Chapter 108 - Stone Finished, Blood Tested

The next fourteen days passed without ceremony, but not without strain.

From the first light of morning to the last glow of dusk, Ridgebrook worked. Shovels struck earth. Timber was dragged into place. Drainage channels were widened so rainwater flowed away instead of sinking into the ground. Paths were reshaped, no longer straight lines but curved routes that favored defenders who knew where to stand and when to stop.

Leonardo moved constantly. His hands were always dirty, charcoal smudged across his fingers and sleeves. He spoke little, preferring to point and show rather than explain. Weak sections were reinforced. Gaps were left where needed. By the third day, even unskilled workers understood what to do.

Soldiers rotated between guard duty and labor. No one complained. They were tired, but they could feel the change beneath their feet. The village felt firmer. Safer.

Noise drew attention.

On the fourth night, the forest stirred.

Lapu-Lapu sensed it before any horn sounded. He crouched near the treeline, fingers brushing the soil, listening to how leaves shifted where they should not. Two Rank 2 monsters circled the edge of the woods, curious rather than hungry.

He did not chase.

Instead, he signaled. Three quiet taps against stone.

Archers adjusted positions without a word. Shield Core units moved into narrow ground where roots broke stride and shadows swallowed movement. When the monsters stepped forward, arrows struck first, shields followed. One monster fell. The other fled, wounded and confused.

This pattern repeated.

Over the next ten nights, monsters came in ones and twos. Rank 1 beasts. Rank 2 predators. Once, a Rank 3 monster pushed close enough that its breath could be smelled before it was seen.

Each time, the response was calm.

No pursuit.

No panic.

Only ground chosen carefully.

Lapu-Lapu was always there.

He slept little. Ate when he could. His movements grew sharper with every night. During one long clash with a Rank 3 monster, he fought alone at the forest's edge. Mud sucked at his feet. Roots clawed at his ankles. His spear struck again and again until the beast finally withdrew.

When it was over, Lapu-Lapu stood still, chest rising and falling hard. Qi burned tight through his limbs. For a moment, he felt the line—the thin barrier holding him back from the next rank.

One more step, he thought.

But he stopped himself.

By dawn, Sun Tzu watched him quietly and spoke only once.

"Peak Rank 1," he said. "Hold it. Do not force it."

By the fourteenth day, Phase II was complete.

Trenches flowed into embankments. Drainage worked even after rain. Patrol paths connected naturally. Leonardo finally stopped and rested his hands on his knees, breathing out slowly.

"It will hold," he said.

That same afternoon, a merchant arrived from Rathmore.

He came carefully, escort light but alert. His eyes widened as he took in Ridgebrook's defenses. This was not the open settlement he remembered. This place watched back.

Negotiations were direct.

Sun Tzu handled them calmly. Gold was counted in the open. Timber, iron fittings, nails, spearheads, shields, and medical supplies were listed and weighed. No luxuries. No waste.

Six hundred and twenty gold changed hands.

Before leaving, the merchant shared news. The war in Rathmore had worsened. Cities burned. Villages vanished. Trade routes collapsed.

"More people will flee," he warned. "Refugees will come."

That evening, Liam called a meeting.

The hall was simple—wooden table, oil lamps, tired faces. Everyone who mattered was there.

"Phase II is done," Liam said. "But the war isn't slowing. Refugees are coming. We need a plan."

Sun Tzu spoke first. "We accept people in limits. Shelter in exchange for work. Order before growth."

Leonardo nodded. "Builders and craftsmen can push Phase III faster if trained."

Leonidas crossed his arms. "Anyone who stays trains. Even basic drills."

Khalid added, "Volunteers become militia. Discipline first."

Orin spoke next. "Food and water planning must come first."

Rasputin followed quietly. "And cleanliness. Disease kills faster than monsters."

Vlad smiled faintly. "Strength keeps fear away. But we rule with structure, not terror."

Lapu-Lapu's voice was low. "If they stay, they follow rules. No wandering. No fires near the forest."

Liam nodded. "Controlled intake. No exceptions."

Sun Tzu closed the discussion. "Then Ridgebrook does not just survive. It prepares."

Outside, the village settled into the night—stronger than before, and ready for what the world would send next.

After the meeting ended, Sun Tzu did not leave the hall.

He remained seated, fingers resting lightly on the table as others slowly returned. When everyone settled again, he spoke with calm certainty.

"Phase III must begin with purpose," he said. "Walls alone are not enough."

Leonardo straightened at once. "Permanent gates," he replied. "Not large ones. Narrow. Easy to defend. Stone footings with wood above, so repairs stay fast."

Leonidas nodded. "Kill zones before the gates. No straight approach. Anyone entering must slow down."

Khalid added, "And layered fallback points. If one line breaks, the next holds without panic."

Sun Tzu drew simple lines on the table with a piece of charcoal. "We build depth. Outer warning. Inner resistance. Final stand points. Every layer buys time."

Liam listened closely. "What about manpower?"

"Refugees," Sun Tzu said. "Sorted carefully. Builders to construction. Strong backs to hauling. Volunteers to training. No one idle."

Leonardo tapped the sketch. "We'll need stone. A lot of it. And lime. If trade holds, we can manage."

Orin spoke next. "Archery towers. Not tall. Just enough to see over earthworks."

Rasputin added quietly, "We also need proper infirmaries. Phase III must include sanitation and clean water points."

Vlad smiled faintly. "And places to hang enemies where all can see."

Sun Tzu did not argue. He simply said, "Fear is a tool. Use it carefully."

Lapu-Lapu leaned forward for the first time. "Do not cut the forest back. Shape it. Let it stay dangerous."

Sun Tzu nodded once. "Agreed."

Liam took a slow breath. "Then Phase III is not just walls. It's control."

"Yes," Sun Tzu replied. "Ridgebrook will not be a village anymore. It will be a position."

The decision settled heavily in the room. No one spoke for a moment.

Outside, the wind moved through the trees, and the village began to change its shape in people's minds.
