The fever came three nights later.
Yu Zhen woke drenched in heat, breath shallow, skin burning. The scent flooding the room told him the truth before the system chimed.
[OMEGA HEAT CYCLE INITIATED][PHEROMONAL SURGE LEVEL DANGEROUS][ALPHA SAFETY MATCH ONLY LIAN XUAN]
He bit back a gasp.
The heat was stronger than usual. Sharper. His instincts pulled violently toward the Alpha whose scent was etched into his soul. Every breath felt heavy, his body aching for closeness.
The door opened.
Lian Xuan entered already tense, eyes darkening as Yu Zhen's pheromones reached him.
He halted instantly.
"You didn't tell me," he said quietly.
"I thought it wouldn't be so intense," Yu Zhen whispered.
Lian Xuan closed the distance and knelt beside the bed, keeping his hands rigorously to himself.
"Can you endure it alone?"
Yu Zhen shook his head weakly. "I tried."
Silence stretched.
Lian Xuan clenched his fists. "I won't lose control with you."
"I don't ask you to."
He reached up weakly and grasped Lian Xuan's sleeve.
"I ask you to stay."
The Alpha inhaled sharply and nodded.
He removed his outer robes and slipped onto the bed beside Yu Zhen, keeping space between them at first.
But Yu Zhen moved instinctively closer, curling against Lian Xuan's side.
The Alpha froze for a heartbeat, then carefully wrapped his arm around Yu Zhen's back, pulling him flush to his chest.
"That is all I will do," he murmured. "Hold you."
"That is all I need," Yu Zhen whispered.
Their skin burnt where they touched, but the contact soothed more than intensified the ache. Lian Xuan's scent coated Yu Zhen's senses. His breathing steadied slowly.
Lian Xuan stroked Yu Zhen's hair with slow, repetitive motions.
"This is what protection is," he murmured. "Not taking. Not claiming more than you give. Just staying."
Yu Zhen pressed closer.
Beyond instinct, beyond biology, he felt safe.
They spent the long night like that. Yu Zhen's fever cresting and easing against the steady, solid anchor of Lian Xuan's presence. Gentle touches. Whispered reassurances. Occasional soft kisses to Yu Zhen's temple when the heat swelled too strong.
Nothing more.
Nothing needed.
When dawn touched the curtains, Yu Zhen finally slept.
Lian Xuan did not.
He watched Yu Zhen through the pale light, hand still resting lightly over his waist, jaw set with vow.
[HEAT CYCLE STABILIZED][OMEGA SAFETY CONDITION RESOLVED][SOUL THREAD STRENGTHENED][MEMORY FRAGMENT 1: FORTY-EIGHT PERCENT RESTORED]
He leaned forward and pressed a reverent kiss to Yu Zhen's silver hair.
"You don't belong to the throne," he whispered. "You belong with me."
Outside the palace, winter winds howled.
Inside, beneath silk coverings and guarded doors, an Alpha kept an Omega warm not by dominance, but devotion.
