The morning had descended into the chaos Wang Ben had expected.
Li Mei had been taken back to the compound with Wang Chen still in her arms, the Grand Elder beside her.
The two guards who came with Grand Elder Wang Feng had been sent to the upstairs room to bring the dead clan men down. The City Lord's people had taken what statements they meant to take for now and left the rest for the formal hearing they had already scheduled.
By the time Wang Tian came back outside from the receiving room where Physician Luo had finished dressing Wang Ben's wounds, the bodies were gone from the street and only the dark stain on the stones marked where any of it had happened.
Wang Tian stopped at the foot of the steps and looked at that stain a long moment. His face did not change. His eyes did.
Zhao Yu was still on the top step where Wang Ben had left him, his sword across his knees, hands no longer shaking but no longer doing anything either. He stood when Wang Tian approached, and his bow went deeper than the moment called for.
"Elder Tian..."
"You stood beside my wife and son when I could not." Wang Tian did not let him finish. "The Wang Clan does not forget such service."
He drew a small jade box from his robes. When he opened it, the scent of concentrated spiritual energy passed through the morning air. Inside lay a pill that gleamed pale blue.
"A grade-eight meridian refinement pill. It will help stabilize your cultivation after your breakthrough today and ease the steps to come." Wang Tian set the box in Zhao Yu's hands and closed the younger man's fingers around it before he could refuse. "Your father will hear from me before evening."
Zhao Yu stared at the pill. "Elder Tian, this is too much..."
"It is not enough." Wang Tian's voice softened a fraction. "Li Mei told me what you did."
A different kind of confusion crossed Zhao Yu's face. Not pride.
"I do not know what to say, Elder Tian." His voice dropped. "Everything happened on instinct. I did not really think about it. I just helped Wang Ben where I could."
Wang Tian was quiet a moment. Wang Ben, standing a pace back, kept his face still.
[OBSERVATION: Zhao Yu displaying continued manifestation of suspected Battle Soul capability.]
[CROSS-REFERENCE: Consistent with breakthrough event. Combat performance data confirms.]
"Some cultivators come into instincts the body has not yet earned," Wang Tian said. "It is rare. It is not unheard of."
He did not push further. But Wang Ben saw the calculation in his father's eyes.
"Rest today," he told Zhao Yu. "You have earned it. I will speak with your father later this evening."
Zhao Yu bowed once more and went, still holding the box like he was not sure it was real.
When he was gone, Wang Tian turned to his son.
"Walk with me." He did not wait for an answer, already turning toward the side street.
Wang Tian led him until the street was empty around them, then set a small formation disc against a wall. The faint hum of it shut out the world by a hand's breadth.
"Now," he said. "Tell me what you did not say in front of the others."
Wang Ben let himself breathe out. "He spoke as he was dying, Father. Realizations more than curses. The marks under his skin were not put there to make him stronger. They were refining him into a vessel, slowly, over months. His hatred for us was the source that kept him feeding them. I believe someone was turning him into a puppet. A demonic technique, like the way an inscription master binds a talisman into paper, only here the paper was Xue Feng."
Wang Tian's face did not change. His eyes went cold a different way.
"You read it correctly, Ben." His voice was lower. "The technique has names. Living puppet, while the host breathes. Corpse puppet, if the body outlasts him. Both are old demonic arts."
He paused.
"But the City Lord has Xue Feng's body now. I doubt they will allow the demonic cultivator to continue using him. He will be laid to rest."
Wang Ben walked his father through the rest. The arrival at the clinic with Li Mei. The corrupted qi he had felt before the strike came. The two clan guards holding the upstairs door. The strongest of the demonic cultivators breaking and running for his own life when Xue Feng's marks began to turn. Zhao Yu's breakthrough on the way back. He did not say he had killed Xue Feng. He said the marks had.
Wang Tian was silent a long moment.
When he stirred, it was only to set a hand briefly on his son's shoulder. He deactivated the formation disc and turned back toward the compound.
Wang Ben walked home with him.
...
In the domain capital, other conversations were taking place.
