li Mei was sitting with Wang Chen and gathered them both against him in a single, quiet hold.

The Grand Elder took the chair beside Wang Ben. "Tell me what happened."

Wang Ben began at the beginning. While he spoke, the Grand Elder gestured to the two Wang guards who had come with them. "See to our men in the upstairs room. Bring them home."
