Chapter 106 - War of Faith: Part 36

The ravine held its breath.

Hiroto stepped forward, shadow spreading across the ground like dark water. The soldiers instinctively moved back, forming a loose circle around him and the kneeling traitor.

Above them, the Observer remained silent.

Watching.

Recording.

Hiroto raised his head toward the sky.

"So you got what you wanted," he said.

"You found me."

The Observer responded calmly:

"Confirmation achieved."

"Subject exhibits continued defiance."

Akari's spear lowered slightly, but her eyes never left the traitor.

"…You lit the flare knowing what would happen."

The soldier trembled violently.

"I thought… I thought they'd take him and leave the rest of us alone!"

The Watcher spoke quietly from the shadows.

"…That's how Celestial Path works. They offer survival… at the cost of someone else."

The man's breathing broke.

"I just wanted to live!"

Hiroto looked down at him.

"…So does everyone here."

For a moment, the ravine was silent except for the wind.

Then Hiroto stepped past him.

"I'm not killing you."

Akari frowned.

"Hiroto…"

"If fear makes people betray each other," he said quietly, "then killing him only proves the sky right."

The Observer's light pulsed slightly.

"Unexpected response detected."

Hiroto turned to face it directly.

"You came here to measure me, right?"

The shadow beneath his feet sharpened into dark lines.

"Then watch closely."

He slammed his hand into the ground.

The scar pulsed.

Stone surged upward, forming jagged pillars that reached toward the sky. The shadow climbed them like veins, spreading across the ridge.

The Observer scanned again.

"Energy output increasing."

"Scar synchronization rising."

Akari stepped beside Hiroto again.

"…You're provoking them."

"Good," he replied.

High above the clouds, more Observer forms appeared.

They did not attack.

But their formation changed.

A ring.

Containment.

The Watcher's voice dropped.

"…They're building a cage."

Yui's stomach twisted.

"…For Hiroto?"

"No," the Watcher said quietly.

"For the land around him."

The air grew heavier.

Lines of faint light began descending from the clouds, linking together like a net across the sky.

Akari cursed.

"…They're sealing the valley."

The soldiers panicked.

"If that closes, we're trapped!"

Hiroto stared upward.

"…So that's the next move."

The Observer spoke again.

"Containment phase initiated."

"Subject will remain within observation boundary."

Yui grabbed Hiroto's sleeve.

"…We have to leave before it closes!"

Hiroto didn't move.

His shadow tightened around his feet.

"…No."

Akari looked at him sharply.

"What do you mean 'no'?"

He pointed toward the sky.

"Because if we run now… they'll build a bigger cage somewhere else."

The net of light spread wider.

Closer.

Closing the valley.

Hiroto clenched his fists.

"…So we break this one."

Above them, the Observers shifted again.

For the first time since arriving, They prepared for interference.

To be continued…
