Chapter 5: Eyes That Don't Look Away

Miran noticed him before she wanted to.

He was always there—standing by the printer, leaning against the glass wall, watching without staring. His presence felt heavy, like a question she didn't know how to answer.

She tried to focus on her work, but the silence around her desk had changed. It wasn't empty anymore. It was aware.

"You write a lot," he said suddenly.

She flinched, then looked up. "It helps me think."

He glanced at her notebook. "Or hide?"

The word landed too close to the truth.

"Maybe both," she admitted.

He studied her for a moment, as if deciding something. "People like you don't last here."

Her fingers tightened around the pen. "I don't need to be liked."

A pause.

"That's dangerous," he said quietly. "For everyone."

Before she could respond, someone called his name from across the room. He turned away without another word, leaving her with a strange feeling she couldn't place.

Later that evening, Miran stayed behind after everyone else had left. The city lights outside the window blinked like distant stars. She finally allowed herself to breathe.

She opened her notebook.

I am not invisible, she wrote. I am choosing when to be seen.

The door behind her creaked.

She turned.

It was him again.

"You should go home," he said. "This place changes people."

"So do quiet girls," she replied.

For the first time, he smiled—not warmly, but with curiosity.

"Maybe," he said. "We'll see."

As he walked away, Miran realized something frightened her more than failure.

Someone had finally noticed her.

And he wasn't looking away.