The hidden chamber beneath Crimson Bastion's military compound had no windows. Jade formation lights threw a constant pale blue across the room and leached the color from the faces of the cultivators gathered there. The far wall held a chart of the entire domain. Most of the cultivation marks sat on the western front, stacked dense around Azure Dragon Fortress and the contested ground beyond it. The frontier east of the capital carried fewer marks, scattered across half a dozen border cities. One of them was Redstone.
Commander Tie Yuan stood at the chart with a jade slip in one hand and a personal jade slip on the cord at his belt. His core formation cultivation was carefully restrained. The two junior cultivators waiting at the foot of the chart did not relax for it. He was not loud. They had learned that he did not need to be.
"His Highness first," he said.
The older of the two junior cultivators stepped forward and set a slip on the table.
"Crown Prince Huo Zhanlong continues his progress through the kingdom's domains, Commander. He has spent the last fortnight in Greenstone Domain assessing the muster rolls and the supply roads to the front. He intends to cross into Blackwood Domain within the week. His route runs through three of our border cities before he turns back toward the capital." A small pause. "Redstone is on his route."
Tie Yuan's eyes did not move from the chart. "Then Redstone. Tell me what we know."
The other junior cultivator stepped forward. He was foundation establishment, recently assigned to the eastern outposts, and the silence in the chamber drew a breath out of him before he began.
"Most of what we have is from the clan war, Commander. Months old. The Xue Clan and the Wang Clan had been moving against one another in the city for the better part of a year. Late in the season, the Xue Clan, losing the long fight, made a deal with demonic cultivators."
"Outsiders, then."
"A band of demonic cultivators struck the city, led by three mortal shedding stage seniors. Foundation establishment and core formation cultivators behind them."
Tie Yuan's thumb stopped against the slip.
"Mortal shedding stage cultivators. In Redstone."
"They came in openly and they did not pretend at restraint. The Xue Clan had set them on the Wang and Dao Clans, but demonic cultivators do not honor a bargain the way ordinary mercenaries do. The killing did not stop where the Xue Clan wanted it to. Streets burned, halls leveled, blood spilled across the city. The Xue Clan had not understood what they had invited into the city."
"And the cost."
"Heaviest on the Dao Clan. Their patriarch and grand elder both fell, and the Dao Clan joined the Wang Clan for protection. The Xue Clan was wiped out afterward by the City Lord and the Wang Clan's combined efforts. Of the four major clans the city held a year ago, only those two remain."
"And the Wang Clan held."
"The Wang Clan is known for formations, not for their raw strength. What turned the matter was their alchemist, Wang Tian. He had been crippled in his prime nine years before the war, his meridians damaged, and most had written him off. Somehow he healed himself, and on the back of that work he brought the entire clan's cultivation up a level before the fighting began. A genius, by any honest reading. Now that he is back to his prime, he is one of the domain's rising stars."
"And who took care of the mortal shedding stage demonic cultivators?"
"The City Lord's account credits a loose cultivator, passing through Redstone, with putting down the strongest of the demonic side. The mortal shedding three are dead. The lesser ones are dead or chased out of the city."
"A loose cultivator," Tie Yuan said.
"That is the term in the City Lord's report."
"And our cultivators there."
"That is the difficulty, Commander. The Bastion lost three of our own in that fighting. Among them was Yan Qing, the spear genius who used to send us detailed reports out of Redstone. She was our principal thread, and her work was what kept the city legible to us. What we have had since has come through the City Lord's office directly."
"Yan Qing." Tie Yuan was quiet a moment. "I met her once, years back. A righteous cultivator. Capable beyond what her cultivation suggested."
"Yes, Commander."
"And what does the City Lord say."
"That the matter is closed. That the demonic remnants are accounted for. That order is restored. That there is nothing further at present that requires the Bastion's attention."
"Steady. And soft."
"Yes, Commander. We cannot tell whether he is reporting straight or smoothing the matter for his own reasons. Without our own thread there, we cannot be certain."
Tie Yuan let his eyes pass once more across the chart, then come to rest on Redstone.
"And our presence in the city since."
"Heavier than it should be, Commander. Delegates from the Bastion have been sent to Redstone repeatedly across the past several years, more often than the city's size warrants. Spirit stones have been moved through Bastion ledgers into the local clans. The Xue Clan most prominently, before the war. Lord Cai Hongwen's seal sits on much of that ledger. Since the Xue Clan fell, the same hand has turned against the Wang Clan."
