Chapter 1 - A BOY WHO OUTRAN FATE

CHAPTER 1 — The Boy Who Outran Fate

Before someone dies… I hear it.

A voice.

A whisper that doesn't belong to this world.

"Your time is up."

The first time it happened, I thought it was nothing.

The second time… I started paying attention.

The third—

I stopped believing in coincidence.

Leon Ashcroft was the kind of student teachers whispered about.

Not because he caused trouble.

Not because he topped every exam.

But because of the way he saw things.

One glance at a puzzle—and it unraveled.

One look at a person—and he understood them.

People called him a genius.

Leon called it survival.

Because his life had never been easy.

Asthma gripped his lungs like invisible hands, sending him to the hospital every few years.

His inhaler was always in his pocket—

his "second pair of lungs."

School was his refuge.

Home was not.

His father was gone.

His mother was never there.

And Leon… learned to keep himself alive with instinct and a mind that never stopped moving.

Still, he smiled.

Still, he endured.

Because one day—

things had to change.

The Day Everything Ended

It should have been an ordinary evening.

Leon walked home from the library, headphones on, his favorite song playing.

Streetlights flickered overhead.

The road was empty.

He raised his inhaler—

pfft

A slow breath.

Relief.

Then—

Static.

The music distorted.

A voice slipped into the sound.

Cold. Quiet.

Unfamiliar.

"Your time is up."

Leon froze.

"…what?"

A second later—

Light exploded in front of him.

Headlights.

A truck speeding straight toward the intersection.

His brain moved faster than panic.

Left?

Right?

Angle of impact—fatal.

No time.

Move. Now.

But even perfect calculations couldn't defeat physics.

The brakes screamed.

The world tilted—

And then—

Nothing hit him.

The sky cracked.

A glowing tear split the air open, like reality itself had been wounded.

Wind roared.

Light swallowed him whole—

And everything disappeared.

The Next Breath

Leon's eyes snapped open.

The ground beneath him wasn't asphalt.

It was soaked in blood.

The sky burned red.

Screams tore through the air.

Steel clashed.

Explosions shook the earth.

Humans and demons collided in a battlefield that stretched beyond sight.

And Leon—

A boy with nothing but an inhaler and a fast mind—

had appeared in the worst place imaginable.

Between Heaven and Hell.

In the middle of war.

A blade sliced past his head.

He dropped. Rolled. Ran.

Not because he was strong—

But because he was terrified.

His chest tightened.

His lungs screamed.

Shaking, he pulled out his inhaler—

pfft

Air flooded back in.

Temporary.

Always temporary.

Then—

His headphones crackled.

The music restarted.

The same line echoed again.

"Your time is up."

Leon's body went cold.

No.

Not again.

Not here—

BOOOOM.

An explosion ripped through the battlefield.

The shockwave threw him behind a shattered slab of stone—his only cover.

Dust filled the air.

His heart pounded.

And for the first time—

Leon understood something was very, very wrong.

He looked down at the inhaler in his hand.

One full canister.

His lifeline.

In a world that wouldn't wait for him to breathe.
