Chapter 71 - Catching Sparks & Chasing Storms

Morning in Dawnview felt different.

Not calm.

Not peaceful.

Charged.

Even the fountain seemed to bubble with a faint static hum from the lingering energy of Azure Stormfront's first night.

Riley arrived at the meeting spot—Kipp & Mira's workshop courtyard—just as Lumi zipped out of his Soulspace with a decisive ping.

Aria pointed dramatically.

"HE WOKE UP SPARKLING. Today is going to be chaos."

Ether fluttered past her and gave her the softest warning tap on the forehead.

Aria sighed. "Fine. Mild chaos."

Dot perched on her head, legs splayed in judgmental approval.

Hayes and Hayley jogged in together, Bramble lumbering behind with what appeared to be a stolen cabbage in its mouth.

Sofia arrived next, Ether glowing like morning mist.

Jonathan followed carrying Stoneback Cub tucked under one arm like a confused granite toddler.

Rezion and Kalyani were last.

Rezion looked nervous.

Kalyani looked like she was vibrating.

Riley raised a brow. "You two alright?"

Kalyani pointed at Rezion.

"ASK HIM."

Rezion held up a small, chilly ball of light.

A tiny frost creature hovered above his palm—its wings delicate crystal shards, body a floating mote wrapped in slow-moving mist.

The Frostwing Wisp chimed softly as it dipped into Rezion's hand like a shy snowflake greeting its partner.

Riley smiled. "You bonded it?"

Rezion nodded quickly, cheeks red.

"It, uh… followed me home."

"It followed you everywhere," Kalyani corrected. "It nearly froze my soup."

Everyone cooed over the tiny creature.

Then—

"WAIT—THEY DIDN'T SEE MINE YET!"

Kalyani burst forward and slammed down her catch of the morning:

A Fire Gecko.

Except this one was bright ember-red, with glowing orange patterns across its back and a tail that smoked lightly, like a matchstick still cooling.

It chirped, sneezed a spark—

—and accidentally shot a tiny fireball at Aria's leg.

Aria shrieked.

"I AM BEING ATTACKED BY A LIZARD!"

Ether bonked her.

The Gecko chirped again, delighted.

Hayley gasped. "He's adorable."

Kalyani scooped the Gecko up proudly.

"It only took me SIX HOURS yesterday and THREE CHASES THIS MORNING."

Rezion muttered, "Three? I counted seven."

Everyone circled up.

Riley pulled up the group-map.

"The Stormfront hit phase two at sunrise. That means:

• Rare bosses have started spawning.

• Chests are higher tier.

• Spirit EXP is boosted.

• The dungeon unlocks in two days."

Aria leaned in. "So what's the plan, Commander?"

"Simple," Riley said, tapping the map.

Group Assignments

Hayes & Hayley → Southern Wilds terrain sweep

"Storm Boars. They drop armor plates we can use."

Sofia & Aria → Verdant Overhang recovery routes

"Ether's cleanse works on corrupted vines. Stick together."

Rezion & Kalyani → High Ridge

"Wisp clusters, fire pockets, and maybe another elemental variant."

Kalyani pumped a fist.

"GECKO ARMY LET'S GO—"

The Fire Gecko sneezed again and set her sleeve on fire.

She patted it out without stopping her hype.

Jonathan → Eastern cliffs with Tiger & Stoneback

"The stone tunnels respawn every Stormfront. Good place to train Stoneback."

Jonathan nodded confidently.

"I'll take both. Tiger tanks small hits and Stoneback can block anything with a pulse."

Riley → Central Wilds with Lumi & Arcial

"I'll scout the rare boss spawns."

Aria crossed her arms.

"Translation: Riley wants to solo a miniboss again."

Riley deadpanned. "Yes."

The moment the assignments were set—

Lumi exploded into brilliance.

Bright. Loud. Confident.

He zipped around the air like a hyperactive navigation marker.

Then snapped to Riley's face:

PING!

Riley blinked.

"…He's found something."

Aria grabbed everyone.

"TREASURE! LET'S GO!"

Ether tapped her in warning.

"TREASURE please let's go," Aria corrected.

Treasure Node number 1 — The Cliffside Cache

The group jogged down the forest trail as Lumi led them to a cliff overlooking the southern river.

A faint storm swirl hovered above a crevice.

Hayley peered down.

"There's a chest wedged in there!"

Hayes sighed and handed Bramble a rope.

"Again."

Bramble held the rope in its mouth like a dog holding a newspaper as Hayes rappelled down the cliff.

Five seconds passed.

Ten seconds.

Hayes called up:

"I can see the lock—it's storm-coded. Riley!"

Riley climbed down lightly, Dawnstring humming.

One shot—

A soft glow—

The lock clicked open.

Hayes hauled the chest up.

> LOOT:

6 Stormforged Metal

4 Wind-Touched Leather

Recipe: Aetherweave Mantle (Rare)

Bonus: 3 Lightning Spirit Treat

Arcial's ears perked HIGH at the word "treat."

Everybody stared at him.

Riley sighed.

"…fine. One."

Arcial purred like a thundercloud in love.

Rezion's First Frost Skill… Accidentally

As they moved deeper into the Wilds, the Frostwing Wisp darted forward, leaving a trail of cold light.

Rezion blinked.

"Um… is it supposed to do that?"

The trail solidified—

Into a thin frost-line—

Just in time to freeze the ground beneath a charging Storm Boar.

The boar slipped.

Kalyani burst out laughing.

"REZION! YOU JUST CAST A TRIPWIRE!"

Rezion stared at the wisp.

"I—I didn't do anything!"

Lumi pinged once, as if laughing.

Arcial made a smug lynx sound.

The boar hit a tree.

Hayley added it to their bag.

The Fire Gecko chirped, scampered up a tree, and—

FWOMP

Spit a little fire arc that curved around and hit a Storm Sprite square in the face.

Kalyani shrieked.

"YES—YES—HE HAS A FIRE LASER—"

Riley corrected, "It's a Spark Spit—"

"FIRE LASER," Kalyani repeated.

By midday:

• Rezion + Frostwing Wisp hit Level 11

• Kalyani hit Level 10 (Gecko nearly set fire to the map)

• Jonathan's Stoneback Cub unlocked "Mini Guard Wall"

• Hayes & Hayley brought back two Storm Boars

• Sofia mastered Ether's triple-thread healing

• Aria learned nothing except how to annoy Ether more efficiently

Ether bonked her.

Aria groaned. "I DESERVED THAT ONE, I KNOW."

Dot clattered approvingly.

As the sun dipped, Lumi froze.

Not glowing excitedly.

Not pinging.

He froze like prey spotting a predator.

Riley reacted instantly.

"Everyone behind me."

Arcial stepped forward, fur rising.

Ether dimmed her glow nervously.

A shadow moved between the trees.

Tall. Heavy. Covered in dark-blue lightning.

A system message flickered above it:

> RARE BOSS — STORMBACK JAGGERNAUT (Lv 15)

Roaming Stormfront Alpha-Beast

Aggression HIGH

Drops: Rare Storm Essences, Unique Materials, ???

Aria whispered:

"…that's big."

Hayley whispered:

"…that's angry."

Rezion whispered:

"…that's higher level than we are."

Jonathan swallowed.

"Riley?"

Riley pulled Dawnstring from his back.

The bow flared—light and storm intertwining beautifully.

"Simple," he said.

"Don't get hit."

The monster roared—
