Chapter 50 - Verdant Core

The second chamber of the Verdant Burrow felt nothing like the cramped, suffocating first one.

Gone were the claw-scraping tunnels, the spore-choked vents, the constant chip-damage that made the Mirage Draughts essential. Here, the air opened wide—cool, damp, and heavy with the scent of earth. Thick roots arched overhead like the ribs of a massive beast. Mushrooms pulsed with faint bioluminescence, casting drifting shadows across the mossy floor.

And in the dead center sat the mini-boss corpse, a hulking vine-covered beast dissolving into motes of green light.

A moment later—

CHIME.

A reward chest materialized, wood carved with twisting leaf patterns.

Aria threw both fists up.

"LOOT TIME! BABY DRAGON, GET READY TO EAT RARE TREASURE!"

Luna, perched carefully on Riley's shoulder, chirped innocently—having no idea what "loot" meant.

Rezion, Kalyani, and Jonathan huddled together nervously, still buzzing from their level-ups. All three glowed with faint energy from having just hit Level 7.

Hayes wiped sweat off his forehead.

"That was harder than expected."

Hayley nodded, Bramble curled around her ankles.

"But… we did it. And nobody died."

Sofia exhaled in relief.

"Good job, everyone."

Everyone had leveled.

Just like Riley predicted.

Moggy, Tommy, Terror, Bramble, Echo, Les, Dot, and the Moss Ball — all had gained experience, some reaching 7 most reaching 9

Riley stepped forward, hands steady.

"Alright… let's see what we got."

He touched the chest.

It opened in a burst of soft green light.

A list appeared:

MINI-BOSS REWARDS — FIRST CLEAR BONUS

Essence Crystal - Verdant

Vineguard Bracers

Rootmissile Charm Common

Silver Coins times 16

Healing Seeds times 3

Minor Revive Petal times 1

Aria immediately grabbed the bracers.

"DIBS! I CALLED IT! I CALLED IT IN MY SOUL!"

Hayes raised an eyebrow.

"You didn't call anything."

"I psychically did," Aria said confidently. "Before I was even born."

Riley picked up the Essence Crystal, the surface glowing with a gentle green pulse.

His breath caught.

This…

This was big.

The Verdant Essence Crystal.

The reward ONLY first clear teams got—something that in his previous life, he had been too weak to claim.

Sofia leaned in. "Riley… who should use it?"

Hayley gently nudged Bramble forward.

"He would do so well with Verdant affinity… but Les would too…"

Jonathan stepped back quietly.

"You guys keep it. You earned this."

Riley shook his head.

"No. We're a team now. And this will help us win."

Aria pointed dramatically at Bramble.

"Bear. Beefy boy. Green power. It's destiny."

Hayley beamed.

Bramble puffed out his tiny chest with pride, ready to ascend to godhood.

"Alright," Riley said softly. "Let's give it to Bramble."

The moment the crystal touched Bramble's fur—

FWOOOSH.

Green light burst outward.

Vines spiraled in a protective ring around the baby bear.

Leaves fluttered.

The air shimmered.

Bramble roared—a cute roar, but a roar nonetheless.

VERDANT AFFINITY ACQUIRED.

Hayley nearly fainted from excitement.

"My baby is evolving into a TREE SHREDDER!"

Aria pumped a fist.

"THIS TEAM IS TOO POWERFUL. SOMEONE STOP US!"

Dot clicked in smug agreement.

They took a moment to drink water, bandage scratches, check their gear.

The oppressive chip-damage was gone now.

The air felt… normal.

Hayes tested the atmosphere with a cautious sweep of his hand.

"No spores. No passive damage. We won't need potions as urgently here."

Riley nodded.

"Good… because we're running low."

He removed four Mirage Draughts from his belt pouch.

"One each for Hayley, Hayes, Rezion, and Kalyani."

Jonathan blinked.

"Huh? Why not me?"

"Your tiger cub's wildstrike is going to be important, not dodging. These four need the evasion boost for the boss mechanics."

Aria leaned in close to Jonathan.

"It means you're meant to HIT things. Hard."

Jonathan's face lit up.

"Oh! That makes sense!"

Rezion accepted his potion with quiet gratitude.

"…Thank you. We'll do our best."

Kalyani bowed.

"We won't let you down."

Riley smiled.

"I already know you won't."

The three kids straightened, shoulders squared with pride.

They were ready.

"Okay," Riley said, stepping toward the next stone archway. "The final room is just ahead. From here on out… stay focused."

Lumi hopped to his shoulder, glowing with confident fire.

Luna tucked under his arm, warbling a determined little chirp.

Sofia squeezed her staff tight.

Hayley held Bramble like a fuzzy grenade.

Hayes raised his shield, jaw tight.

Aria cracked her knuckles, Dot ready like a tiny assassin.

They approached the tunnel.

Green light pulsed along the walls like a heartbeat.

Riley swallowed.

He remembered this fight.

Every mechanic.

Every weakness.

Every scream.

This boss wasn't complicated.

It was simply brutal.

And without Frost + Fire synergy?

Impossible.

Good thing they had both.

The tunnel widened into a vast chamber—circular, with columns of hollow roots spiraling toward the ceiling.

Thick vines blanketed the floor.

Pools of glowing sap dotted the arena like molten emeralds.

And in the center…

A massive cocoon hung suspended in the air, woven from roots, moss, and glowing green sinew.

It pulsed once.

Twice.

BOOM.

It cracked open.

A towering beast unfolded—

A Verdant Stag-Warden, antlers dripping glowing sap like poison, moss fur bristling with tiny spore pods. Its hooves slammed the ground, shaking the entire room.

Rezion took one step back.

"…Oh. Wow. That's… big."

Kalyani trembled.

"I-I didn't know dungeon bosses were this… alive."

Jonathan whispered, "It looks like it eats children."

Aria cracked her neck.

"Well good news—we have like six children to feed it."

Sofia: "ARIA!"

Dot clicked frantically, ready to fight anything three times her size.

Hayes's shield shone faintly with reflected green light.

"Riley… call the strategy."

Riley took a breath.

"Rezion—your Ice Husky slows its sap burst. Kalyani—your Fire Cat melts the spore pods before they explode. Jonathan—Tiger Cub focuses on the tendons on its legs."

He pointed at the boss.

"We take this thing apart one mechanic at a time. Follow my lead. No panic."

Lumi glowed.

Luna shimmered.

His bow pulsed.

Everyone nodded.

Riley lifted Shimmerstring—

"ARIA—start the recording."

Aria cackled.

"TODAY, WE BECOME LEGENDS!"

Dot hit the record button.

The Verdant Warden roared.

The boss fight began.
