Chapter 68 - Chapter 68: The Final Attack

Five days passed in tense silence.

Wang Ben spent them on the Sanctuary Array. The first of the promised materials had begun to arrive on the second day: a packet of carved jade slips, a sealed crate the day after.

Each delivery gave the System more to work with. It chewed on the new inputs in the background while he sat with the diagrams, slow at this level of functionality, sometimes incomplete. A tolerance he had been guessing at would settle a day later. A sequence he had drawn three ways would narrow to two, then one, with the third sometimes still flagged unresolved.

The work steadied him even when the answers came in fragments. It gave his mind somewhere to be that was not the wall, the gate, the street beyond.

His father had doubled the guard rotations. His mother rarely left the family quarters. Wang Chen reached for the lanterns when she carried him past them, undisturbed by what he could not yet name.

On the sixth morning, Li Mei announced that she needed to visit Physician Luo.

"My cultivation has been... unstable," she said quietly. "The stagnation is worsening. I've been putting off the appointment, but I can't delay any longer."

Wang Ben looked at his mother, seeing the strain that had accumulated over the past weeks. Her qi condensation had been frozen at early-stage for years, but the recent upheaval had disturbed even that fragile balance.

"I'll come with you," Wang Ben said.

Li Mei shook her head. "You don't need to, Ben..."

"I'm coming." His voice left no room for argument. "Wang Chen too?"

Li Mei hesitated, then nodded. "He's due for his monthly assessment. Physician Luo wants to see how he's doing." A faint smile crossed her tired features. "He says Wang Chen shows promise. More than you did at his age, apparently."

Wang Ben let the words sit. A brief pride, and beneath it the cold awareness that taking both his mother and brother outside the compound walls was exactly the vulnerability Xue Feng would exploit.

[THREAT ASSESSMENT: Movement outside compound creates high-risk exposure window. Foundation Establishment escort advised.]

His father was the obvious choice for protection. But Wang Tian had gone to the Alchemists' Guild to consult their archives, hoping to find anything they had on Li Mei's condition. He would not be back before evening. The timing felt wrong. Wang Ben could not say why.

"We'll take the main streets," he said after a pause. "And we'll be back before midday."

The physician's quarter occupied a quiet district near the city's eastern market, where medicine halls and physicians had clustered for generations. The morning traffic was light, merchants setting up their stalls and servants running early errands. Nothing seemed out of place.

Wang Ben walked beside his mother, one hand resting casually near his sword hilt. Wang Chen gurgled happily from Li Mei's arms, reaching for the colorful awnings that lined the street. Two Wang Clan guards followed at a respectful distance, both peak mid-stage qi condensation cultivators who had been with the family for years.

[OBSERVATION: Host spiritual sense detects no unusual signatures. Observation points consistent with previous monitoring patterns.]

The lack of anything unusual should have been reassuring. Instead, it made Wang Ben's skin prickle with unease. Xue Feng had been watching for weeks. He knew their patterns, their vulnerabilities. If he was going to strike, he would choose a morning exactly like this.

As they passed the row of medicine halls and alchemy shops, Wang Ben spotted Zhao Yu at the herb merchant's stall across the street, picking up a tonic order for his father. His friend caught his eye and nodded once before turning back to his purchase.

They reached Physician Luo's clinic without incident. The elderly physician welcomed them into his receiving room, fussing over Wang Chen with the practiced ease of someone who had treated three generations of cultivator children. Wang Ben stationed himself near the door while his mother explained her symptoms in low tones.

"The meridian blockage is more extensive than I'd hoped." Physician Luo's voice carried concern that he couldn't quite hide. "The treatment I have in mind will require several hours. Perhaps you should return this afternoon..."

"We'll wait," Wang Ben said. The thought of making this trip twice in one day, of creating another window of vulnerability, was unacceptable.

His mother gave him a look that mixed gratitude with worry. "Ben, you don't have to stay the entire time. The guards..."

"I'm staying," Wang Ben said.

