The Observer did not land.
It hovered above the ridge like a figure made of glass and light, its body shifting slightly as if the air itself were studying Hiroto.
No weapon.
No attack.
Just attention.
Akari raised her spear anyway.
"Everyone hold formation!"
The soldiers formed a defensive line, though their hands trembled. They had fought Executioners and survived but this felt different.
This felt like being judged silently.
The Observer tilted its head.
Then a thin beam of light extended from its chest.
Not a weapon.
A scan.
The beam passed over the ravine, over the soldiers, over Akari Then stopped on Hiroto.
Yui stepped in front of him instinctively.
"…Don't look at him."
The beam adjusted.
It went through her.
Hiroto felt something crawl through his bones, like invisible fingers measuring every heartbeat.
His shadow flickered in response.
The Observer spoke for the first time.
"Subject confirmed."
"Shadow-Bearer located."
Akari shouted,
"Break the scan!"
Three archers fired enchanted arrows.
The arrows passed straight through the Observer's body.
It didn't react.
The Watcher cursed quietly.
"…It isn't fully here."
Hiroto stepped forward.
"…Projection."
The Observer turned its attention fully to him.
"Scar resonance increasing."
"Subject evolution: ongoing."
Hiroto met its gaze.
"So you came all this way just to stare?"
The Observer paused.
Then It looked past him.
Toward the soldiers.
One man stepped backward nervously.
Akari noticed instantly.
"Hold position!"
But the man's breathing grew faster.
"…I didn't think they'd come this fast…"
The words slipped out before he could stop them.
The ravine froze.
Akari's voice turned cold.
"…You."
The soldier fell to his knees.
"I—I had to! They promised they'd spare us if we marked the location!"
Yui stared in disbelief.
"You sold us out?"
The man pointed at Hiroto desperately.
"No! Him! They only want him! If we give him up, the rest of us live!"
The Observer's light pulsed slightly.
It had already learned what it needed.
Hiroto stepped forward slowly.
The soldiers moved away from him without thinking.
Fear.
Not hatred.
Just fear.
Hiroto stopped in front of the kneeling man.
"…You're scared."
The soldier nodded frantically.
"Yes! Anyone would be!"
Hiroto looked up at the Observer.
"So this is how you fight now."
The Observer replied calmly:
"Human pressure yields predictable outcomes."
Akari stepped beside Hiroto.
Her spear pointed at the traitor.
"We don't abandon our own."
The soldier screamed.
"You already lost! Look at the sky!"
More faint Observer shapes appeared above the clouds.
Watching.
Waiting.
Yui grabbed Hiroto's arm.
"…What do we do?"
Hiroto looked at the man kneeling before him.
Then at the sky.
Then at the army behind him.
He exhaled slowly.
"…We stop running."
The shadow at his feet spread outward across the ground.
The Observer tilted its head again.
For the first time—
It showed interest.
To be continued…
