The Verdant Guardian roared.
The entire chamber shook as its massive form shifted—four vine-covered legs digging into the earth, bark splitting, green sap hissing like steam. The boss's AOE pulse had faded… but the devastation it left behind still hovered like a haunting echo.
Where eight spirits had stood, only light motes floated.
No bodies.
Just drifting, fading stars.
Terror.
Bramble.
Les.
Moggy.
Mossball.
Echo.
Tiger.
Dot.
All gone in a single devastating sweep.
Sofia fell to her knees, staring at the last fading glimmer where Les had stood.
Hayley clutched her empty arms where Bramble had been only seconds ago.
Hayes' jaw tightened, Terror's absence like a weight crushing his chest.
Rezion stared at the vanished husky light motes with trembling disbelief.
Jonathan looked frozen, Tiger's disappearance ripping a hole through his confidence.
Aria… Aria stood absolutely still.
Dot was gone. Mossball gone.
Her eyes were wide, breath shallow.
It wasn't just a loss.
It felt like betrayal.
Like the dungeon had taken something personal.
Riley clenched Shimmerstring so hard his knuckles paled.
"Stay with me!" he shouted over the rising growl of the boss. "They'll come back at the Healing Center! This isn't permanent!"
But the pain was there.
Real.
Heavy.
Only five spirits remained:
Lumi
Luna
Fire Cat
Ice Husky
Tom
They formed a ragged line in front of the trembling players.
The Verdant Guardian shuddered.
Its bark split fully open—light gushing from the cracks.
Rezion gasped. "It's… changing forms!"
Riley felt the shift too—the surge of wild magic.
He steadied his stance.
"LISTEN UP!" he shouted. "We're doing well! That AOE was meant to team-wipe us. The worst is done. This next form—"
The Guardian's legs snapped thin, its bulky frame stretched upward, vines retracting into a sharp, deadly silhouette.
Its defenses peeled away like shedding armor—
but its claws gleamed with lethal intensity.
"—its DEFENSE is weak," Riley yelled. "But its ATTACK hits HARDER. MUCH harder."
Hayes slammed his shield down.
"THEN WE HOLD THE LINE!"
Hayley clasped her staff, eyes blazing.
"I'll keep Sofia safe—just keep it away from us!"
Sofia wiped her tears, nodding fiercely.
Aria cracked her knuckles, fury burning.
"That thing took Dot. I'm going to bury it."
The Guardian lunged.
Its new form was terrifying—fast, razor-sharp, leaving gouges in the ground with each strike.
The Ice Husky struck first.
It howled, unleashing Frostbite Surge, ice crawling up the Guardian's legs, slowing its movement.
Kalyani's Fire Cat followed, pouncing on its back, flames spiraling over its weakened bark—
Fire met Ice, superheating and supercooling the boss's armor until it cracked violently.
"YES!" Riley shouted. "That's its weakness! KEEP IT UP!"
Hayes blocked a vicious strike, shield ringing.
Hayley slammed a healing burst into him.
Aria darted under its swiping arm, her gauntlets flaring with shock.
"YOU LIKE HITTING PEOPLE? TRY HITTING ME, YOU OVERGROWN HOUSEPLANT!"
Riley drew Shimmerstring—
Lumi flashed—
Star Trace triggered—
FWSSSSS-CRACK!
The radiant blast carved through the Guardian's weakened bark, detonating sparks across its torso.
The boss shrieked, stumbling.
"PRESS IT!" Riley yelled. "WE'VE GOT IT ON THE BACK FOOT!"
The Guardian roared again—
Then vanished.
Sofia gasped. "It's going under the vines—!"
Riley's heart dropped.
"NOBODY MOVE!"
A tremor.
Vines recoiled like serpents.
Then—
The Guardian burst from the ground, directly toward Sofia.
"NO!" Riley sprinted.
Hayes wasn't fast enough.
Hayley wasn't close enough.
But Luna—
Luna was.
The tiny dragon leaped in front of Sofia—horn glowing bright—
Faelight Barrier.
A shimmering dome formed—
The Guardian's claws slammed into it—
CRACK.
The barrier shattered like glass.
Luna was thrown back.
"No—NO—LUNA!" Riley screamed.
The Guardian lunged again, claws plunging downward—
Lumi threw himself in the way—blinding flash—
But the boss anticipated it.
It swept its arm sideways—
And Tom leapt in, saving Kalyani from a fatal strike.
The blow tore through him.
Tom dissolved into light.
Kalyani screamed.
Before Riley could register it—
The Guardian's third strike descended upon Luna.
The tiny dragon looked at Riley— Softly.
Bravely.
Knowing.
Then—
The strike hit.
Luna exploded into radiant motes.
Riley's world froze.
Sofia screamed.
Hayley covered her mouth.
Aria trembled.
Rezion collapsed.
Jonathan's legs buckled.
Riley didn't breathe.
He didn't blink.
He didn't think.
Shimmerstring lit like a star.
Lumi burned bright white.
And Riley snarled through his teeth—
"Finish it."
The Ice Husky and Fire Cat unleashed everything—
An inferno of flame and a storm of frost.
Aria's Shockwire wrapped the Guardian's limbs, stunning it repeatedly.
Hayes charged—slamming his shield into the weakened bark again and again.
Hayley bathed the party in constant healing, tears streaming.
Sofia, shaking, raised her staff.
"Luna… thank you…"
Holy light flared—Radiant Mend + Light Lance, piercing through the boss's core.
Riley drew back his bow—
Lumi flashed—
Star Trace x 3 triggered from chain-support—
And Riley fired a triple volley of radiant death straight into the heart of the Guardian.
The boss screeched—
cracked—
collapsed—
And burst into a geyser of glowing leaves.
Silence.
Then the system roared:
DUNGEON CLEARED — VERDANT DEPTHS (HARD)
First Completion Bonus Awarded
Everyone collapsed where they stood—panting, shaking, bruised, exhausted.
Hayley sobbed into Hayes' shoulder.
Kalyani sank to her knees.
Jonathan held his face, trembling.
Rezion clutched the husky, sobbing in relief.
Aria leaned against Sofia, both shaking.
Lumi dimmed, curling into Riley's hood—
mourning.
Riley dropped to his knees, shaking violently.
"Luna…"
His voice cracked.
But he managed a broken smile.
"She'll come back… she'll come back…"
Sofia hugged him tightly.
"We'll get her back… all of them…"
They sat together for several long moments.
Then the system flashed again:
REWARDS OBTAINED
Riley stared at the loot through blurry eyes.
They did it.
They actually did it. They were battered, bruised, emotional, exhausted. But they did it. And the rewards will be spectacular.
The lights of the Healing Center shimmered beyond the exit portal.
Riley stood slowly.
"Let's go get them back," he whispered.
The team stepped toward the portal, battered but victorious—
heartbroken, but stronger than ever.
And somewhere in the Healing Light…
Luna waited.