Wang Ben's spiritual sense sharpened. A corrupt signature, closing fast. The same wrongness he had felt brush past him in the merchant district.

[ALERT: Possible corruption markers detected.]

Wang Ben's hand closed around his sword hilt. "Mother. Stay here. Don't leave this room for any reason."

"Ben?" Li Mei's voice came tight behind him. "What..."

He was already moving. Out the door, down the stairs. The two guards turned as he came.

"I sensed hostile cultivators coming this way. Hold this door. Protect my mother and brother until help arrives. I will go buy us time."

The senior guard's hand was on his sword. "Young master..."

Wang Ben met his eyes. "Hold the door."

The guards hesitated only a breath before obeying. Wang Ben stepped onto the street. The morning crowd had thinned noticeably, merchants retreating into their shops as if sensing the coming storm. He drew his sword as the first of the demonic cultivators rounded the corner.

There were three of them. Wang Ben recognized the one in the middle. The cultivator who had brushed past him in the merchant district, the corrupted qi no longer hidden. The other two he had not seen before. Corruption pulsed beneath all of their skin like living things, qi condensation enhanced beyond natural limits by the demonic arts they practiced.

The System blared warnings at the edge of his awareness. Threat levels, capability gaps, the math of one against three. He set them aside.

Wang Ben couldn't retreat. His mother and brother were trapped in the clinic behind him, and these cultivators had positioned themselves to cut off escape toward the compound. He was the only thing standing between them and his family.

"You finally crawled out of your shell, little turtle." The largest of the three spoke with a voice like grinding stone. "Xue Feng said you would."

"Where is he?" Wang Ben kept his stance loose, ready. "Xue Feng. Too afraid to face me directly?"

"Xue Feng has other preparations to make." The demonic cultivator smiled, revealing teeth that had begun to elongate into something inhuman. "We're just here to soften you up. Perhaps take a few... trophies."

His eyes flicked toward the clinic's upper floor, where Wang Ben knew his mother was watching through the window.

He drew a long breath, slow and deep. Fear was a small thing weighed against what stood behind him in that window. His heart settled like still water. His feet rooted into the street.

"Then let's begin."

The first cultivator lunged, faster than his apparent cultivation should have allowed. Wang Ben sidestepped, feeling the corrupt qi brush past him like diseased wind, and answered with a strike that opened the man's forearm to the bone.

It should have been crippling. Instead, the cultivator laughed, blood streaming down his arm as he pressed the attack with renewed fury.

The second cultivator circled around him while the first kept him occupied, forcing Wang Ben into a retreating spiral that gave ground step by step. His sword work was precise, economical, everything the System had helped him refine over months of training. But precision could not close the gap between his early-stage qi condensation and demon-refined flesh, and economy could not compensate for three-to-one odds.

A strike slipped through his guard, opening a shallow cut across his ribs. Another followed, barely deflected, the impact numbing his left arm. The third cultivator, the strongest, hadn't even joined the fight yet. He stood back, watching, waiting for Wang Ben to exhaust himself against his companions.

"Enough games." The third cultivator stepped forward, and Wang Ben felt the force of his cultivation like a wall pressing close. "Xue Feng wants you alive, but he didn't specify intact. Let's see how well you scream."

He moved, and Wang Ben barely had time to register the attack before it was upon him. Not a sword strike, but a palm technique, demonic qi concentrated into a killing blow that would shatter his defensive qi and rupture the organs beneath.

Wang Ben saw the palm coming and could not move. His footing was wrong. His sword was angled where the strike was not. The demonic cultivator's hand was already at his ribs.

Then a blade slammed into his wrist from the side, and the killing strike skidded past Wang Ben's chest by the width of two fingers. He felt the heat of corrupt qi pass over him. He felt the air close behind it.

Zhao Yu was beside him.

His friend had not arrived in a heroic charge. He had simply stepped into the space between Wang Ben and the strike at the precise moment it would otherwise have killed him, the way a man steps under a falling tile he had no reason to know was falling.