Tie Yuan turned now. He faced the chart fully.
"Cai Hongwen's seal," he said. "On the spirit stone ledger. That much is unsurprising. A noble may pour his wealth where he pleases."
A breath.
"But Lord Cai cannot dispatch Bastion cultivators on his own warrant. By what authority have those delegates been moving."
The cultivator's jaw worked once.
"They come down under his seal, Commander. Domain Lord's authority."
The chamber went still.
Tie Yuan held his face where it was, but his thumb stopped moving against the slip.
Tie Yuan doubted that. Tie Wushan would not waste a free hour on a frontier minor city while a war was burning on the western edge of his own domain. By every voice Tie Yuan had cultivated and trusted in centuries of work, the Domain Lord's eyes had been fixed west for the better part of a year. Azure Dragon had asked for reinforcements twice in the last month. The king was watching Blackwood Domain closely, and the emperor was watching the king's efforts to contain the war in his own kingdom. Tie Wushan would not neglect the war on his western border to busy himself with the politics of a city like Redstone.
Tie Wushan was buying materials by the wagonload to feed the fortresses along the border with the Frozen Jade Kingdom. He was not personally directing the placement of delegates and spirit stones in Redstone.
And yet his name was on the orders.
"Is this Tie Wushan's order," Tie Yuan said quietly, "or on whose command."
The cultivator did not answer. He did not have an answer.
Tie Yuan let it sit a moment longer than the moment wanted to be sat in.
Then he turned back to the chart.
"His Highness's preparations are mine to see to until he reaches Redstone. Bring me the records of every Bastion delegate sent to Redstone in the past five years. Not the summaries that have come up bearing the Domain Lord's seal. The original registers. The ones in the lower archive."
"Understood, Commander."
"Go."
They went.
When the chamber was empty, Tie Yuan stood for a long time looking at the chart. The marks across the eastern frontier. The dense weight of the western front. Redstone, small and unimportant, a single mark among the others.
He untied his personal jade slip. The note he wrote was not for any superior. It was for himself.
Whose hand moves under Tie Wushan's seal.
He sealed the slip, extinguished the formation lights, and left the chamber to its shadows.
...
Morning came cold and bright to Redstone City.
Wang Ben woke to a sealed message waiting outside his door. The City Lord's people had summoned him for the formal hearing the following afternoon. Formal questions about the matter. A show, mostly, but the kind of show that became dangerous if handled poorly.
He dressed and found his father already in the family's main hall, speaking in low tones with Patriarch Wang Tiexin. The old core formation cultivator looked worn, his many centuries showing more clearly than usual.
"The Bastion will make inquiries," the Patriarch was saying as Wang Ben entered. "Or those acting in its name will. Huo Zhenyang cannot refuse either."
"He will not refuse," Wang Tian agreed. "But he can delay. Control what word moves and when. Give us time to find our footing."
"What footing?" Wang Ben asked, drawing both men's attention. "What can we offer that makes them hesitate?"
The Patriarch studied his grandson with ancient eyes. "You have grown, Ben. A season ago, you would not have asked that question."
"A season ago, demonic cultivators were not dying in our streets."
"True." The Patriarch rose, his joints protesting the movement. "What we offer is uncertainty. They do not know who protects us. They do not know why. Until they understand, they will be cautious. Use that caution. Complete your obligations. Strengthen our footing. And hope that by the time they decide to move, we have become too valuable to break."
He departed, leaving Wang Ben alone with his father.
"The array," Wang Tian said, his voice low. "How close are you?"
"Close. The framework is set. I need to bring in the remaining materials and begin the work." He paused, considering whether to say the rest. "The crystal Shen Wuyan's people are bringing will not arrive until spring. But the structural work, the foundation circles, the placement of the nodes, all of that has to be finished and proven before the crystal goes in. If we wait on it, we lose the room to fix what goes wrong."
"Then do not wait." Wang Tian's hand found his shoulder and squeezed once. "Everything else, the watching, the politics, the names we cannot name yet, that is smoke. Focus on your work for Shen Wuyan."
Wang Ben nodded, but as he left the hall, the thought followed him that the wolves of the capital were already circling.
And wolves, he knew, were patient hunters.
They could wait.
