The corridor spiraled downward into soft green light, the air thickening with the scent of moss and old wood. The Dungeon's first chamber finally widened into a vast hollow beneath the earth—roots twisting across the ceiling like a woven cage, glowing fungi clinging to them like lanterns.
A low mist rolled across the floor.
The temperature dropped.
Everyone felt it.
Aria shivered dramatically.
"Okay, this place has 'boss fight' written all over it. And possibly 'free trauma.'"
Dot clicked in agreement, perched on her shoulder like a vibrating goblin.
Riley tightened his grip on Shimmerstring.
"Stay sharp. The mini-boss is here."
His knowledge—so painfully clear from his previous life—told him exactly what waited in the mist.
A stalker.
A hunter.
Silent. Fast. Deadly.
Hayes moved forward with his shield raised, steady as a wall.
Hayley adjusted her stance, Bear Cub Bramble huffing beside her.
Sofia swallowed nervously, Echo and Les flanking her ankles.
Aria cracked her knuckles, Mossball rolling circles around her feet.
Behind them, the new trio—Kalyani, Rezion, and Jonathan—stood ready but visibly anxious.
Their spirits—Fire Cat Emberflare, Ice Pup Frostbite, and Tiger Cub Stripes—kept low, hackles raised.
Riley scanned the area.
The mist stirred.
"…There."
A shape moved.
Fast.
Crawling across the wall on long vine-woven limbs.
Sofia gasped.
"Oh no…"
The monster uncurled itself—a mass of thorns and brambles shaped vaguely like a wolf, blind eyes glowing faintly beneath a crown of twisting vines.
VERDANT STALKER — LV 8 (Mini-Boss)
HP: High
Speed: High
Damage: Small, rapid hits
Effect: Scratch + Bleed stacking
Riley stepped forward.
"Remember—constant chip damage. Don't get swarmed. Let the tanks take its attention."
Hayes slammed his shield down.
"ON ME!"
The Stalker hissed and leapt, slashing with thorned claws—
CLANG!
Hayes blocked, but the creature's claws rattled against his shield in a rapid series of slicing blows.
Hayley stepped in beside him.
"Bramble! Guard!"
The Bear Cub roared—small but mighty—and slammed into the Stalker's hind leg, drawing its attention.
Aria flung out a hand.
"Mossball—GO!"
The Mossball bounced once… twice… then launched itself into the Stalker like a living cannonball.
BONK.
The Stalker hissed, momentarily stunned.
Dot clicked triumphantly.
Sofia raised her rod.
"Echo—Quick Attack!"
Echo blurred forward—
strike, strike, strike—
darting back before the Stalker could retaliate.
Les fired a barrage of glowing leaves.
None hit.
He looked incredibly proud anyway.
Jonathan yelled, voice cracking,
"STRIPES—BITE!"
The Tiger Cub darted in and tore a chunk of vines free.
Kalyani pointed dramatically.
"EMBERFLARE! FLAME TAIL!"
Her Fire Cat slammed a burning tail strike across the Stalker's flank, scorching dried vines.
Rezion stepped forward—quiet but focused.
"Frostbite. Chill Breath."
A wave of icy mist rolled over the Stalker, slowing its joints.
Hayes grinned.
"They're coordinated. Good."
Riley lifted his bow.
"Lumi—Flash!"
Lumi rose beside him, bursting in a brilliant pulse of light—
FLASH!
The Stalker shrieked, stumbling back blindly.
STAR TRACE ACTIVATED
Riley drew—
fired—
FWSSSSH—
The radiant arrow struck dead center, carving a line of starlight through the Stalker's tangled chest. Vines snapped and curled from the heat.
The creature staggered, enraged now.
It turned—
And charged Luna.
Riley's heart dropped.
"No—Luna, back!"
But Luna stood her ground.
The tiny dragon inhaled—
MOONLIT HORN!
She dashed forward in a clumsy but brave lunge, horn glowing. Her hit knocked the Stalker's jaw upward just enough for Emberflare and Frostbite to slam simultaneous fire and ice strikes into its exposed chest.
Aria screamed,
"THE BABY LANDED A COMBO HIT—WE ARE WITNESSING HISTORY."
Then the Stalker's health bar hit the halfway threshold.
The ground trembled.
Vines erupted upward like spears.
Hayley cursed under her breath.
"Enrage phase!"
Riley shouted,
"Everyone spread—MOVE!"
Roots cracked the floor.
A vine shot straight toward Sofia—
Echo jumped in front of her, deflecting it with a brave tackle.
Hayes slammed his shield down, blocking three spears at once.
"Focus fire! Don't get cornered!"
The new trio looked overwhelmed for a moment, eyes wide as the dungeon suddenly revealed its true nature.
Kalyani's voice shook,
"R-Rezion—freeze the ground!"
"Got it!" Rezion replied, firing another Chill Breath.
Riley saw it—the window.
"Aria! Punch the frozen vines!"
"WITH PLEASURE!"
She jumped, smashing the brittle vines with electrified fists. Mossball launched itself again, cracking another vine pillar in half.
Hayes yelled over the chaos,
"We need one final burst—Riley!"
"I'm on it!"
He lifted Shimmerstring.
Lumi flashed one more time—
STAR TRACE
Luna stood beside him—
breathing, shaking, but glowing with determination.
"Together," Riley whispered.
He fired.
And Luna released her own burst of light.
PRISM KICK and STARSHOT IMPACT
The combined blast struck the Stalker's core—
BOOOOOOM—
Vines exploded outward in a shower of glowing petals.
The chamber went still.
The mist evaporated.
The Stalker collapsed into motes of light, dissolving into the earth.
Silence.
Then—
DING—DING—DING—DING—
System messages flooded their interfaces:
Everyone receives a level up. Level 9 all around except the new trio
The new trio's screens lit up brightly:
Kalyani — Level 7
Rezion — Level 7
Jonathan — Level 7
Their spirits glowed with new power.
Kalyani squealed.
"EMBERFLARE LEARNED FIRE BURST! OH MY GOD—"
Rezion stared at Frostbite in awe.
"He… he learned Ice Fang…"
Jonathan buried his face in his tiger cub.
"STRIPES GOT SAVAGE CLAW—WE'RE ACTUALLY DOING THIS!"
Hayes clapped Jonathan's shoulder.
"You three earned it. Well done."
Sofia smiled warmly.
"You worked really hard. That wasn't luck."
Hayley hugged all three at once.
"We're proud of you!"
Aria wiped a fake tear.
"THE BABIES ARE GROWING UP."
Dot clicked solemnly.
Riley exhaled, tension unwinding from his shoulders.
"We did it. First hurdle down."
But inside?
He was relieved.
If they had failed here…
They would have never survived the final boss.
He checked the team's potion count again.
4 Mirage Draughts left.
Not enough for everyone
And worse—
the potion timers were ticking.
They had a limited window before evasion started dropping.
Hayes noticed Riley staring at the countdown.
"Time's short, right?"
"Yeah," Riley admitted. "But we're almost through the dangerous part. Keep your heads clear."
Hayes nodded firmly.
"We'll trust your lead."
Riley turned toward the deeper tunnel.
Glowing vines parted like a curtain.
A new dungeon door pulsed ahead—
the entrance to the true first boss.
Aria cracked her knuckles.
"Ready for Phase Two?"
Riley lifted Shimmerstring, Luna and Lumi glowing at his side.
"…Let's finish what we started."
They stepped through the doorway—
And the chamber beyond lit up in eerie emerald light.
