Dust rose along the old road just after midday.
Orin saw it first from the watch rise. At a distance, it looked like a broken line stretching across the land, uneven and slow. As it drew closer, shapes became clear—carts with cracked wheels, people walking barefoot, children clinging to adults who no longer had strength to spare.
Not monsters.
Not soldiers.
Refugees.
She lowered her bow slightly but did not relax. "Civilians," she said to the sentry beside her. "A lot of them."
The horn was not sounded. Instead, signals passed quietly through the village. Archers moved into visible positions without raising arrows. Shield Core units formed a loose line near the gate—not blocking the road, but guiding it.
When Liam arrived, the scale of it settled heavily in his chest.
The line of people stretched far past the bend in the road. Too many to count at a glance. Too many for a village that had only just stabilized.
As the refugees reached the gate, the number became clear.
Three hundred and sixty.
Some collapsed the moment they stopped walking. Others stood frozen, eyes darting, waiting to see if safety was real or just another lie. A woman fell to her knees and cried openly. No one tried to stop her.
Liam stepped forward. "You're safe," he said, loud enough to carry but calm. "But you will follow our rules."
Murmurs spread, fear and relief tangled together.
Sun Tzu moved beside him, his presence steady. "Order comes first," he said evenly. "Help follows order."
The intake began at once.
Rasputin and Lira took charge of the wounded. Rasputin's hands moved with practiced calm, his voice low and steady as he directed people to sit, lie down, or wait. Lira followed closely, offering water, cloth, and quiet reassurance. Some refugees cried when they realized no one was shouting at them.
Leonardo approached the able-bodied group differently. He watched hands, posture, how people stood when tired. "You," he said to one man, pointing at his palms. "Stone work?" The man nodded weakly. Leonardo gestured him aside. "You'll help build."
Leonidas and Khalid handled the volunteers.
Fifty stepped forward.
Not proudly. Not eagerly. Just because standing still felt worse than trying.
Leonidas tested them without cruelty. Simple commands. Basic endurance. Who listened. Who didn't. Khalid watched closely, filtering out those driven by panic rather than resolve.
"You fight to protect," Khalid said to one man who hesitated. "Or you don't fight at all."
By sunset, fifty were accepted as Rank 0 recruits. The rest were given other work.
Still, tension remained.
Near the grain store, an older villager confronted Orin. "We don't have food for this many."
Orin didn't argue. She nodded. "You're right," she said. "That's why we plan now."
That night, the council gathered.
Sun Tzu laid out numbers with no emotion. Food stores before. Food stores now. How long they would last if nothing changed.
"We have weeks," he said. "Not months."
Silence followed.
Leonardo broke it by kneeling and drawing in the dirt. He spoke simply. "We waste too much," he said. "Dry meat. Smoke it. Store it better. Cook together, not apart."
He showed racks. Pits. Storage zones. How monster meat could last weeks instead of days. How grain loss could be cut down.
Rasputin nodded. "Safe if watched."
Khalid added, "Hunting teams will cover the rest."
Lapu-Lapu's voice was low. "Quiet teams. Short paths. No greed."
Liam listened, then nodded once. "Do it."
By morning, the village moved again.
Drying racks rose near the walls. Smoke pits were dug downwind. Communal cooking replaced scattered fires. Refugees were given work instead of pity.
Food was still tight.
But it was no longer hopeless.
That evening, Lapu-Lapu stood at the forest's edge. He felt the ground—heavier now, louder with footsteps.
"More mouths," he murmured. "More eyes watching."
Behind him, Ridgebrook did not panic.
It adjusted.
Night settled over Ridgebrook with an unfamiliar weight.
Liam walked the inner paths, listening. The village sounded different now—more voices, more movement, more life pressed into tight spaces. Fires burned lower than usual. Meals were quieter. People ate with purpose instead of comfort.
He stopped near the drying racks. Leonardo was still there, adjusting spacing, watching the smoke drift.
"It will work," Leonardo said without turning. "Not perfectly. But enough."
Liam nodded. "Enough is all we need right now."
Nearby, Khalid supervised a small group returning from the forest. Two deer. One low-rank beast. Not much—but it was steady. He spoke to them calmly, correcting grips, reminding them not to rush.
"Speed feeds pride," he said. "Patience feeds people."
Leonidas watched from a distance. He didn't interfere. The recruits were not soldiers yet—but they were learning to stand, to listen, to move without fear.
Orin passed by with a bundle of arrows. She paused when she saw Liam. "No fights," she reported. "Some arguing. Nothing more."
"That's a win," Liam said.
At the medical tents, Rasputin worked late. Lira moved between patients, cleaning wounds, checking breathing. Exhaustion showed on her face, but she didn't stop.
"We can manage," Rasputin said quietly when Liam approached. "As long as hunger doesn't turn to sickness."
Sun Tzu joined them near the central fire. "Tonight was the test," he said. "They saw order instead of chaos. That matters."
"And tomorrow?" Liam asked.
Sun Tzu looked toward the forest. "Tomorrow, the world answers."
At the edge of the trees, Lapu-Lapu crouched, hand on the ground. The forest was restless. Not hostile—yet. But aware.
"Too many feet," he muttered. "Too fast."
He stood and turned back toward the village lights.
"If monsters come," he said to no one, "they won't find weakness."
Ridgebrook slept lightly that night.
Not afraid.
Just ready.
