Chapter 18 - Chapter 18 : Fate

It was entirely dark inside the passageway, cold, chilly and damp. They had to touch everywhere to feel and find their way. It had been around a minute of crawling, Cevil remembered themselves turning right once, and they had been crawling in straight lines for the rest of the time. There was another turn ahead, and it seemed to lead to brightness. As Cevil turned, he saw a dim glow coming from the other end. Smoke was invading into the passageway, too. Cevil heard crackling sounds that seemed to be made by a bonfire. At the same time, Cevil felt the smoke reaching his nostrils and mouth. He coughed and choked the smoke into his lungs, the smoke reached his eyes, causing tears to generate and flood in his eyelids, disturbing his vision. KJ coughed too. For a moment, Cevil was afraid of getting out of the passageway. It might have been a trap; people could have been waiting outside for them. He caught hold of KJ's leg and pulled him back. KJ turned around and nodded his head at Cevil. He had understood Cevil at once, as if he had telepathy. Cevil doubted him, but as he watched the brightness gobbling up KJ, he scrambled after KJ, afraid of leaving KJ alone as well as getting left alone.

Cevil found himself in a plain cave as he crawled out. The rocks were solid shades of grey, affected by the brightness. The cave was curved like igloos. Armed men dressed in identical black-and-white suits were surrounding a campfire that was bright and warm. Each held a machine gun, pointing towards the passageway where Cevil came out from. They wore sunglasses in black too, covering their eyes. There were a few eco bags, one packed with food and beverages. Three new black hoverboards sat beside the eco bags quietly. A man in his early twenties – the obvious leader – was standing in the middle, in front of the passageway. Everything about him was black. Black combed over hair and sunglasses, black shirt beneath a black peacoat, black jeans and polished black shoes. Golden chains dangled from his neck. He blown a puff of smoke as soon as Cevil crawled out, simultaneously dropping his cigarette onto the floor, then crushed it with his shoes. Cevil found him handsome and, although the man wasn't smiling but felt friendly. Cevil can't help liking him. He had an intelligent face, and when Cevil appeared, a gentle smile spread across his face. He raised his left hand, gesturing the other men to lower their gun. They obeyed.

"Fate," He held out a hand. Cevil stared. He wasn't sure whether to reply. He was questioning everything that was happening. Firstly, he was suddenly kidnapped with KJ. Secondly, Ferando, a mafia boss, suddenly decided to help them. Thirdly, there were dozens of men waiting for them out here. Could everything be a trap?

"Kel." KJ shook his hands with Fate. "This is Cevil."

Cevil nodded at Fate and smiled awkwardly. The next second, he was watching the other men in dismay. Fate grinned, "Don't worry, we won't shoot. We're here to help you. Please have a seat." He gestured towards two wooden planks beside the campfire. Cevil and KJ had no choice but to obey, they both sat. Fate took a deep breath, "Before we start with anything, allow me to get our earpieces back, thank you," He let a hand out. Cevil was puzzled. He felt for his ears and realized there was an earpiece, so did KJ. So that was how he heard Ferando's voice! They pulled it out and handed it to Fate. "Thanks," Fate handed the earpieces to another man, and the man slipped the earpiece into his coat. "I bet you two haven't eaten for a couple of days," Fate said. One man brought the bag of food to them as soon as Fate spoke. "You may have some food. Eat, get some rest and we'll start our journey."

"Journey? Journey to where?" Cevil asked, curious. But before Fate replied, Cevil continued, "Also, who are you? Why did you kidnap us then help us?"

"There's some fruits and bread and buns, drink too." Fate ignored Cevil's question. Cevil scowled, but KJ smiled gratefully instead, "Thanks," he held a can of beer he found, then he drunk it. "No!" Cevil whispered, grabbing KJ's hand, pulling it back, at the same time spilling the beer. "I'm sorry, but you know, poison." Cevil waited for KJ to respond. "Don't worry, if I wanted to kill you, there's no need for me to use poison," Fate said.

The boys had a satisfying meal around the bonfire. Then, even though Cevil felt insecure, he slept on two pieces of big cloth provided for him and KJ.

It was the next morning when he was awakened by someone. He rubbed his eyes and looked, remembering where he was. Used bandages sat sulkily beside him. They were crumpled and stained with blood. Next to it was what seemed to be like his shirt, cut open and too, stained with blood. The next moment, he smelt a kind of awful smell. He couldn't describe it, but if he had to, it would be a mixture of spicy, bit of sour smell of wood. He lifted his neck, saw blurry visions of a man kneeling next to him, with something in his hand. "You've woken?" a gentle voice asked that Cevil recognized it instantly. Fate was the man kneeling by him, and Cevil realized that Fate was removing and wrapping new bandages around his wound on the stomach — which he has completely forgotten about. He helped himself with an elbow to sit up, finding KJ sitting beside him too, having a piece of bread. Fate was still in the same clothes as yesterday, but KJ had changed — Plain shirt with a coat and boots. Fate placed an eco-bag beside Cevil and said, "Get yourself changed, that shirt," he paused, "There's too much blood, and you don't expect going on a Six-hour journey when it's winter without a shirt, are you?" Cevil started, "Six hours? And it is winter?" he exclaimed. "Not exactly. Two more days to winter. And yes, one hour and a half on foot, five hours on vehicle," Fate replied calmly.
