Yu Zhen awoke to the sound of voices.
Not palace calls or bell chimes but laughter, footsteps, and lockers slamming shut. His eyes fluttered open to a ceiling covered in plain white panels glowing under fluorescent light.
A dormitory.
The smell of soap and paper replaced incense and stone.
He sat up slowly, silver hair falling loose against unfamiliar cotton sheets. His fingers curled into the bedding while his senses recalibrated.
Something was missing.
No double doors. No palace guards. No sound of armour.
Yet the pull in his chest remained.
The system activated quietly.
[WORLD 2 ONLINE][ENVIRONMENT: MODERN ERA UNIVERSITY CAMPUS][USER IDENTITY TRANSFER STUDENT MUSIC DEPARTMENT][SHAPED TRAIT RARE OMEGA STEALTH MODE ACTIVE][AFFINITY TARGET LIAN XUAN CONFIRMED ON CAMPUS]
Yu Zhen exhaled.
"Good… you followed."
That tug beneath his ribs strengthened the moment he left the dorm.
The campus was huge. Buildings of glass and concrete rose against the pale autumn sky. Students streamed past carrying backpacks and coffee cups, completely unaware of soul-threads or memory shards or bonded fate.
And yet.
Yu Zhen felt the pull clearly.
He followed it.
The music building stood near the river edge, its outer walls designed with polished windows that reflected both the campus and the sky. As he stepped through the revolving doors, the world seemed to sharpen.
A piano echoed faintly through the corridors.
He froze.
That sound.
Not just music. A call.
Yu Zhen followed the notes to an open rehearsal hall.
Inside, sunlight streamed across the polished floor where a black grand piano stood like a solitary altar.
Someone sat at it.
Long fingers moved with controlled intensity across ivory keys.
Black hair lay loose at the nape of the neck.
Broad shoulders relaxed in silent focus.
Yu Zhen exhaled softly.
Lian Xuan.
Here, he wore simple black clothes instead of armour. No insignia marked his rank. No sash indicated command.
But the posture remained unchanged.
So did the presence.
The Alpha stopped playing mid-phrase.
Golden eyes lifted instantly.
They locked onto Yu Zhen.
The air shifted.
Their bond recognised itself again.
[SYSTEM RESPONSE][SOUL THREAD RESONANCE CONFIRMED][MEMORY FRAGMENT 2 TWENTY PERCENT ACTIVE][AFFINITY LEVEL: THIRTY PERCENT]
Lian Xuan stood slowly.
Those eyes traced Yu Zhen like the world had narrowed back into something pointed and familiar.
"You came," he said quietly.
"Yes," Yu Zhen replied.
They closed the space between them instinctively.
No one else was present. The giant room held only echoes and sunlight.
Lian Xuan stopped less than a foot away, not touching but near enough that Yu Zhen could feel heat.
"I knew you would follow," Lian Xuan murmured.
Yu Zhen smiled faintly. "Actually, you followed me."
The Alpha's lips curved almost imperceptibly.
Their gazes remained locked.
"You look fragile in this world," Lian Xuan said.
"I feel less hunted."
"I won't let that change."
That promise struck deeper than Yu Zhen expected. He lifted a hand and brushed Lian Xuan's sleeve lightly. The surge that raced through both of them felt startling in its strength.
[SYSTEM ALERT][PHYSICAL CONTACT CONFIRMED][SOUL THREAD PULSE ACCELERATED]
Lian Xuan reached up slowly and cupped Yu Zhen's jaw, thumb resting near the corner of his mouth.
"Different setting," he murmured. "Same heartbeat."
Yu Zhen leaned into the touch unconsciously.
"I missed this," he admitted.
Lian Xuan's other hand settled at Yu Zhen's waist, firm and grounding.
"So did I."
They stood like that, quietly holding one another, in the middle of a sunlit music hall far removed from throne rooms and battlefield blood.
And yet.
The bond remained just as intense.
