Chapter 9 - chapter 6:cracks.beneath.the calm

The mistake was small.

That was what Miran told herself.

A misplaced file. A deadline misunderstood. Nothing she couldn't fix—until the room fell silent and her name was spoken out loud.

"Miran."

Every head turned.

Her heart dropped.

The supervisor stood near the front, holding the report in his hand. His expression wasn't angry, but disappointment cut deeper than anger ever could.

"This was due yesterday," he said. "And it affects the entire team."

Miran opened her mouth, then closed it again. The words tangled in her throat.

"I'm sorry," she said finally. "It won't happen again."

A few quiet sighs. Someone shook their head. Another person whispered something she pretended not to hear.

She sat down slowly, her face burning.

For the rest of the day, no one spoke to her the same way. Conversations stopped when she approached. Smiles faded. She felt the familiar pull of invisibility returning—stronger this time.

At lunch, she ate alone.

Again.

"You don't have to punish yourself," he said, sitting across from her without asking.

She looked up. "You shouldn't be here."

"Neither should you," he replied calmly.

She pushed her food away. "I messed up."

"Yes," he said. Then, softer, "But one mistake doesn't erase who you are."

She laughed quietly. "Here, it does."

He studied her for a moment. "Then maybe this place isn't as fair as it pretends to be."

Her eyes met his.

No one had ever said that out loud before.

Later that evening, Miran stayed late—determined to fix everything. The office emptied, the lights dimmed, but she didn't stop.

When she finally sent the corrected file, her hands were shaking.

Her phone buzzed.

Unknown: "I know today was hard."

Her breath caught.

Miran: "I wanted to disappear."

The reply came slower this time.

Unknown: "You don't get to disappear. Not anymore."

She leaned back in her chair, staring at the ceiling.

For the first time, she wondered if silence was really protecting her…

Or if it had been holding her back all along.
