Roots shifted beneath their feet, slithering like snakes.
From the far wall, the boss tore itself free.
Stone cracked. Bark split. A mountain of woven roots and pulsing green veins unfolded, hunched and massive, its shoulders crowned with jagged branches dripping glowing spores. At its center yawned a vast hollow chest, burning with sickly green light—like a furnace grown from moss and rot.
Jagged text burned into the air above it.
VERDANT HIVE-HEART — BOSS (HARD)
HP: 50,000
No one moved.
"…Okay," Aria whispered. "That's… that's big."
Hayes lifted his shield. "Positions."
Hayley swallowed hard. "We've got this. We have to."
Riley's heart pounded, but his hands were steady as he raised Shimmerstring. Lumi hovered at his shoulder, glow sharp and focused. Luna pressed against his neck, claws clutching his collar.
Behind them, the three new players shifted uneasily.
Kalyani's fire cat paced, tail blazing.
Jonathan's tiger cub growled low.
Rezion's ice husky watched in silence, cold mist curling from its jaws.
"Remember," Riley said quietly. "Small hits. Constant pressure. Don't get greedy. Healers, watch the bleeds. Rezion, Kalyani—your elements matter most. Fire and frost."
Kalyani nodded, pale but determined. "Got it."
Rezion rolled his shoulders. "Just tell me where."
The Hive-Heart leaned forward.
The glow in its chest flared—and it roared.
The sound tore through the chamber like a forest being ripped apart.
The fight began.
Roots exploded from the ground in a wide ring.
"SPREAD!" Hayes shouted.
They scattered as thorned vines slammed down where they'd stood moments before. Mirage Draughts shimmered around those who'd drunk them—Hayes, Hayley, Kalyani, Rezion—each movement just a little faster than it should've been.
"Front line with me!" Hayes called.
Terror stomped forward, stone skin thickening. Bramble charged beside him with a fierce squeak, green energy swirling around his paws.
"BRAMBLE—LET'S GO!" Hayley shouted, shield raised.
"DOT, WEB IT!" Aria yelled.
Dot spat a web across the Hive-Heart's lower trunk.
It smoked. The vines flexed lazily.
"…Wow," Aria breathed. "Okay. Status update: poison spider is deeply offended and completely useless."
"Plant-type boss," Riley said tightly. "Verdant element. High resistance to poison and control."
Dot clicked angrily.
"Later," Aria muttered. "We'll find you something squishier."
The Hive-Heart's arm—an entire bundle of roots—swung down.
"BLOCK!" Hayes roared.
Shields slammed together. Terror and Bramble braced, bodies colliding with the blow. Damage numbers flickered—but the line held.
"Good," Riley breathed. "Keep it anchored."
"ON IT!" Kalyani shouted.
Her fire cat lunged. Flames coiled around its paws.
"EMBER STRIKE!"
Fire tore across bark—and stuck.
The damage number exploded upward.
"IT'S WEAK TO FIRE!" Aria yelled. "KALYANI, YOU'RE PERMANENTLY EMPLOYED!"
Jonathan reacted instantly. "Fang!"
The tiger cub leapt in beside the fire cat, claws carving through scorched vines. Steady damage. Relentless.
Rezion exhaled, frost gathering.
"Auriel—CHILL RUSH!"
The ice husky howled, frost racing over burning bark. The flames locked beneath ice.
Riley's eyes sharpened. "Perfect. Fire, then ice. Stagger the regen—keep chaining it."
The Hive-Heart stomped.
The floor erupted into needles of green.
"WATCH THE DOTS!" Riley shouted. "MOVE—DON'T TANK IT!"
Red numbers began ticking under their bars.
"Bleeds," Sofia hissed. "Stacking fast."
"Echo—Healing Pulse!"
Echo darted through the group, light washing over them. Some bleeds faded. Others slowed.
"Spacing!" Hayes barked.
"I HEAR YOU," Sofia snapped, hands glowing. "VINE GUARD!"
Les planted himself, thorns flaring, redirecting part of the spike field away from the backline.
It helped.
Barely.
"LUMI—FLASH!"
Light detonated. The Hive-Heart recoiled for half a second.
STAR TRACE READY.
Riley loosed the arrow.
Radiant energy slammed into the hollow chest. The HP bar dropped hard.
"There," Riley said. "Chest cavity. That's the weak spot."
Aria grinned. "Dot—VENOM BITE. Emotional support mode!"
The Hive-Heart bellowed.
Vines erupted from its shoulders, sweeping wide.
"DOWN!" Hayes shouted.
Mirage-boosted players rolled clear. Others barely scraped past.
Tommy wasn't fast enough.
His HP plunged.
"Tommy!" Hayley cried.
"I've got him—" Sofia said, light flaring.
Green orbs bloomed above the boss's crown.
Riley's stomach clenched. "SPORES—DON'T BREATHE—"
They burst.
Status icons stacked.
Kalyani doubled over, coughing. "Ugh—"
"KALYANI, BACK!" Hayes snapped.
Cold wind from Rezion's husky pushed some spores aside. Not all.
Sofia's mana dropped faster now. Her hands shook.
"I'm fine," she muttered. "Just—don't do anything stupid."
Aria let out a breathy laugh. "Define—"
"ARIA."
"…Right."
They found a rhythm.
Front line held.
Spirits darted, struck, retreated.
Fire and frost hammered the weak point.
50,000 → 44,000 → 40,000
Not fast enough.
"It enrages at half," Riley said. "Rez—be ready."
The Hive-Heart lurched.
Darkness swallowed the room.
No UI. No light.
Then glowing circles crawled beneath their feet.
"SPREAD—DON'T STACK—"
The circles detonated.
Again.
And again.
Chip damage flooded the field.
"Echo—Pulse—again!" Sofia cried.
Mana plunged.
The Hive-Heart's chest flared brighter.
Riley felt it before the text appeared.
ROOT CATACLYSM — CHARGING
"EVERYONE BEHIND ME!" Hayes roared.
They scrambled.
Shields planted. Spirits pulled back.
"Hold," Riley whispered.
The world exploded.
Vines like spears tore upward.
Hayes' shield shattered.
Terror took the next hit—and shattered with it.
"TERROR!"
Bramble leapt in front of Hayley.
His HP vanished.
"BRAMBLE!"
Les moved without thinking.
Gone.
Moggy shoved the fire cat aside.
Gone.
Fang took the hit meant for Auriel.
Gone.
The final vine struck Echo.
She moved toward Sofia.
Always toward Sofia.
Light scattered.
Silence.
HP: 25,000
VERDANT HIVE-HEART — ENRAGED
Aria's voice shook. "We… we lost half the team…"
"They'll respawn," Hayes said hoarsely.
Sofia stared at empty space.
Riley swallowed.
"Spirits come back," he said. "We don't stop."
He set Luna beside Sofia. "Protect her."
He raised his bow.
"We finish this."
The Hive-Heart roared.
Spores fell.
And Riley drew back a radiant arrow as the second phase began.
