The Flame Hall felt different the next morning, heavier, as if the air itself sensed something closing in. Even before Aria opened her eyes, she felt tension rippling through the bond—Kael's heartbeat was faster than usual, tight and strained. When she sat up, she found him already armored, flames low around his shoulders as he spoke to two commanders near the entrance. The moment he saw her awake, his expression softened, but the fear behind his eyes didn't fade. Aria tried to stand but Kael reached her before her feet touched the ground. "Careful," he murmured, guiding her to sit back down. "You didn't sleep deeply." Aria smiled weakly. "Neither did you." His jaw flexed. "Scouts came back early. The Black Concord advanced again. Faster than expected." Aria stiffened. "How close?" "Close enough." His answer was vague on purpose; she didn't push. Before she could ask more, the Flame Master approached them with her ash-braided crown and sharp gaze. "She's ready," the Master announced. "Trial One for Stage Two begins now." Aria felt the bottom of her stomach drop. Kael bristled. "She woke up minutes ago—" "And she's stable," the Master countered. "If she doesn't learn control today, the Sovereign will use every crack she leaves open." That silenced Kael. Aria touched his arm gently. "It's okay. I need this." He looked like he hated every part of this but finally nodded. The Master led Aria to the center of the hall where ancient runes glowed beneath her feet. A low hum filled the chamber, responding to her presence. Apprentices gathered in the shadows, whispering. No human had ever stood where she stood. "Begin," the Master instructed. Aria closed her eyes. Her mark warmed. Kael held his breath somewhere behind her. She reached inward—slow, careful, the way she had practiced. The power inside her stirred like a sleeping beast unsure whether she was friend or prey. "Good," the Master said. "Now pull it back. Don't suppress—guide." Aria tried. Pain shot through her chest. The runes flickered. She inhaled and tried again. More pain. Sweat broke across her brow. Kael took a step forward, fire flaring around him. "Aria—" "Stay back," the Master snapped. "She must do this alone." Aria grit her teeth and reached for the mark again—softly this time. Not as force. As persuasion. The power shifted, softening, flowing like warm currents instead of biting like thorns. For a moment—just a moment—it obeyed. The runes brightened. The Hall quieted. The Queen, who had entered unnoticed, raised a brow in approval. Kael exhaled in relief. Aria opened her eyes and smiled faintly. "I think I—" Then everything went cold. Not outside. Inside. A voice slid through her skull like a hand through water. "Well done… Little Bride." Aria's blood froze. "No…" Her heart rate spiked—the runes glitched—the flames in the hall crackled violently. Kael moved instantly. "ARIA!" She staggered backward, gripping her head. The Master's eyes widened. "How is he reaching her HERE?" Aria gasped, voice cracking. "He's… inside… the mark—" The Sovereign's whisper wrapped around her like silk dipped in ice. "You called me yesterday. I only answer." Aria screamed. Light burst from her mark—blinding, raw, uncontrolled. Runes shattered. Apprentices fell to their knees. The ground cracked beneath her feet. Kael lunged, catching her just before she collapsed completely. "Aria! Look at me—stay with me—" She couldn't. Her vision blurred. The last thing she heard inside her mind was the Sovereign's voice, thick with satisfaction. "Your evolution begins with me." Her body went limp. Kael's roar shook the hall. Flames erupted around him—violent, black-edged. "GET AWAY FROM HER!" The Queen rushed forward, touching the mark with trembling fingers. "Kael… she's in Stage Two. And he's inside it." Kael's entire world cracked. "What does that mean?" The Queen closed her eyes, voice heavy with dread. "The Sovereign is no longer just whispering from afar. He has found a path. Through her evolution. Through her light." Ezren entered the hall at that exact moment, breathless. "What happened—?!" Kael lifted Aria in his arms, hands shaking. "He touched her mind." Ezren swore loudly. "Bro that's—THAT'S REALLY BAD—" Kael didn't hear him. He held Aria like she was fading from the world. "Aria… stay with me…" Her eyelids fluttered faintly, but she didn't wake. The Queen finally spoke the words Kael feared most. "If he connects to her during every evolution phase…" She looked at Kael with grave eyes. "He will claim her from the inside." Kael felt everything inside him break. "Over. My. Dead. Body." He held Aria closer, flames swirling like a shield around them both. But deep in her faint consciousness, Aria felt the Sovereign's cold smile. And she knew— Stage Two had only just begun.
