The Moon Court did not sleep.
It stalked through endless corridors of marble and bone, whispered behind velvet drapes, and plotted beneath vaulted ceilings painted with bleeding constellations. Centuries of ambition had taught its noble vampires one truth.
Power was not inherited.
It was taken.
Yu Zhen's arrival placed a dangerous weight on the scales.
The Moon Priest's presence strengthened the reigning Lord far beyond what any of the covens could rival. To bind his blood to Lian Xuan was to tip the court permanently in the Lord's favour.
That could not be allowed.
Yu Zhen stood in the sanctum chamber overlooking the open courtyard far below. Wind stirred the hem of his robes. His silver hair slipped loose across his shoulders while moonlight carved pale lines along his jaw.
He sensed unrest everywhere.
Behind him, Lian Xuan leaned against a column, golden eyes scanning the vast court below like an apex predator marking territory.
"They are moving," Lian Xuan said quietly.
"Assassination or abduction," Yu Zhen replied with equal calm.
"Both," Lian Xuan murmured. "If they can't take your blood… they'll try to use you to control me."
Yu Zhen turned.
"You won't bend."
"No." A dangerous smile touched Lian Xuan's mouth. "They will."
The system chimed faintly.
[HOSTILE INTENT SPIKE][USER RISK INCREASING][MEMORY FRAGMENT 3 SENSORY TRIGGER ACTIVE]
Distant bells rang out a warning.
An attack had begun.
The first strike came not from the shadows, but from the ceremony itself.
During the evening convocation of the court, where robed nobles gathered in pretended unity around crystal braziers, a scent thick with intoxication bloomed through the hall.
Blood incense.
The lesser vampires froze.
Yu Zhen felt the pull immediately, the sudden draw of his Moon-Blood responding to the alchemical lure.
Lian Xuan moved instantly.
He caught Yu Zhen against his body before the priest could sway even an inch.
"Cover your nose," he ordered, wrapping one arm around Yu Zhen's chest protectively while sweeping his mantle around both their faces.
Too late.
A ritual blade flashed from within the smoke.
Yu Zhen gasped as a masked assassin lunged toward him mid-flight, fangs bared.
Lian Xuan's body became motion itself.
He twisted sideways, obscuring Yu Zhen completely while snatching the attacker by the throat and crushing the vampire's neck with violent precision.
The corpse slammed onto the stone floor, blood splattering the ceremonial glyphs.
Silence tore through the court.
Then chaos finally erupted.

Yu Zhen's vision fractured as adrenaline crashed through him.
The memory returns were sharper.
A castle ablaze under falling meteors.Lian Xuan was standing between him and oblivion with blood streaming down his face. The sound of a vow spoken into storm winds.
Yu Zhen swayed.
This time Lian Xuan didn't let him drop.
He lifted Yu Zhen into his arms effortlessly and carried him from the hall, crushing any approaching vampire aside with lethal swiftness.
They reached the Blood Sanctum again as siege alarms howled.
Yu Zhen clutched Lian Xuan's collar, breath shallow.
"Are you hurt?"
"Not yet."
Lian Xuan lowered Yu Zhen onto the ritual platform, immediately caging him between his arms like living shelter.
"Look at me," he murmured.
Yu Zhen did.
The golden fire burning there held steadiness no chaos could touch.
"You are here," Lian Xuan said firmly. "Not in memory. Not in death. Here."
Yu Zhen steadied himself.
"Yes," he whispered. "With you."
His hands pressed into the vampire's chest instinctively.
"I can feel your power humming through the blood oath."
"Good," Lian Xuan growled softly. "Then feel who protects you."
He leaned forward and kissed Yu Zhen deeply.
Not possessively.
Not desperately.
With grounding devotion.
Yu Zhen sank into it, heartbeat synchronising against the strange hollow echo where Lian Xuan's heart should be.
The kiss stole the frantic edge out of his breath.
When they parted, Lian Xuan kept their foreheads pressed together.
"They are escalating," Yu Zhen said.
"So will I."
The vow in his voice chilled even the stone around them.
The full rebellion came that night.
Seven covens rose in coordinated assault against the Moon Spire, launching blood magics from airborne platforms and summoning thralls into the palace corridors.
Through it all, Lian Xuan did not leave Yu Zhen's side.
He moved with lethal grace while refusing to release the moon priest's hand.
Together they fled into the underground catacombs where ancient wards still flickered alive.
A swarm of enemies followed.
Lian Xuan pivoted and placed Yu Zhen behind a curved stone pillar.
"Stay here," he commanded.
"I won't," Yu Zhen replied immediately.
"You have power but no combat training."
"I have you."
Golden fire blazed in Lian Xuan's eyes.
A blade tore through the shadows at them both.
Yu Zhen's system screeched.
[DANGER CRITICAL][PROTECTIVE OVERRIDE ACTIVE]
Before Lian Xuan could react fully, Yu Zhen stepped forward.
Moon sigils flared from his robes.
He raised both hands instinctively.
Light burst from his palms like crystallised moonfire, slamming into the attacking wave and obliterating them.
Yu Zhen screamed as the effort tore through him.
The palace seemed to shake.
The released power unlocked a sealed gate inside his soul.
[MEMORY FRAGMENT 3: EIGHTY-FIVE PERCENT UNLOCKED]
Yu Zhen collapsed.
Lian Xuan caught him instantly against his chest.
"No," he whispered fiercely. "Don't fall. Don't you dare."
Yu Zhen clutched his robes weakly.
"Xuan… I remembered."
"What?"
"I drowned in light… you carried me into the void… You screamed my name."
The vampire lord's eyes burnt.
He cradled Yu Zhen impossibly gently, like something delicate rather than dangerously powerful.
"And I found you again every time."
He pressed a kiss to Yu Zhen's brow.
"I will keep finding you."
The siege finally ended as dawn broke.
The rebel covens lay crushed.
Yu Zhen awoke in the spire chambers wrapped in Lian Xuan's cloak with the Vampire Lord sitting beside the bed.
Their fingers were intertwined.
Neither had let go.