The demonic cultivator pulled back, snarling, his wrist hanging wrong. He did not press the engagement. His eyes flicked once to Zhao Yu, once to the clinic above, and he made his decision in that breath.

"Finish him."

He shouldered past Wang Ben without a second strike and broke for the clinic stairs.

The other two closed before Wang Ben could follow.

He tried anyway. The wounded one stepped into his path, blood still streaming from the forearm Wang Ben had opened earlier, grin wide. The second came at him from the left. He lost a heartbeat blocking, lost another, and by the time he could spare a glance the strongest of the three was already on the second floor.

A crash from above. Wood splintering. One of the guards' voices raised in a warning that did not finish.

The talisman, Wang Ben thought. Tear the seal. Do not wait. Do not ask.

He could not reach her. He could not even reach the stairs.

...

Inside the clinic, the door went down in a single blow.

Li Mei had moved before the wood finished falling. She was on her feet, Wang Chen tight against her shoulder, her back to the corner farthest from the doorway. The two clan guards were already between her and the demonic cultivator, swords up, faces set.

The demonic cultivator killed the first one in three strikes. The second held for five breaths. He had been with the family for nine years. He cost his attacker a slash across the ribs before he fell.

The demonic cultivator stepped over the bodies. The corrupted qi pouring off him filled the small room, thick and foul, pressing against Li Mei's chest until she could barely draw breath.

Li Mei pressed Wang Chen tighter to her shoulder. She drew the breath she could and held it.

Wang Chen had begun to cry. Li Mei did not look down at him. She did not look at the demonic cultivator either. Her hand was already inside her sleeve, closing on the talisman.

She tore the seal.

Golden light unfolded outward from her palm in a single soundless pulse and wrapped both her and Wang Chen in a luminous bell that rang once, low, like a struck temple bell. The note carried out the broken doorway and down the stairs and into the street below, then thinned to a low hum that sat just under hearing, the way a struck bell settles into its own quiet after the strike.

His first strike landed on the bell. It rang again. He drew back and struck harder. The bell rang. He hammered with both fists, corrupt qi flaring from his palms in waves that should have shattered foundation establishment defenses.

The bell did not flicker.

The talisman was Grade 7 work on a Grade 8 design. It would not stop a core formation cultivator. But a half-step foundation establishment cultivator, even demonically enhanced, did not stand a chance. All he could do was hammer the bell and hope it ran out of time before help arrived.

He stood there a moment longer, breathing hard, the corruption now visible in the whites of his eyes. Then he turned and went back to the stairs.

...

Across the city, in a private room above the Quiet Cup, three figures sat at a low table. Wuyan's attendant rose without sound, lifted the kettle, and refreshed his master's cup. Steam curled and vanished.

Wuyan held the cup between his palms but did not drink. His spiritual sense was elsewhere. "Do you know them?"

"No." The attendant set the kettle down. His own awareness had not left the merchant district either. "I cannot say I am familiar with any of the three. They are weaklings, all of them. No demonic sect spends effort on qi condensation cultivators. They are used by foundation establishment or core formation cultivators, as cannon fodder, menial labor, or worse. These three are expendable."

Wuyan turned the cup slowly between his palms. "Sect?"

"Looking at the demonic techniques they are using, I would guess Corpse Yin Sect ties." The attendant tilted his head a fraction. "I am not certain. That sect usually turns weaker cultivators into puppets or refined corpses."

Ruoxi's tea sat untouched in front of her. She had not moved since the fighting broke out. Her hands rested in her lap, unnaturally still.

"Brother." Her voice was level. The word landed like a held breath let go.

Wuyan did not look at her. "No."

"I do not think he will come out of this unscathed." Ruoxi's gaze stayed on the lattice, where her spiritual sense was watching what her eyes could not.

Wuyan finally looked at her. "And how, sister, would we ever know what the boy is made of if we kept stepping in front of him?"

"And if he dies?" The question was quieter than the rest. She had not turned her head.

