I hate surprise inspections. Not because I dislike surprises. I simply dislike how quickly people become competent when they realise the person signing their paychecks has walked into the building.
A lazy employee suddenly remembers how to sit upright. A useless manager discovers leadership. Desks that probably spend half the week buried beneath coffee cups and unfinished paperwork become spotless within minutes.
Everyone starts moving, everyone starts smiling…everyone starts pretending.
Which is precisely why I tell no one when I visit any of the branches.
The elevator climbs quietly beneath my feet, and I glance at the numbers changing above the doors.
I haven't visited this particular branch in months. There hasn't been a reason to.
Aurelian handles most of the company now. Most of the shares belong to him, after all.
The remaining pieces are scattered between holdings, family interests, and things I haven't cared enough to involve myself with in years.
