Chapter 6 - 1.5-Shadows Beneath the Court

Yu Zhen recovered slowly after the fever.Though his strength returned within days, the world around them had shifted.

The court no longer whispered. It watched.

Every corridor glance lingered too long.Every bow felt weighed with calculation instead of respect.Lian Xuan noticed immediately.

He placed guards outside Yu Zhen's chambers personally, loyal champions he trusted with absolute certainty. Still, he never let more than arm's distance remain when they walked together.

And even that distance vanished too often for formality.

They moved through the palace gardens one afternoon beneath falling plum blossoms. Yu Zhen strolled beside him at a gentler pace, his fingers brushing Lian Xuan's sleeve unconsciously every few steps. Lian Xuan made no effort to prevent it.

"People stare," Yu Zhen murmured.

"They can learn where to look and where to tremble," Lian Xuan answered.

Yu Zhen inhaled softly then glanced toward him. "You're tense today."

"Because danger is close."

Yu Zhen slowed."So… you feel it too."

Lian Xuan stopped walking entirely. He turned to face him and lifted Yu Zhen's hand gently.

They stood beneath pale blossoms while petals caught in silver hair and dark lashes alike.

"I always feel it," he said. "When you are near and when you are not. Danger follows you. And therefore it follows me."

Yu Zhen squeezed his fingers. "You never speak like that when you're holding a sword."

"Swords don't require honesty," he replied quietly. "You do."

The truth struck deeper than any battle cry.

They remained there wordlessly until Yu Zhen leaned closer and rested his forehead against Lian Xuan's collarbone. The Alpha's arms came around him instantly, familiar now, secure.

[SOUL THREAD STATUS STABLE][EMOTIONAL CONVERGENCE INCREASING]

Lian Xuan pressed a kiss to the crown of Yu Zhen's head, a quiet claim spoken through touch rather than words.

"I want to keep you this way," he murmured. "Small. Warm. Alive."

"I'm not small," Yu Zhen chuckled softly.

"In my arms you are," Lian Xuan answered.

They did not separate until the sound of shouting shattered the quiet garden.