"He will not die." Wuyan lifted the fresh cup.

Ruoxi did not answer. Her fingers tightened once in her lap, then loosened.

The attendant set his own cup down without a sound.

...

The bell rang twice on the street, low and clean, the way no sound in this fight should have rung.

Wang Ben's head came up.

Zhao Yu had already finished the wounded one. Wang Ben had not even seen the killing strike. He was on his knees, then on his face, and the demonic light went out of him in the same breath the bell rang. Zhao Yu's qi flared brighter as he turned for the second man. Wang Ben felt the edge of a breakthrough sitting inside his friend, close enough to touch. Life and death sharpened him the way no training ground ever had.

The second demonic cultivator was still standing, but he was already moving wrong, his guard a fraction late on every block. Zhao Yu was inside his rhythm. Wang Ben watched his friend's blade come up to a place where the throat was not yet, then watched him step into it of his own forward motion. Zhao Yu had not chased the throat. He had waited where it was about to be.

[OBSERVATION: Zhao Yu cultivation pressure rising. Mid-combat breakthroughs consistent with Battle Soul manifestation.]

His throat opened. He fell with the same surprise on his face as the first.

Above them, footsteps on the stairs. The strongest of them was coming back down.

He stopped halfway, his hand still on the rail, taking in the street. Two of his companions on the street. The bell still ringing faintly through the broken doorway above. A boy in plain clothes who should not have been able to do any of this.

Zhao Yu was already moving toward the stairs.

He came off the steps in a leap, qi blazing chaotically from his fists. The strike had failed. The other two were dead. He was fighting only to live long enough to make Xue Feng pay the price for it.

The demonic cultivator abandoned his technique. "Xue Feng!" his hoarse voice tore at his throat.

He never landed the strike.

Zhao Yu stepped out of its line a fraction of a heartbeat before it began. His counter caught him across the back, a shallow wound that drew a howl of frustrated rage.

Wang Ben pushed off the wall he had been holding and moved in beside Zhao Yu. His left arm was numb. His ribs were wet. He could still hold a sword. Together. They could finish this together.

His blade found the openings Zhao Yu created. He fought now without strategy, pure demonic strength against precision and pattern, and the math turned over inside three exchanges.

And then a new demonic pressure entered the street.

Xue Feng burst from a nearby alley. Hostile intent rolled off him in a wave that struck the street before he did. Wang Ben felt the weight of it land against his sternum like a flat hand. Black lines crawled beneath skin that had taken on an unhealthy pallor. None of this had been on him before the Xue Clan fell. Whatever he had encountered in the months since had turned him into a monster.

Xue Feng looked at the bodies on the street the way a man looks at tools he had not expected to need replaced. Then he spat onto them as he passed.

"Useless garbage. Three of you. And you could not even finish a pair of early-stage qi condensation cultivators before I had to come down here myself." His voice came rough at the edges, the corruption pulling at it.

The surviving demonic cultivator's lip curled back from teeth that no longer fit his mouth. The growl that came out of his ruined throat was not quite human. "You were supposed to come down before the other two were dead. That was not the plan."

"Then the plan changed." Xue Feng did not look at him. He had not stopped walking.

The demonic cultivator's eyes flicked once to the alley behind him, then to Zhao Yu, then back to the alley. He had decided. The corruption pulsed in his hand as he started to back away.

Zhao Yu was already on him. His expression had not changed since the bell rang. The strike came from his blind side and opened his shoulder, then his ribs, then the wrist that was already ruined. He staggered, swung blind, missed. Zhao Yu did not let him reset.

Xue Feng watched none of it. His attention was on Wang Ben. Something looked out from behind his eyes that knew Wang Ben by name.

"Wang Ben." Xue Feng's smile was a broken thing, full of hate and hunger and something that might once have been grief.

He turned his head toward the second-floor window of the clinic. The golden light was still visible there, clean and steady, bell-shaped around two figures.

Wang Ben's grip on the sword tightened. He did not speak.
